University of Milan Scholarship 2026/27: Amounts, Deadlines and Documents

Who can apply to the University of Milan grant from countries like India?

Full-time first-year students at the University of Milan can apply, even before enrolling (Bando 2026/27, art. 2, 3.2). A family abroad cannot obtain an ISEE (the Italian family income indicator), and families in countries like India, which are not on Annex 1, are assigned income band 1 automatically, with no foreign documents at application (art. 5.4).

Band 1 is the lowest-income band and pays the highest grant. The general limits in the bando (official call) are an ISEE of 26,887.93 EUR (about INR 29,57,000) and an ISPE (the family assets indicator) of 58,452.06 EUR (about INR 64,29,000), and both must be met (art. 5.2). The University may ask for the family's economic documents later for a check (art. 5.4).

Annex 1 lists 77 countries where income is produced, among them the UAE, the UK and the USA. For those families the University itself calculates the ISEE parificato (the income statement for families outside Italy) from the uploaded documents. The call does not say whether nationality or the country where the family earns decides, so for a family earning in an Annex 1 country we clarify this with the University before applying (art. 5.4).

How much is the University of Milan grant?

A fuori sede (living away from home) student in income band 1 receives 7,419 EUR in cash plus one meal a day at no cost, 8,248 EUR in total (about INR 9,07,000). Band 2 totals 7,172 EUR and band 3 totals 5,857 EUR (Bando 2026/27, art. 6.3.1). The amounts include the refund of the regional DSU tax.

• Pendolare (commuter), 61 to 90 minutes from the campus by public transport: 3,991 EUR in cash, 4,820 EUR in total in band 1 (art. 6.2, 6.3.1).
• In sede (living at home), up to 60 minutes away: 2,601 EUR in cash, 3,430 EUR in total in band 1 (art. 6.2, 6.3.1).
• Female students on S.T.E.M. courses: 20% more, up to 8,606.40 EUR in total as fuori sede, subject to available funds (art. 6.3.1).
• Courses taught more than 50% at a distance: a flat 500 EUR, with no meals (art. 6.3.1).
• Fuori sede status also needs paid accommodation within 60 minutes of the campus for at least 10 months between September 2026 and September 2027, proved by a registered lease or a residence declaration with fiscal receipts by 16 November 2026; without it, the pendolare amount is paid (art. 6.2).

Which documents does the family need from abroad for the University of Milan?

For a family whose income and assets are in a country like India, none at application: the student is assigned income band 1 automatically (Bando 2026/27, art. 5.4). The University may still request the family's economic documents later, and failing to produce originals requested by registered letter means losing the whole grant (art. 13.1 a).

Families in Annex 1 countries upload the documents listed in the section below, covering 2025 income and assets at 31 December 2025, by 30 September 2026, or by 7 August 2026 with a housing request (art. 5.4). The call mentions the codice fiscale (Italian tax code) only for the Italian ISEE (art. 5.1.3).

When are the University of Milan deadlines for 2026/27?

Applications run from 10 July to 30 September 2026 and must be completed and confirmed online by 23:59 Italian time on 30 September; unconfirmed applications are not considered (Bando 2026/27, preamble, art. 3.1). The provisional ranking is due by 31 October 2026 and the final ranking by 30 November 2026 (art. 9).

Students also requesting university housing had an earlier document deadline, 7 August 2026, now passed (art. 5.1, 5.4). Appeals against a negative result are due within 7 days of the provisional ranking (art. 9).

Fuori sede proof is due by 16 November 2026, or 31 January 2027 for Master's students enrolling later, and the first-year credit check falls on 10 August 2027 (art. 6.2, 4.2.2). Our DSU deadlines page puts these dates next to the other Italian calls.

How and when is the University of Milan grant paid?

The grant is paid in two equal instalments. The first is ordered by 31 December 2026, or from January 2027 for Master's first-years not yet enrolled; the second is ordered by 31 October 2027, once the credit check is passed (Bando 2026/27, art. 10.1). The University keeps 414.50 EUR from the first instalment for meals (art. 6.4.1).

Money goes only to the Carta La Statale, the university badge, once it is activated as the Flash Up Studio La Statale prepaid card in person at an Intesa Sanpaolo branch (art. 10). A payment order is not yet the credit, which depends on the bank's timing (art. 10.1).

How many credits do you need to keep the University of Milan grant?

First-year Bachelor's and single-cycle students need 35 CFU (university credits) by 10 August 2027, with a 5-credit bonus applied automatically if needed. First-year Master's students need 20 CFU on open-access courses or 23 on restricted-access courses, with no bonus (Bando 2026/27, art. 4.2.2).

Only complete exams, internships, electives, labs, seminars, Erasmus exams and validated language certificates count; credits from activities before enrolment do not (art. 4.2.2). What happens if you miss the credits at the University of Milan?

Credits reached between 10 August and 30 November 2027 keep the first instalment but lose the second, halve the fee exemption and mean repaying meals used beyond the 414.50 EUR kept. Missing them by 30 November 2027 means repaying the first instalment and the meals used, and losing the fee exemption (Bando 2026/27, art. 4.2.3, 6.4.1).

Withdrawing or transferring during 2026/27 also leads to repayment, unless a first-year student has already met the credit requirement (art. 13.1 c, 13.3).

Can you get a residence bed with the University of Milan grant?

This call does not assign beds: university housing has its own call, and this one only sets 7 August 2026 as the document deadline for students also requesting housing, which has passed (Bando 2026/27, art. 5.1, 5.4). A paid place in a University of Milan residence counts as fuori sede accommodation (art. 6.2, 6.3.1).

University housing is compatible with the grant, while places at no cost or at reduced rates won on merit or income in other colleges or residences are not (art. 12). The call states no bed-cost deduction from the grant. More on living in Milan.

Documents from abroad for the University of Milan 2026/27 call

For families in countries like India, which are not on Annex 1, the University of Milan asks for no foreign documents at application and assigns income band 1 (art. 5.4). Families in the 77 Annex 1 countries upload the documents below as PDFs by 30 September 2026, or by 7 August 2026 with a housing request (art. 3.2, 5.4).

• Family composition certificate from a registry office or other competent public body; with one parent, it states whether separated or divorced, widowed or not living together, and a non-cohabiting parent's data are needed (art. 5.4).
• Income received in calendar year 2025 by every household member, stating whether from employment, self-employment or pension, with a statement of no income for anyone without income (art. 5.4).
• Movable assets of every member at 31 December 2025: deposits, shares or investment securities, life insurance and the net worth of any company owned, or a statement of none (art. 5.4).
• Real estate of every member at 31 December 2025, with the square metres of each property and whether it is the family home, or a statement of none (art. 5.4).
• All issued by the home-country authorities, then legalised and translated into Italian by the Italian diplomatic or consular representation; where that is particularly difficult, by the foreign country's representation in Italy, with Prefettura legalisation (art. 5.4). The call does not mention the apostille.
• Uploaded only as PDF files on the University's online application page; originals only if requested later by registered letter (art. 3.2, 13.1 a).

Frequently asked questions about University of Milan

Can part-time students get the University of Milan grant?

No. The call is open only to students enrolled full-time, and part-time students are excluded from the ranking, as are students who enrol with a shortened career after recognition of study at a foreign university, and students who already hold an Italian degree at the same or a higher level (art. 2).

When do the daily meals start with the University of Milan grant?

Winners eat one meal a day at no cost from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2027: lunch, Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays, August and closure days, with the Carta La Statale. Before January, meals cost the subsidised rate of the student's income band, and unused meals are not refunded (art. 6.4).

I have not finished my Bachelor's yet. Can I apply for a Master's grant at the University of Milan?

Yes. First-year Master's applicants do not need to have graduated when they apply and can send their Bachelor's details later (art. 3.2). If not yet enrolled at the final ranking, they are conditional beneficiaries and receive the first instalment from January 2027, once enrolment is completed within the University's deadlines (art. 9, 10.1.1).

Can I combine this grant with another scholarship?

Not with a similar one. Students who receive another scholarship for the same year from a public or private body are excluded, and the grant cannot be combined with Italian Foreign Ministry scholarships for foreign students. It can be combined with study-abroad contributions and the University's paid student collaborations (art. 2, 12).

Does being eligible mean I will receive the money?

Not always. Grants are awarded until the available funds run out, and if funds fall short the University may consider extra grants within its budget (art. 1, 9). First-years are ranked by an income score; the call does not say which value is used for students assigned band 1 automatically (art. 8.1).

Is there extra money for a study period abroad?

Yes. Eligible students and winners can receive a mobility supplement of 600 EUR a month for up to 10 months, plus a travel refund of up to 100 EUR within Europe or 500 EUR outside Europe, requested together with the grant application (art. 7.1). Graduating within the normal duration can add half of the last-year grant, if funds allow (art. 7.2).

Is the University of Milan grant taxed?

No. The regional grant is exempt from Italian income tax under a Finance Ministry circular, although the University still issues a Certificazione Unica showing the cash paid and the value of the meals retained (art. 1).
