In short

  • What a MIM is here: our catalogue lists 23 English-taught management master's for 2027/28 at 21 Italian public universities. Each is a two-year laurea magistrale of 120 ECTS for recent graduates, and none of the five university pages we reopened asks for work experience.
  • What it costs: a MIM at a public university can be tuition-free for eligible students. For a family whose income is in India, 2026/27 fees ran from €346 a year at the University of Milan to €2,998 at the University of Padua. That is about ₹37,800 to ₹3.28 lakh at the ECB rate of 25 September 2026 (€1 = ₹109.2605).
  • Who gets in: a bachelor's at EQF level 6 with enough business or economics credits. GMAT or GRE is optional or encouraged at 4 of the 23 programmes and compulsory at none.
  • When: classes start in autumn 2027. The University of Padua's first 2027/28 call closes on 15 November 2026, and visa applications close on 31 October 2027.
  • ApplyAZ, an independent study-in-Italy consultancy with offices in Milan and India, works only with Italian public universities and takes no commission from them. For eligible students, we handle the applications, Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU scholarship application and the visa file.

What is a Master in Management in Italy?

In Italy, a Master in Management is a two-year laurea magistrale worth 120 ECTS, taken straight after a bachelor's. The University of Bologna explains that these second-cycle degrees are its Master of Science programmes. No public university awards a separate "MIM" title: the label describes the content, usually in class LM-77.

Class LM-77 is Italy's national class for business and management sciences (Scienze economico-aziendali). The University of Milan, Tor Vergata and Turin all file their English management degrees under it. A few tourism degrees sit in LM-49, which covers the planning and management of tourism systems.

How we built the list: we counted every English-only two-year master's in our catalogue's Business category with "management" in its name. We left out one finance-only degree (Finance and Risk Management at Florence, class LM-16). We also left out two that the university pages show are not fully in English: Trento's Management and Urbino's Economics, Management and Finance.

We then added two degrees called Business Administration, at Tor Vergata and Turin. Both university pages show a two-year LM-77 laurea magistrale entered with a bachelor's, so they work as management degrees for graduates. That gives 23 programmes at 21 universities.

Management engineering is a different route. Our catalogue has 7 English-taught master's in management engineering or engineering management, which are engineering degrees for engineering graduates. We cover them with the MS in Italy guide rather than here.

Which English-taught MIM programmes can you apply to for 2027/28?

MIM vs MBA vs MSc in management: which fits you?

Choose a MIM or an MSc in management as a recent graduate, and an MBA only after several years of work. At Italian public universities the MIM and the MSc are the same two-year laurea magistrale. The University of Bologna's Global MBA for 2026/27 is a different award: it costs €35,000 and asks for three years' experience.

FeatureMIM or MSc in management (laurea magistrale)Bologna Global MBA (first-level professional master)
What you receiveA second-cycle degree, the same level as any Italian master's degreeA first-level professional master, a university's own postgraduate award
Length and credits2 years, 120 ECTSAnnual; a professional master usually awards 60 ECTS
Who it is forGraduates with little or no work experienceProfessionals: Bologna asks for three years of cumulative work experience
TestsGMAT or GRE optional or encouraged at 4 of our 23 programmesBologna asks for GMAT 600 or GRE equivalent, or its own aptitude test
Fee, 2026/27Can be tuition-free for eligible students; €1,357.04 a year at Bologna for citizens of non-OECD countries such as India€35,000 for Bologna's Global MBA (₹38.24 lakh)
PhD accessYes: a laurea magistrale opens a PhDNo: Bologna states a professional master is not valid for PhD admission
DSU grantDegree students can apply to their region's DSU callOutside the DSU calls we read: DSU Toscana, for example, covers degree courses, PhDs and specialisation schools only

Other MBAs at public-university schools are not all university masters; Bologna Business School's executive formats carry no ECTS credits, as our list of public MBA schools shows.

The name can mislead. Tor Vergata's "Master of Science in Business Administration" is an LM-77 laurea magistrale for graduates, not an MBA, and Turin's Business Administration is the same kind of degree. If you already have three or more years of work, read our MBA in Italy guide and the list of public MBA schools.

Can you do a MIM in Italy after a BCom or BBA from India?

Yes, in most cases: your BCom or BBA must be a first-cycle degree at EQF level 6 that opens a master's at home, as the MUR circular for 2026/27 and 2027/28 requires. The course must also contain enough business credits. The University of Bologna asks for 36 credits in listed economics, business, statistics, maths, engineering and law subjects.

Credit rules differ by programme. Trento's International Management asks for at least 60 credits across economics, business, statistics and private law, and had 30 places for non-EU applicants living abroad in 2026/27. Bologna also accepts graduates of engineering, statistics and political science classes into International Management.

The University of Padua is stricter about the length of an Indian degree: its 2027/28 country list accepts a 3- or 4-year Honours bachelor's. A 3-year pass or general degree counts only with a postgraduate bachelor's or at least a 1-year master's. The minimum grade is 70 out of 100, or 7.0 out of 10.

We map your transcript against each programme's credit list before anything is filed, so you only apply where your degree fits. Engineering graduates can also look at management engineering in the MS guide.

Do you need GMAT or GRE for a MIM in Italy?

No: none of the 23 management master's in our catalogue makes GMAT or GRE compulsory for 2027/28. Four programmes mention a score as optional or encouraged. In Bologna's 2026/27 call, a GRE or GMAT score was worth up to 8 of the 100 points in the CV assessment, so it helps without deciding the result.

How the programme selectsProgrammesExamples
CV and grades only7Ferrara, Udine, Tor Vergata, Padua, Trento (two)
Assessment that includes an interview5Bologna, Bergamo, Insubria, Macerata, Palermo
Test or interview only below a grade threshold4Modena and Reggio Emilia, Pisa, Siena, Parthenope
The university's own admission test6Milan, Turin, Parma, Ca' Foscari, Sassari, Catanzaro
Credit check against the call1Sapienza

Trento also accepts a GMAT score of 580 on the Classic edition, or 545 on the Focus edition, as one way to show English. Padua encourages GMAT or GRE for Management for Sustainable Firms. A strong score is worth adding when your grades sit near a cut-off.

Do you need work experience for a MIM in Italy?

No: the five university pages we reopened, at Bologna, Trento, Milan, Tor Vergata and Turin, ask for a relevant bachelor's, not work experience, and Bologna and Milan also state English at B2. Milan's Management of Innovation and Entrepreneurship asks for a CV covering study and any work, but work is not a condition. Experience matters for an MBA instead.

Internships and part-time jobs still help a CV, especially where the committee scores CV consistency. At Bologna that criterion was worth up to 30 of 100 points in 2026/27.

How much does a MIM in Italy cost in 2026/27?

A MIM at an Italian public university can be tuition-free for eligible students, and fees stay low even without an exemption. For 2026/27, a family whose income is in India paid €346 or €402 at the University of Milan. It paid €1,357.04 at the University of Bologna and €2,998 at the University of Padua.

University and programme2026/27 fee, family income in IndiaHow it is set
University of Milan: Management of Innovation and Entrepreneurship€346 or €402 a year (₹37,800 or ₹43,900)€146 first instalment plus a fixed second instalment of €200 or €256 for Group A countries, which include India
University of Bologna: International Management€1,357.04 a year (₹1.48 lakh)Reduced fixed fee for citizens of non-OECD countries: €1,200 plus €157.04 for a new second-cycle student
University of Padua: Management for Sustainable Firms€2,998 a year (₹3.28 lakh)Fixed fee of €2,790 for non-EU students whose household lives outside Italy (Group A programmes), plus €192 regional fee and €16 stamp duty

The DSU scholarship can cover much more than the fee. In Emilia-Romagna, which funds Bologna students, the 2026/27 grant for a student living away from home was €7,171.11 for a family ISEE up to €16,666.67, rising by 15% to €8,246.78 with an ISEE up to €12,500. It fell to €3,585.56 near the €25,000 ceiling.

Each region runs its own call, so read our DSU scholarship guide and the Emilia-Romagna page.

Living costs come on top. The universities publish their own monthly estimates for the cities in our list:

For the visa you must show €10,179.85 a year (₹11.12 lakh), the figure in the MUR circular for 2026/27 and 2027/28. Our cost of studying in Italy guide breaks down rent and food by city.

Which Italian public universities rank best for business and management?

The University of Bologna is the best-ranked public university with an English management master's on our list. It sits at =126 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for Business and Management Studies. Politecnico di Milano ranks higher, at =66, but its management degree is management engineering rather than a MIM.

When are the MIM deadlines for 2027/28?

Deadlines for 2027/28 open in stages from autumn 2026, and the fixed end point is the visa. Universitaly states that visa applications for 2027/28 must reach the consulate by 31 October 2027. The University of Padua opened its first 2027/28 call on 15 September 2026, and it closes on 15 November 2026.

Other calls follow over the winter: Bologna's 2026/27 call for International Management has expired and Trento still shows its 2026/27 call, with no 2027/28 dates yet. Ca' Foscari has closed 2026/27 to non-EU applicants who need a visa. We track each call and file in the first round that fits your documents.

Courses start in autumn only. Padua states that direct enrolment in the second semester is not available, so a February start is not an option for this degree. See our intakes guide for every university's pattern.

What do management graduates earn in Italy?

Most economics and management master's graduates in Italy are working within a year. AlmaLaurea's survey for 2025 found 86.3% of 2024 master's graduates in the economics group employed one year after graduating, earning €1,581 net a month on average. Five years out, 96.3% were employed, at €2,006 a month.

These figures cover all graduates of Italian economics master's, not only international students, so treat them as a guide. After graduating you can convert your study permit into a job-search permit lasting from 9 to 12 months, for work that fits your degree.

How we handle a MIM application for you

The work starts with your transcript. We match your credits against each programme's entry list and agree a shortlist of English-taught programmes at public universities with you. You approve every programme before we apply, and a named person on our team handles each stage.

We then prepare a European-format CV and a statement of purpose for each programme, and file the applications on each university portal. After admission we complete your Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU scholarship application for your region and your visa file.

Some documents only your family can obtain: degree certificates and transcripts attested by the State Higher Education Department and apostilled by the MEA, bank statements and income tax returns. We tell you exactly which documents to get, in which order, and check every page before the visa appointment. Our student visa guide explains the file.

Reality check

Who decides what: the university decides admission and your fee band. The region decides the DSU scholarship, and the consulate decides the visa. We handle the work on each step, but we never promise any of these outcomes.

What we handle. For eligible students we check each programme's credit rules against your degree, file the applications and complete Universitaly pre-enrolment. We also prepare the DSU application and the visa file, and review every document before it is submitted.

The usual MIM pitfalls, and what each costs:

  • A 3-year pass BCom sent to Padua. Its 2027/28 India list needs an Honours degree or a postgraduate qualification, so the application fails and the first call is lost.
  • Too few credits in the listed subjects. Bologna asks for 36 and Trento for 60, and a shortfall means rejection at the first check, however strong the grades.
  • Missing the first round. Padua's first call closes on 15 November 2026; later rounds leave less time before the 31 October 2027 visa deadline.
  • Skipping the regional DSU call. In Emilia-Romagna that meant losing up to €8,246.78 (about ₹9.01 lakh) for 2026/27, plus the fee exemption that usually comes with the grant.
  • Choosing an MBA by mistake. Bologna's Global MBA costs €35,000, against €1,357.04 a year for its International Management degree, and gives no PhD access.
  • Funds that do not show on the statements. The Kolkata consulate's 2026/27 checklist asks for €10,179.85 a year on an original 6-month bank statement stamped and signed by the branch manager, and an education loan must already be deposited and visible on it. Cost: a visa file that does not meet the checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is a MIM in Italy one year or two years long?

Two years: an Italian MIM is a laurea magistrale of 120 ECTS. The one-year courses sold as masters are masters universitari of about 60 credits, which the University of Bologna says do not give PhD access. Our guide to one-year masters in Italy explains when a shorter course still makes sense.

Can I apply for a MIM in Italy with an engineering degree?

Often, yes. Bologna's International Management accepts graduates of the engineering classes L-8 and L-9, or 36 credits in listed economics, statistics, maths, computer science, engineering and law subjects. Trento asks for 60 credits in economics, business, statistics and private law, and we compare your transcript with each list before choosing where to apply.

Is IELTS compulsory for a MIM in Italy?

Not always: most universities ask for B2 English, and each decides which proof it takes. Trento accepts an English-taught previous degree or a GMAT score among its options. For the visa, the Kolkata consulate accepts a B2 certificate or a medium-of-instruction declaration from your college.

Can I work part-time during a MIM in Italy?

Yes: a study permit allows paid work of up to 20 hours a week, with an annual limit of 1,040 hours, as the Ministry of Labour's integration portal quotes the rule. Study must stay your main activity, so plan any job around lectures and exam sessions.

What minimum percentage do I need for a MIM in Italy?

There is no national minimum, but universities set their own. For Indian degrees the University of Padua asks for at least 70 out of 100, or 7.0 out of 10, for 2027/28. Bologna gives academic merit up to 40 of its 100 CV points, so grades count everywhere.

Are there scholarships for a MIM in Italy?

Yes, mainly the regional DSU grant, set by family income and assets. In Emilia-Romagna the 2026/27 grant for students living away from home was €7,171.11 with a family ISEE up to €16,666.67, and €8,246.78 up to €12,500. Winners usually pay no tuition either, and we prepare the DSU application with you.

How does ApplyAZ charge for a MIM application?

Students and families pay us, and universities never do. After the eligibility check and a consultation, you pay step by step as results arrive: a starting fee, then admission, DSU and visa fees. The amounts vary by country and are never shown as one figure; our page on how ApplyAZ gets paid explains the terms.
