Economics and Management is a three-year, 180 ECTS bachelor's degree (classes L-18 and L-33) taught in English at the University of Siena. Entry needs a secondary school diploma that gives access to university and English at B2 with a recognised certificate; non-EU visa applicants are selected on transcript and CV, with no entrance test. With the DSU Toscana scholarship, it can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
Detailed entry requirements
Siena's Economics and Management bachelor asks for a secondary school diploma or recognised foreign equivalent and English at B2. Non-EU applicants who need a visa compete for 150 places on their school transcript and CV, with no entrance test, and must hold a recognised English certificate. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]
School-leaving requirement and places
You need a secondary school diploma, or a qualification obtained abroad that is recognised as suitable for admission to Italian universities. The 2025/26 call sets this rule, and the 2026/27 enrolment pages describe the same route for foreign secondary qualifications. [1][7]
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants who need a visa had a quota of 150 places. Selection rests only on the documents you submit, mainly your school transcript and CV, and offers go out in order of priority once your requirements are verified. EU applicants and non-EU applicants who do not need a visa have no enrolment cap. [1][2]
What this means for your school results
As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a completed Class 12 or Higher Secondary Certificate from CBSE, CISCE or a state board in India, an HSSC in Pakistan, an HSC in Bangladesh or GCE A levels in Sri Lanka, where it gives access to university in your country.
- Check carefully: results from open schooling (such as NIOS) or a smaller board, or a polytechnic diploma taken after Class 10 instead of Class 12.
- Often short: a Class 10 certificate alone, or any school qualification that does not give access to university in the country that issued it.
Because selection rests on your transcript and CV, your marks and your CV decide your place in the order of offers. The rules do not name a required school stream, but your maths is checked after enrolment, as explained below. [1][4]
English
English at CEFR level B2. Non-EU applicants who need a visa must hold a recognised English certificate unless they are exempt as native speakers, and medium-of-instruction statements are not accepted for this programme. [1][2]
The university's general English page lists the countries whose citizens are exempt, including the UK, the USA, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Malta, and points to a separate list of accepted certificates. It also allows a medium-of-instruction exemption for some applicants, but the programme's own 2026/27 page rules this out, so we follow the programme page. [5]
Selection and the maths check
For 2026/27, no CISIA CEnT-S or any other test was required for admission. [1]
After admission, your starting level is assessed with a TOLC-E, CEnT-S or English TOLC-E taken on or after 1 January 2025. Below the minimum score, you receive additional learning requirements (OFA) to clear in your first year, by reaching the score in a later TOLC-E or CEnT-S, or by passing the first assignment or the exam in Principles of Mathematics. If they are still open at the end of the first year, you cannot sit second-year exams. [4]
The rules changed recently: the 2025/26 call ranked visa applicants 60% on a TOLC-E, English TOLC-E or SAT score, 20% on CV and school record and 20% on a motivational letter. [7]
2026/27 deadlines
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants who needed a visa applied on apply.unisi.it from 18 March to 4 May 2026. [2] The university's admissions calendar lists 6 May 2026 as the closing date for this group, and its summer window, 7 May to 30 September 2026, was only for EU applicants and non-EU applicants who do not need a visa. [3]
The 2027/28 dates are not yet published. [2][3]
Documents and non-EU steps
The 2026/27 application rests on your school transcript and CV, with qualification documents in English or Italian, plus your English certificate. [1][2]
The 2025/26 call also asked for an ID or passport and a motivational letter, and required foreign diplomas and transcripts to be official, stamped and signed, with a certified translation if not in English or Italian. Before online enrolment, students with a foreign qualification needed clearance from the university's Admission Office, and enrolment stayed provisional until all documents were verified. [7]
Once admitted, visa applicants complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and apply for a type D study visa, following the deadlines the university sets each year. [7]

About the programme
Economics and Management is a three-year bachelor's degree at the University of Siena, run by the School of Economics and Management at Piazza San Francesco in the centre of Siena. It is an interclass degree covering classes L-18 (economics and business management) and L-33 (economics), worth 180 ECTS, and it is taught entirely in English. [1]
The degree builds a multidisciplinary base in management, banking and economics, so that graduates understand how consumers, firms and organisations work in a complex social and economic environment. It suits school leavers who want a broad business education before choosing a specialism.
What you will study
Students combine accounting and management with financial intermediation in banking, insurance and financial markets, alongside microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and economic history. Later in the degree you choose one of three curricula: [1]
- Banking and Finance: financial markets and institutions, risk management and fintech applications
- Business and Management: planning, management control, corporate reporting, digital management and corporate social responsibility
- Economics and Social Sciences: economic analysis, market phenomena, quantitative methods and their social implications
- Core subjects shared across curricula: accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics
How the programme is taught
The degree site lists mobility, internship and training opportunities for its students, and graduates can continue in Siena on the English-taught MSc degrees in Economics, Finance, and International Accounting and Management.
Career paths
The university expects graduates to gain core economic and financial skills, management capabilities and strong problem solving, so they can enter the international labour market. Typical first roles are junior positions in:
- private firms and organisations
- banks and other financial institutions
- consultancy and analysis roles that need a business and economics background
Fees and scholarships
Under the University of Siena fee regulation for 2026/27, foreign citizens without a valid Italian ISEE pay a contribution linked to their country's GDP per capita compared with Italy's. The regulation does not accept an ISEE parificato. We confirm the exact amount for your country. [6]
DSU Toscana scholarship winners and eligible students are exempt from university contributions, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students. [6]
How to apply from outside the EU
Non-EU applicants who need a study visa compete for 150 places and are selected only on their documents, mainly the school transcript and CV, with no entrance test. [1] We apply for you on apply.unisi.it. For 2026/27, visa applicants applied from 18 March to 4 May 2026, and the later summer intake was open only to students who do not need a visa. [2][3]
Once you are admitted, we pre-enrol you on Universitaly to request the type D study visa. The 2027/28 calendar is not published yet: we check the admission calendar. [3]
How ApplyAZ helps
ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.
For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:
- We check your school results against Siena's entry rules for this programme.
- We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
- We prepare and submit your application on apply.unisi.it and Universitaly pre-enrolment.
- We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your DSU Toscana scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
- We prepare your visa file.
With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).
Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.
Questions and answers
What school results do I need for Siena's Economics and Management bachelor?
A secondary school diploma, or a foreign qualification recognised as suitable for university admission in Italy, plus English at B2. For 2026/27, non-EU visa applicants were selected on their school transcript and CV for 150 places, with offers sent in order of priority. [1][7]
Is there an entrance test?
No. For 2026/27, no CEnT-S or other test was required for admission. After enrolment, a TOLC-E, CEnT-S or English TOLC-E score checks your starting level, and a low score adds a first-year maths requirement. [1][4]
What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?
English at B2. Visa applicants need a recognised English certificate unless they are native speakers, and a medium-of-instruction letter is not accepted for this programme. The university keeps a separate list of accepted certificates, and we check which one your file can use. [1][5]
When is the deadline for non-EU students?
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants who needed a visa applied on apply.unisi.it from 18 March to 4 May 2026 and had no summer window. The 2027/28 dates are not yet published. [2][3]
Can I apply before I finish Class 12?
In 2025/26, students in their final school year could apply if they obtained their diploma by 24 September 2025, uploading a provisional certificate. The 2026/27 pages do not repeat this rule, so we confirm it for each intake. [7]
I studied commerce or arts in Class 12, not maths. Can I apply?
The admission rules do not name a required school stream. Your maths is checked after enrolment, and a low score adds a first-year requirement that you clear by retaking the test or passing Principles of Mathematics. [1][4]
Which curricula can I choose?
There are three curricula: Banking and Finance, Business and Management, and Economics and Social Sciences. [1]
How are the fees set?
For 2026/27, foreign citizens without a valid Italian ISEE pay a contribution scaled by their country's GDP per capita. DSU Toscana winners and eligible students are exempt from university contributions. [6]
Can someone handle my whole application to Economics and Management at Siena?
Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your school results against Siena's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the DSU Toscana scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students. Start by checking your eligibility.
I'm applying from India. What is the route into Economics and Management?
The course asks for a school-leaving diploma that gives access to university, so we check your Class 12 results from CBSE, CISCE or a state board, plus a recognised English certificate at B2. Selection rests on your transcript and CV. The steps are the apply.unisi.it application, the admission offer and Universitaly pre-enrolment. [1][2] Indian students apply for the type D study visa at the Italian embassy or consulate that covers their state, such as New Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Is the route different from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka?
No. The academic rules for Economics and Management are the same whatever your nationality. Applicants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka follow the same steps as India: online application on apply.unisi.it, the admission offer and Universitaly pre-enrolment, then a type D study visa from the Italian mission for their country of residence. Read our guide for students in Dhaka.
I live in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain. Where do I apply for the visa?
At the Italian embassy or consulate responsible for the country where you legally live, after Universitaly pre-enrolment. The academic rules for Economics and Management are the same whatever your nationality, and Gulf residents follow the same steps: online application on apply.unisi.it, the admission offer and Universitaly pre-enrolment. Read our guides for Dubai, Riyadh and Doha.
I studied or live in London, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. What is the route?
The academic rules for Economics and Management are the same whatever your nationality, and your school results are assessed like any other foreign qualification. Non-EU applicants who live abroad follow the same route: online application on apply.unisi.it, the admission offer and Universitaly pre-enrolment, then a type D study visa from the Italian mission for where they live.
