Roma Tre University is a public university in Rome, Lazio, founded in 1992 and one of the city's three large state universities. In July 2025 it had 37,051 enrolled students, 13 departments plus one school, and 114 degree programmes: 33 bachelor's, 54 master's and single-cycle degrees, and 27 PhDs. Its main sites line Via Ostiense in the south of the city, with a further campus in Ostia. Four of its departments hold the Ministry's Department of Excellence status.
Roma Tre University teaches mostly in Italian, but it offers four master's degrees fully in English for 2026/27. They are Restoration (Architecture), Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and International Studies (Political Science). Roma Tre has no English-taught bachelor's degree, although many Italian-taught programmes include classes in English, international curricula and double or joint degrees with partner universities abroad.
Roma Tre University asks for 12 years of schooling for a bachelor's degree, or a relevant first-cycle degree for a master's, legalised and backed by a declaration of value or a CIMEA certificate. Its 2026/27 guide asks non-EU visa applicants to show Italian at B2 level, through a university test or an accepted certificate, with listed exemptions, so check how this applies to your English-taught master's. Each master's also checks its curricular requirements. Roma Tre publishes no acceptance rate.
You apply to Roma Tre University by registering on its GOMP student portal, uploading your documents, then submitting Universitaly pre-enrolment for your visa. For 2026/27 the Universitaly deadline was 15 September 2026, later than at many Italian universities, but a late application squeezes your visa appointment and housing search. Student Affairs checks your documents before approving the pre-enrolment, and your originals are checked again when you arrive.
Roma Tre University sets tuition by family income (ISEE), on top of a fixed €156: the €140 regional tax and €16 stamp duty. Under its 2025/26 fee rules, students with an ISEE up to €23,000 were fully exempt from tuition and those up to €30,000 got a partial exemption. Students with income abroad file an equivalent ISEE by 15 October, or within 60 days of enrolling. If you submit none, you pay the highest fee bracket. Fees are paid in up to four instalments.
You can study at Roma Tre University with little or no tuition only if your family income qualifies and you file on time. Tuition is set by family income (ISEE); students from lower-income families can pay little or nothing beyond the regional tax, and a DSU scholarship winner also gets a tuition waiver. In your control: getting an ISEE parificato from translated, legalised documents, filing it by the deadline, and your DiSCo Lazio application. Late ISEE filing costs €120 to €180 in penalties. The main scholarship for Roma Tre University students is the DiSCo Lazio right-to-study grant, which also handles student housing. For 2026/27 its ISEE limit is €28,339.88 and its ISPE limit €61,608.48, and the call closed at noon on 22 July 2026. The national minimum grant for 2026/27 is €7,171.11 a year for off-site students and €4,190.71 for commuters. Roma Tre asks DiSCo winners with income abroad to submit their ISEE through the same procedure as other students.
Roma Tre University is in the 851 to 900 band of the QS World University Rankings 2027 and the 801 to 1,000 band of THE 2026. It was in the ARWU 901 to 1,000 band in 2025 but does not appear in the 2026 list. In Censis 2026/27 it scored 80.0 among Italy's large public universities, in the lower part of that group. Rankings mostly measure research across a whole university, so for a small English-taught master's, the programme itself matters more.
Student life at Roma Tre University is centred on south Rome, where its main sites line Via Ostiense and are served by Metro B and regional trains, with a shuttle to the Ostia campus. Rome is one of Italy's more expensive cities: HousingAnywhere's September 2026 estimate puts a room at about €650 a month and a full student budget near €1,200, with a monthly transport pass around €35. DiSCo Lazio handles residence places for scholarship students, so apply early.
Roma Tre University is one of Rome's three large public universities, alongside Sapienza and Tor Vergata. In QS 2027 Sapienza is 111th and Tor Vergata joint 342nd, while Roma Tre is in the 851 to 900 band. Sapienza and Tor Vergata both offer many more English-taught programmes, including bachelor's degrees. Foro Italico specialises in sport sciences. Roma Tre's advantages are its younger profile, its south Rome location and a focused set of English-taught master's.
Roma Tre University is a good choice if one of its English-taught master's fits you, such as Biomedical Engineering, Restoration or International Studies, or if you speak Italian and want a large, younger Rome university. It suits you less if you need an English-taught bachelor's, as it has none, or a wide choice of English programmes. Its global rankings are modest, so judge the programme itself, and remember that Rome costs more than most Italian university cities.
