In short
- The answer: 40 English-taught economics programmes for 2027/28 sit in our catalogue, at 26 Italian public universities. 29 are two-year master's and 11 are three-year bachelor's, with Bologna (6) and Turin (4) offering the most.
- Rankings: the University of Bologna is the top public university in Italy for Economics and Econometrics, at 78 (tied) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, ahead of Sapienza at 139 (tied). This guide leaves out private universities.
- Fees: an economics degree at a public university can be tuition-free for eligible students who win a DSU grant. For 2026/27 the University of Milan charged families living in India €402 a year for Economics: Behavior, Data and Policy, about ₹43,900 at the ECB rate of 25 September 2026 (€1 = ₹109.2605).
- Background: master's calls count your economics, statistics and maths credits. Trento's Behavioural and Applied Economics, for instance, asked for 48 credits across those areas and business in 2026/27.
- ApplyAZ, an independent study-in-Italy consultancy with offices in Milan and India, works only with Italian public universities and takes no commission from them. For eligible students, we handle the applications, Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU scholarship application and the visa file.
The first step is an eligibility check. When you are eligible, a one-to-one consultation with one of our Italy experts follows, and then we take care of everything.

Which English-taught economics programmes can you study in Italy?
Forty programmes in our catalogue, counted on 28 September 2026: 29 master's and 11 bachelor's at 26 public universities. Universitaly lists each as taught only in English. The condition is that you start in autumn 2027, because every one of them has a single intake at the start of the academic year.
Our inclusion rule: a programme is here when it is English-only in our catalogue and its title names economics, the economy or economic analysis. Titles that also name finance or business are listed in those guides as well. Data science degrees that apply methods to economics, such as Milan's Data Science for Economics and Health, sit in our data science guide.
Science degrees that only mention the circular economy or the bioeconomy are left out. So are 8 economics degrees in our catalogue with more than one teaching language, including Sapienza's and Roma Tre's Economics.

Which Italian public universities are best for economics?
Bologna, then Sapienza. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for Economics and Econometrics, Bologna is 78 (tied) and Sapienza 139 (tied) among 19 ranked Italian public institutions. The condition is that the ranking alone should not pick your programme, because 5 of those institutions run no English-only economics degree in our catalogue.
| University | QS by Subject 2026, Economics and Econometrics | English-taught economics programmes in our catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| University of Bologna | 78 (tied) | 6. |
| Sapienza University of Rome | 139 (tied) | 2. |
| Polytechnic University of Milan | 151 (tied) | 0. |
| University of Padua | 197 (tied) | 2. |
| Ca’ Foscari University of Venice | 201 to 250 | 0. |
| University of Rome Tor Vergata | 201 to 250 | 2. |
| University of Milan | 251 to 300 | 1. |
| University of Turin | 251 to 300 | 4. |

| University of Pisa | 401 to 450 | 2. |
| University of Trento | 401 to 450 | 1. |
| University of Florence | 451 to 500 | 1. |
| University of Milan-Bicocca | 451 to 500 | 2. |
| University of Pavia | 451 to 500 | 1. |
| University of Calabria | 551 to 700 | 0. |
| University of Genoa | 551 to 700 | 1. |
Private universities that appear in this subject table are not listed here. The European University Institute in Florence, ranked 176, is an intergovernmental institute rather than an Italian state university, so it is left out too.
Several universities with English-taught economics degrees are not ranked in this subject: Polytechnic University of Marche, University of Brescia, University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, University of Ferrara, University of Insubria, University of Molise, University of Parma, University of Perugia, University of Tuscia, University of Udine, University of Urbino Carlo Bo, University of Verona. A missing rank says little about a single programme.
What background do you need for an economics master's in Italy?
A bachelor's in economics, business, statistics or a related field, with enough credits in each area. Trento's Behavioural and Applied Economics set the rule out clearly for 2026/27: at least 48 credits, including 16 in economics, 6 in business and 8 in statistics, maths or quantitative methods.
| Programme | Entry rule in the latest call | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Behavioural and Applied Economics, Trento | 48 credits: at least 16 in economics, 6 in business and administration, 8 in statistics, maths and quantitative methods. English at B2. 15 places for non-EU citizens living abroad in 2026/27; GMAT optional. | Trento, admission for non-Europeans. |
| Economics, Turin | A committee checks the minimum requirements; applicants who fall short sit an interview in English on economic reasoning. Applications run from February or March to September. | Turin, Economics. |
| Economics and Data Analysis for Industry and Policy, Pavia | Not restricted access; a test in economics and econometrics applies if merit criteria are not met (our catalogue). | Pavia, programme page. |
| Applied Economics, Padua | Open admission with requirements; selection on CV and grades, with GRE or GMAT encouraged (our catalogue). | Padua, Applied Economics. |
Engineering and science graduates can qualify when their transcripts carry enough economics. We map each of your courses to the credit areas in the call, so you know before applying whether a programme will count them.
Is the GRE needed for economics in Italy?
No: none of the 29 economics master's in our catalogue makes the GRE compulsory, though Padua's Applied Economics encourages it and Siena's Economics lists it as optional. Trento's admission page also treats GMAT or GRE scores as optional. If your grades are modest, a good score can strengthen the file.
For most applicants, the stronger lever is the credit profile. Trento's committee weighs your academic record with a statement of purpose, two reference letters and your CV, and treats test scores as optional.
Can you study economics in Italy after Class XII?
Yes. Our catalogue lists 11 English-taught economics bachelor's open after Class XII, since Class XII meets the 12 years of schooling the MUR circular requires for first-cycle access. Several limit places: Milan and Padua rank applicants on the CEnT-S, Milano-Bicocca on a CISIA test, and Bologna and Turin on the SAT.
Our guides to Class XII routes into Italian universities and the BBA in Italy explain which school boards and subjects each university accepts, and how the SAT and CEnT-S compare.
Not sure whether your marks and subjects fit these bachelor's or master's? Take the eligibility check, then talk it through in a one-to-one consultation with one of our Italy experts, and we handle the applications for you.
How much does an economics degree cost at an Italian public university?
Between €402 and €2,998 a year in 2026/27 at three leading universities, for a family whose income and assets are in India. Milan's fixed amount for its Area B economics bachelor's is the lowest; Padua's fixed fee for its economics school is the highest. Each figure comes from that university's own 2026/27 fee rules.
| University | Economics programmes in our catalogue | 2026/27 yearly fee, family abroad | In INR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milan | 1 | €402 (€146 first instalment plus €256 for an Area B course; India is in Group A) | about ₹43,900. |
| Bologna | 6 | €1,157.04 for a bachelor's or €1,357.04 for a master's (reduced fixed fee for non-OECD citizens) | about ₹1.26 lakh or about ₹1.48 lakh. |
| Padua | 2 | €2,998: €2,790 fixed fee (Group A, School of Economics and Political Science) plus €192 regional fee and €16 stamp duty | about ₹3.28 lakh. |
Fee sources: Milan's 2026/27 regulation on fees and contributions (Art. 6), Bologna's flat-tax page for non-OECD citizens and Padua's 2026/27 fee call (Tables 1 and 4). Rules for 2027/28 are pending and normally appear in the summer before the year.
How does the DSU scholarship work for economics students?
The region, not the university, awards it, on family income and assets. For 2026/27 the national ceilings were an ISEE of €28,339.88 and an ISPE of €61,608.48 (MUR decree 176 of 10 February 2026), and regions may set lower limits. First-year students need no credits to apply, but must earn them to keep the grant.
Turin's economics students apply to EDISU Piemonte, Milan's to the University of Milan and Bologna's to ER.GO. The DSU guide for 2026/27 compares every call. We prepare the application and the ISEE parificato for each region on your shortlist.
Do economics graduates in Italy find jobs?
Most do within a year. AlmaLaurea's 2026 report (survey year 2025) found 86.3% of economics-group master's graduates in work one year after graduating, earning €1,581 net a month on average. The condition: this group includes business and finance graduates, and the figure covers all Italian universities, not only English-taught programmes.
| Economics-group master's graduates, one year on | AlmaLaurea, survey 2025 (2024 graduates) |
|---|---|
| Graduates in the survey population | 17,249 (10,819 interviewed). |
| Employment rate | 86.3%. |
| Average months from graduation to first job | 3.0. |
| Average net monthly pay | €1,581 (about ₹1.73 lakh). |
| Working in the private sector | 88.6%. |
| Largest fields of work | Consulting 28.6%; credit and insurance 17.0%; industry 17.0%; commerce 9.4%; education and research 5.4%. |
| Five years on (2020 graduates) | 96.3% employed; €2,006 net a month (about ₹2.19 lakh). |

University pages point to the same mix. Trento names industrial organisation, labour economics, public policy evaluation and data analytics as fields its graduates work in. Padua trains applied economists for the digital economy, economic data analysis, environmental economics and green finance.
Pavia prepares its graduates for public institutions, private organisations and research centres. Tor Vergata aims its Economics master's at the private sector, public institutions and academia. After graduating, a permit to look for work lasts from 9 to 12 months, per the Ministry of Labour integration portal.
Which economics master's fits your plans?
Pick by the job you want. Our 29 master's split into five broad tracks: 4 combine economics with data or quantitative methods, 6 focus on sustainability or development and 9 teach general economics and policy. The rest cover health, public or international economics, as titled in our catalogue.
Heading for banking or markets? Our guide to finance degrees in Italy covers the finance master's. For company roles, the business and management guide and the masters in Italy hub go further.
When do 2027/28 economics applications open?
Some already have: the University of Padua takes 2027/28 applications from students with foreign qualifications between 15 September and 15 November 2026 for most programmes. Trento's 2026/27 non-EU round closed on 4 March 2026, and its 2027/28 dates are pending. Universitaly confirms that 2027/28 visa applications close on 31 October 2027.
Rolling windows differ: Turin's Economics takes applications from February or March to September. We keep the dates for every programme on your shortlist and file each application well before it closes.
Reality check
Decisions you cannot outsource. Universities admit, regions award DSU grants and consulates issue visas. Universitaly itself warns that validation of a pre-enrolment gives no certainty of a visa appointment or a visa.
Work we take on. For eligible students we shortlist English-taught economics programmes at public universities, check each credit rule against your transcript and file the applications. After that we file your Universitaly pre-enrolment, prepare your DSU scholarship claim and build the visa file, and one named person looks after each stage.
Common mistakes and their price.
- Too few statistics or maths credits: at Trento that means failing the 48-credit rule, and a lost intake.
- Missing an early round: Trento's 2026/27 round for non-EU applicants closed on 4 March 2026, so waiting for summer would have cost a year.
- Assuming the DSU limit is national: regions may set lower ISEE limits than the national ceiling, and a wrong guess costs the grant.
- Picking a programme listed with more than one teaching language, then finding core courses taught in Italian.
Take the eligibility check now. If you are eligible, you book a one-to-one consultation with one of our Italy experts, and from that point we take care of everything.
Frequently asked questions
Can an engineering graduate apply for an economics master's in Italy?
Yes, when the transcript carries enough economics and quantitative credits: Trento, for example, counted 48 credits in 2026/27, at least 16 of them in economics, so a BTech with only one economics course would fall short. Maths and statistics courses from an engineering degree can count towards the quantitative credits. We check your courses against each call before you apply.
Do economics master's in Italy teach data science?
Many do. Our catalogue lists economics programmes that pair the subject with data at Genoa, Verona, Pavia and Perugia, and Tor Vergata's Economics has a Data Science and Econometrics track. If you want a data science degree first and economics second, our data science guide lists those programmes separately.
Which Italian university has the most English-taught economics programmes?
The University of Bologna, with six in our catalogue across three campuses: Economics and Finance and Economics, Politics and Social Sciences in Bologna, two programmes in Forlì and two in Rimini. Turin follows with four, all taught in Turin. Counted by city, Rome also has four, split between Sapienza and Tor Vergata.
How long do economics graduates in Italy take to find a first job?
About three months on average. AlmaLaurea's survey year 2025 shows economics-group master's graduates who were working one year on had found their first job 3.0 months after graduating. The figure covers graduates of every Italian university, so treat it as a national benchmark, not a promise for any single programme.
Do I need maths in Class XII for an economics bachelor's in Italy?
It helps a great deal. Milan ranks applicants on the CEnT-S, a CISIA test in English, using its mathematics and reasoning sections, and Turin ranks on the SAT, which also tests maths. If you dropped maths after Class X, we check which of these bachelor's still fit your profile.
Is an Italian economics master's a two-year degree?
Yes. Every economics master's in this guide is a laurea magistrale: two years and 120 ECTS, usually in class LM-56. It is the second-cycle degree of the Italian system and qualifies for regional DSU calls, which one-year masters universitari do not.
How is ApplyAZ paid if universities pay nothing?
Students and their families pay us, never universities, public or private. After the eligibility check, which costs nothing, and a consultation, fees come step by step as results arrive: a starting fee, then admission, DSU and visa fees. Our How ApplyAZ Gets Paid page lists each step and its refund terms.
