- One main intake: for students applying from abroad, degree courses in Italy start once a year, in September or October. The 2027/28 intake starts in autumn 2027, and the study visa application must be lodged by 31 October 2027.
- Applications close months earlier: university rounds for visa applicants run from autumn to spring. The University of Padua's first 2027/28 call is open now and closes on 15 November 2026. In 2026/27, most other rounds for visa applicants closed between February and May 2026.
- February is the exception: the one second-semester route we verified for applicants living abroad is Politecnico di Milano's engineering master's, whose February 2027 call ran from 18 May to 18 June 2026. Elsewhere, second-semester entry is closed or kept for students already in Italy or the EU.

How many intakes are there in Italy?
Italy has one main intake for degree courses: classes start in September or October, and the academic year runs to the following September (Eurydice, updated 30 July 2026). Semesters split the year, but they are not separate intakes. For students applying from abroad, only a few programmes admit new students in February.
Each university sets its own calendar. The University of Pavia, for example, says programmes start in early October and the second semester runs from early March to late July. That second semester continues the same year for students who started in the autumn.
We also checked all 500 English-taught programmes in our catalogue, at 53 public universities. 439 record an autumn start: 54 in October, 3 in September and 382 in the autumn with the 2027/28 calendar pending. The other 61 record no month, and none lists February or March.
Why does Italy have mainly one intake?
Italy has mainly one intake because degree courses run on one academic year, and the ministry sets one visa deadline a year for them: 30 November 2026 for 2026/27 and 31 October 2027 for 2027/28 (MUR procedures, published on Universitaly). Universities fill their places for visa applicants once, months before classes start.
Four rules shape the calendar:
- The year starts in the autumn. Eurydice lists the start of the 2026/27 academic year as October, with teaching in semesters set by each university.
- One visa deadline per year. The MUR procedures for 2026/27 and 2027/28 fix the visa deadline for bachelor's, master's and single-cycle courses, and let universities set earlier dates course by course.
- Visas take time. The Kolkata consulate checklist says processing can take up to 90 days, so universities close rounds for visa applicants in spring.
- Late rounds are for students already in Europe. Florence's third round, Turin's later calls, Tor Vergata's fourth intake, Milano-Bicocca's third and fourth calls and Politecnico di Torino's November call are closed to applicants who need a visa.
Places are counted once, too. The University of Pisa set 4,500 places for non-EU visa applicants in 2026/27, and a Universitaly pre-enrolment covers one university and one programme (University of Milan).
When do Italian universities open applications for the 2027/28 intake?
Most public universities open their first round for visa applicants between October and December, about a year before classes start. For 2027/28, the University of Padua's first call is already open, from 15 September to 15 November 2026. Most others had not published 2027/28 dates on 28 September 2026, so the table shows their 2026/27 rounds.
The table covers 16 public universities with many English-taught programmes. Dates are for non-EU applicants living abroad, from each university's own admissions page or call. Where a row says 2026/27, read it as last year's pattern: we track each university and apply in the right round for you.

Two patterns stand out. Most first rounds open between October and December, and the last round of the year is usually closed to visa applicants. Final-year students can apply before graduating: Tor Vergata accepts applicants who have not yet completed their bachelor's, and Trento asks non-Europeans to graduate by 30 June 2026.
Is there a February intake in Italy?
Only in a few cases, and rarely for students applying from abroad. The one route we verified is Politecnico di Milano's engineering master's: its February 2027 general call ran from 18 May to 18 June 2026. Padua says direct second-semester enrolment is not available, and Politecnico di Torino keeps it for students residing in Italy.
Lists online often name Padua, Politecnico di Torino and Florence as spring-intake universities. Their own pages say otherwise, as this table shows. We read each call before we plan a February start with you.

When should I apply for the September 2027 intake in Italy?
Apply in the first or second round, between September 2026 and February 2027, for the widest choice. In 2026/27, first rounds for visa applicants opened between 1 October 2025 (Politecnico di Milano) and 22 January 2026 (University of Milan), and most final rounds for visa applicants had closed by May 2026.
Early rounds help in four ways:
- More programmes are open. Late rounds shut out visa applicants at Florence, Turin, Tor Vergata and Milano-Bicocca.
- Faster results. Politecnico di Milano encourages applications by its 1 December early-bird date to receive results sooner.
- Scholarship rounds. Ca' Foscari offered its financial aid for high-achieving students in the first and second admission rounds only for 2026/27.
- Time for documents and the visa. The DOV or CIMEA statement, Universitaly pre-enrolment and a visa that can take up to 90 days all come after admission.

What does the 2027/28 timeline look like, month by month?
The 2027/28 journey takes about a year: university rounds from September 2026 to spring 2027, Universitaly pre-enrolment from May 2027, the DSU call in the summer, the visa by 31 October 2027 and classes from September or October 2027. The months below follow the 2026/27 calendar; we handle each step for eligible students.

What is the visa deadline for the 2027/28 intake?
The last day to lodge a study visa application for 2027/28 degree courses is 31 October 2027, set by the ministry's procedures for 2026/27 and 2027/28 on Universitaly. Universities may set earlier dates for each course. Consulates in India say processing can take up to 90 days, so we aim to file well before the deadline.

When do DSU scholarship applications open for the 2027/28 intake?
DSU calls for 2027/28 have not been published yet. Going by 2026/27, regional calls opened between June and late July 2026 and closed between 22 July (Lazio DiSCo) and 30 September 2026 (University of Padua). The region, not the university, decides the grant, and each call sets its own documents and dates.

Do bachelor's and master's programmes have different deadlines?
Often, yes. At the University of Turin, the 2026/27 master's window ran from 25 November 2025 to 29 January 2026, while bachelor's and single-cycle programmes took applications from 19 February to 15 April 2026. Politecnico di Milano sets master's rounds by school, and medicine in English follows the IMAT calendar.
Bachelor's programmes with an entry test tie the application to test sessions. Politecnico di Torino, for example, asked non-EU bachelor's applicants living abroad to meet the English requirement by 22 May 2026 and pre-enrol on Universitaly by 30 June 2026.

Can I still join the 2026/27 intake?
For most students applying from India, no. Rounds for visa applicants closed in spring 2026 at most universities, and Ca' Foscari and Sapienza say so on their portals. The latest Universitaly pre-enrolment deadline we found is the University of Pisa's, 30 September 2026, and visa applications close on 30 November 2026.
Late arrival is not a new intake either. Milano-Bicocca lets admitted visa applicants arrive until 31 January 2027, but only after the autumn rounds. The realistic target is 2027/28, and its first calls are open now.

Reality check
The university decides admission, the number of places and which rounds are open to visa applicants. The region decides the DSU scholarship. The consulate decides the visa and the appointment date; admission and pre-enrolment do not secure either.
We handle the work in between: applications in the right round, Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU application and the visa file, with appointment booking, interview preparation and guidance on housing, the residence permit and arrival. We never promise admission, a scholarship or a visa.
The usual pitfalls, and what each costs:
- Waiting for the last round. Late rounds are often for EU and resident students only. Cost: the intake, and a year of waiting.
- Starting documents late. HED attestation, the apostille and the DOV or CIMEA statement take weeks to months; CIMEA's standard service takes 60 working days. Cost: a missed Universitaly or visa date.
- Choosing the wrong programme on Universitaly. Universitaly covers one university and one programme, and Pisa does not let you enrol in a different one. Cost: starting pre-enrolment again, if the portal is still open.
- Leaving DSU until after the visa. The 2026/27 calls closed between 22 July and 30 September 2026. Cost: a year without the grant.
- Planning a February start where there is none. Cost: six months lost, then the next autumn intake.

Which intake is best for Italy?
The September or October intake, because almost every programme admits new students then and the regional DSU calls run in the summer before it. Within that intake, the first or second round is best: more programmes are open to visa applicants, and results arrive in time for documents, pre-enrolment and the visa.
Can I apply to more than one Italian university?
Yes, you can apply in several universities' own rounds, within each one's limits; Sapienza, for example, allows two applications a year. Is the September intake in Italy different from the October intake?
No, it is the same intake. Each university chooses its start date: Tor Vergata's Master in Economics began on 31 August 2026, Federico II's electrical engineering bachelor's in early September 2026, and Padua's courses start at the end of September or early October.
