How tuition works at the University of Ferrara
At the University of Ferrara, tuition follows family income, the same for every course in 2026/27, and an ISEE up to €27,000 falls in the no-tax area. The contribution follows the family ISEE, or translated and legalised income documents for families abroad, and study can be tuition-free for eligible students who win an ER.GO scholarship.
From the second year, the fee also depends on credits earned and years enrolled. After a first instalment, the contribution is paid in three equal instalments, the last two by 15 February and 17 May 2027.
Source: Bando Unife 2026/2027: Costi d'iscrizione, Benefici e agevolazioni.
Families with income or assets abroad can pay the same as families with an ISEE: they file their 2025 family, income and property details with certificates from the home country, translated into Italian and legalised, as Unife's English guide to the foreign income form explains. The deadline is 2 November 2026, or 15 December with a late surcharge; the Bando sets no flat fee by country, and the ER.GO scholarship has its own, earlier deadline. Source: Ferrara, ISEE and income from abroad.
Worked example: If Unife's check of the family's translated and legalised income documents gives an ISEE-equivalent of €15,000, a first-year student from India falls inside the no-tax area in 2026/27 (derived). Without the documents by 15 December 2026, the top band applies, on every course. We prepare the translated and legalised documents and the online form with you, and the ER.GO scholarship application with you at the same time.

Check your eligibilityWhich entry tests and language levels does the University of Ferrara ask for?
The University of Ferrara uses CISIA's TOLC tests to assess starting knowledge on open-access bachelor's degrees, not to select. Architecture, the health professions, and Medicine and Dentistry follow national restricted access, while English-taught master's check the degree and documents instead of setting a test. The route for each programme is in the table above.
| Test or route | Used for | Source |
|---|
| TOLC by CISIA (E, I, S, B, F, SU, AV, PSI) | Open-access bachelor's and single-cycle degrees: an assessment of starting knowledge with extra learning requirements (OFA), not a selection; for example compulsory TOLC-I for Informatica and optional TOLC-S for Physics | Unife TOLC page (updated July 2026) |
| National restricted-access procedures | Architecture and the health professions, with places set nationally; Medicine and Surgery and Dentistry, taught in Italian, through the national open first semester (semestre filtro) | Restricted-access courses page |
| Local selection | Industrial Product Design, Molecular Biology, two Biotechnology degrees and adapted sport sciences: a selection set in each 2026/27 call (a route, not an entry test) | Enrolment news, 10 July 2026 |
| Requirements check on apply.unife.it | English-taught master's such as Physics, Green Economy and Sustainable Transitions and Small Business Management: open access, with the degree and documents checked (a route, not an entry test) | Unife course catalogue |
The table sets out what Ferrara's 2026/27 pages for international students ask for at each degree level.
| Degree level (example, 2026/27) | Entry route | English | At application | At enrolment |
|---|
| Master's (Physics, English-taught) | Open access with a requirements check: the degree and documents are evaluated on apply.unife.it (12 January to 30 April) | An internationally recognised B2 certificate for the visa, if English is not your mother tongue | School diploma, bachelor's degree and transcript, translated into Italian and legalised, the syllabus or Diploma Supplement in English or Italian, and language proof where the course asks for it | Within a month of the visa: the originals with legalisations and translations, the residence permit receipt and ID, checked in person; missing documents by 31 January |
| Bachelor's (open access, taught in Italian) | Application on apply.unife.it (7 April to 31 July), then a TOLC assessment for many courses; national or local selection for restricted courses | A B2 certificate for the visa, if English is not your mother tongue | A school diploma from at least 12 years of schooling, translated into Italian with legalisation or apostille, language proof where required, and national exam results where the home country has one | The same in-person check of originals within a month of the visa, with the residence permit receipt |

Ferrara's fee call also rewards top marks: first-year students who finished school with 100 e lode, or a first degree with 110 e lode for a master's, pay only the first instalment, and a foreign mark counts only if it corresponds exactly (Bando Unife 2026/27, p. 17). The call names no scholarship of its own for international students, so for students from countries like India the ER.GO scholarship is the award we prepare.
Two national schemes are open to international students too: our guides to the MAECI scholarship and Invest Your Talent in Italy explain who can apply.

Reality check
- Master's deadlines come early. For 2026/27, Ferrara's three English-taught master's took applications on apply.unife.it only from 12 January to 30 April, two months before its other master's closed.
- Only complete files are evaluated. Ferrara evaluates an application once every document is uploaded, and the originals, legalisations and translations are checked again in person within a month of the visa.
- Documents decide the fee. Families with income abroad pay by the ISEE bands only if their translated and legalised income documents arrive by 2 November 2026, or 15 December with a late surcharge; otherwise the top band applies.
- Italian still matters. Most degrees in Ferrara's course catalogue are taught in Italian, and daily life and internships in Ferrara need Italian too.
What we handle: the shortlist, the fee route, the income documents, the programme applications, the Universitaly pre-enrolment, the visa file and the ER.GO application, prepared with you. The university decides admission, the region decides the DSU scholarship and the consulate decides the visa.
