How tuition works at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
At the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the yearly contribution depends on family income, measured by the ISEE, and study can be tuition-free for eligible students who win a DSU scholarship.
Tuition follows family income (ISEE), and an ISEE up to €30,000 falls in the no-tax area. Families with income abroad can file their foreign documents or choose the flat tax set for their country, and students eligible for the ER.GO scholarship are exempt from tuition.
Some courses cost more at the top band, such as Digital Marketing. Students eligible for the ER.GO scholarship are fully exempt from the contribution. The reduction request goes through ER.GO by 6 November 2026, or 22 December 2026 for first-year master's students (Bando benefici 2026/27).
Source: Extract from the Board of Directors' Resolution of 14 May 2026 (fees 2026/2027) and the 2026/27 Country ISEE table (Annex 6). Rupees use the FBIL reference rate of 21 September 2026, €1 = ₹109.90.
Non-EU families with income or assets abroad can choose the flat tax, set from their country's World Bank GDP per head at purchasing power parity, instead of filing translated and legalised documents. They can always opt out and file the full foreign documents through ER.GO, and the normal ISEE rules then apply. Source: Unimore, flat tax for non-EU international students.
Worked example: With full foreign documents that give an ISEE-equivalent of €15,000, a first-year student from India falls inside the no-tax area in 2026/27. The flat tax needs no documents but costs more, so the document route is cheaper when the family can file it in time. We work out the cheaper route, prepare the translated and legalised documents with you and prepare the ER.GO scholarship application with you at the same time.

Reality check
- Places are set call by call. For 2026/27 the calls for non-EU visa applicants offered 10 places in Digital Automation Engineering, 21 in Advanced Automotive Engineering and 30 in Artificial Intelligence Engineering.
- Deadlines come early. The 2026/27 calls closed between 1 March and 30 April 2026, seven months or more before the study visa deadline of 30 November 2026.
- Documents decide the fee. The flat tax for India needs no documents, while full foreign documents through ER.GO can bring the fee down to the no-tax area.
- Italian still matters. Degrees that require Italian ask for B2, by Unimore's test or a certificate, and daily life in Modena and Reggio Emilia needs it too.
What we handle: the shortlist, the fee route, the income documents, the programme applications, the Universitaly pre-enrolment, the visa file and the DSU application, prepared with you. The university decides admission, the region decides the DSU scholarship and the consulate decides the visa.
