Entry requirements

Detailed entry requirements

Udine's Economics master asks for a three-year bachelor's or recognised foreign equivalent in economics or another subject with an economics or quantitative focus, English at B2, and a positive pre-evaluation of your foreign degree. Access is unrestricted, with no entrance test and no minimum grade. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]

The degree rule

You need a three-year university degree or a recognised equivalent. [3] For applicants with a foreign degree, the 2026/27 notice asks for a bachelor's in economics or another degree with a focus on economics or on quantitative subjects, such as accounting, business, engineering, mathematics, physics, science or statistics. It sets no minimum final grade for this programme. [1]

Your degree must be an official first-cycle qualification from an accredited institution that gives access to second-cycle study in its own country. [1]

What this means for your transcript

Udine names fields rather than credit counts, and an academic committee reads your transcript and syllabus to judge the focus of your degree. [1] As a guide, based on the rule above:

  • Usually a fit: a BA or B.Sc. in Economics, a B.Com or BBA, a B.Sc. in Mathematics, Statistics or Physics, or a B.Tech or B.E., since economics, accounting, business, mathematics, statistics, physics and engineering are all named in the rule.
  • Check carefully: a BCA, a B.Sc. in Computer Science, or a B.Sc. in Chemistry or Biology. These are either not named or fall under the broad science heading, so the weight of maths, statistics and economics on your transcript matters.
  • Often short: a BA in subjects such as History, English or Sociology with little economics, maths or statistics, or a professional degree such as an LLB.

English

English at CEFR level B2 or equivalent, with no Italian requirement for this programme. [1][2] Certificates must be from the last five years and show the level achieved. Udine accepts Cambridge English, Trinity College London, IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, Pearson General English, Oxford Test of English, LanguageCert International ESOL, Gatehouse Awards Classic and British Council Aptis ESOL General or Advanced. [1]

You are exempt if you completed a school programme taught in English, such as an IB diploma or a multilingual school, or if you are a native English speaker. Without a certificate, the academic committee may assess your English in an online interview. You can apply while waiting for your test result, but the certificate is needed to enrol. [1]

Pre-evaluation instead of an entrance test

Access is unrestricted, so there is no entrance test. [3] Instead, an academic committee reviews your foreign degree in a pre-evaluation and emails the outcome within 30 working days of a complete application. [1] The answer is denied, approved, or approved with restrictions, and an approval leads to the next admission steps. [4]

2026/27 deadlines

For 2026/27, non-EU applicants submitted the pre-evaluation on the Elix-Forms platform between 1 February and 31 May 2026. Universitaly pre-enrolment for the study visa closed on 30 June 2026, and later applications were not considered. [1] The 2027/28 notice is not yet published.

Documents and non-EU steps

On Elix-Forms you upload your final or provisional bachelor's certificate, transcript or Diploma Supplement, course syllabus, valid passport, updated CV, a CIMEA statement or declaration of value, and your English certificate. The last two can follow the pre-evaluation but are needed to enrol. Only complete applications are assessed. [1]

After preliminary acceptance, Udine emails a letter of eligibility for enrolment and you complete Universitaly pre-enrolment, which the university validates and forwards to the consulate for the study visa. For 2026/27, Udine reserved 30 places on this programme for non-EU applicants living abroad. [1][2]

Visa applicants can enrol only in the course chosen on Universitaly, and cannot change course or transfer to another Italian university during the first year. [1]

About the programme

The master's in Economics (Economics, Scienze economiche) is a two-year degree of 120 ECTS in class LM-56, taught in English at the University of Udine in north-east Italy. It is one of five master's degrees the university teaches entirely in English, and access is open. [1][3]

The course gives advanced theoretical and empirical training in economics. It covers economic theory, applied economics and policy issues, with mathematical and statistical methods used throughout. It suits graduates in economics and in subjects with a quantitative focus, such as accounting, business, engineering, mathematics, physics or statistics. [1][3]

What you will study

You choose one of two curricula after a shared core in economic theory and quantitative methods. Course units, electives and the final thesis are listed each year in the university syllabus.

  • Economics curriculum: a general training across the core fields of economics
  • Sustainable Development curriculum: advanced courses on the dimensions of sustainability
  • Economic theory at an advanced level
  • Applied economics and economic policy
  • Mathematical and statistical methods for economic analysis
  • Market-based tools and policies for the ecological transition (Sustainable Development curriculum)

Career paths

Graduates can take specialised and managerial roles in the public and private sectors. The university names research centres, financial institutions, banks and consulting firms as typical employers, along with authorities and other firms. The degree also prepares students for PhD study in Italy and abroad. [3]

Fees and scholarships

The University of Udine calculates tuition from family income through the ISEE, with lower fees for low-income students and exemptions set by its fee rules. We check the current fee regulation on the Uniud fees page before you enrol. The regional scholarship in Friuli Venezia Giulia is run by ARDiS, and eligible international students can apply; the region decides awards.

How to apply from outside the EU

Non-EU applicants living abroad request a pre-evaluation on the Elix-Forms platform through the Economics link on the Uniud English degrees page. For 2026/27 the window ran from 1 February to 31 May 2026, with an outcome within 30 working days. You need your degree, transcript and syllabus, CV, passport, a B2 English certificate and a CIMEA statement or declaration of value; the last two can follow the pre-evaluation but are needed to enrol. Universitaly pre-enrolment had to be completed by 30 June 2026. [1] For 2026/27, Udine reserved 30 places on this programme for non-EU applicants living abroad. [2] The 2027/28 notice is not yet out.

How ApplyAZ helps

ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.

For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:

  • We check your transcript against Udine's entry rules for this programme.
  • We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
  • We prepare and submit your Elix-Forms pre-evaluation request and Universitaly pre-enrolment.
  • We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your regional DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
  • We prepare your visa file.

With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).

Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.

Questions and answers

What bachelor's degree do I need for Udine's Economics master?

A three-year bachelor's or recognised equivalent in economics, or another degree with a focus on economics or on quantitative subjects such as accounting, business, engineering, mathematics, physics, science or statistics. For 2026/27, Udine set no minimum final grade for this programme. [1]

Is there an entrance exam?

No. Access is unrestricted, so there is no entrance test. Applicants with a foreign degree go through a pre-evaluation instead: an academic committee reviews your degree, transcript, syllabus and CV and emails the outcome within 30 working days. [1]

What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?

English at B2. IELTS is one accepted certificate, along with TOEFL, Cambridge, PTE Academic, Oxford Test of English, LanguageCert and others, and it must be from the last five years. Schooling taught in English or being a native speaker can exempt you. [1]

When is the deadline for non-EU students?

For 2026/27, the Elix-Forms pre-evaluation window ran from 1 February to 31 May 2026, and Universitaly pre-enrolment closed on 30 June 2026. Udine has not yet published its 2027/28 notice, and we plan your application around it. [1]

Can I apply with a provisional degree certificate?

Yes. The 2026/27 notice accepts a final or provisional bachelor's certificate at pre-evaluation. The CIMEA statement or declaration of value and your English certificate can follow later, but you need them to enrol. [1]

I have a B.Com, BBA or BCA. Can I apply?

A B.Com or BBA sits within the named fields of accounting and business. A BCA is not on the example list, but the rule also covers degrees with a quantitative focus, so the maths and statistics on your transcript matter. The committee decides in the pre-evaluation. [1]

How many places are there for non-EU students?

For 2026/27, Udine reserved 30 places on the Economics master for applicants residing in non-EU countries, with English at B2 and no Italian requirement. The 2027/28 figures are not yet published. [2]

Which curricula can I choose?

Two: Economics, a general training in economic theory, applied economics and policy, and Sustainable Development, with advanced courses on sustainability, market-based tools and public policy for the ecological transition. [3]

Can someone handle my whole application to Economics at Udine?

Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your transcript against Udine's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the regional DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students. Start by checking your eligibility.

I'm applying from India. What is the route into Economics?

A recognised three-year Indian bachelor's in economics, or a B.Com, BBA, B.Tech, B.E. or B.Sc. with a clear economics or quantitative focus, can meet Udine's rule, and you also need English at B2. There is no entrance test and no minimum grade. The steps are the Elix-Forms pre-evaluation, the letter of eligibility and Universitaly pre-enrolment. [1] Indian students apply for the type D study visa at the Italian embassy or consulate that covers their state, such as New Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.

Is the route different from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka?

No. The academic rules for Economics are the same whatever your nationality. Applicants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka follow the same steps as India: Elix-Forms pre-evaluation, letter of eligibility for enrolment and Universitaly pre-enrolment, then a type D study visa from the Italian mission for their country of residence. Read our guide for students in Dhaka.

I live in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain. Where do I apply for the visa?

At the Italian embassy or consulate responsible for the country where you legally live, after Universitaly pre-enrolment. The academic rules for Economics are the same whatever your nationality, and Gulf residents follow the same steps: Elix-Forms pre-evaluation, letter of eligibility for enrolment and Universitaly pre-enrolment. Read our guides for Dubai, Riyadh and Doha.

I studied or live in London, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. What is the route?

The academic rules for Economics are the same whatever your nationality, and your degree is assessed like any other foreign qualification. Non-EU applicants who live abroad follow the same route: Elix-Forms pre-evaluation, letter of eligibility for enrolment and Universitaly pre-enrolment, then a type D study visa from the Italian mission for where they live. Read our guides for students in London, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
