In short
- What you can study: for a BTech in Italy, our catalogue lists 11 English-taught engineering and technology bachelor's for 2027/28 at 9 public universities. Each is a laurea: three years and 180 ECTS.
- Which tests: only Pavia's Artificial Intelligence requires SAT from non-EU applicants living outside Italy. Politecnico di Milano and Sapienza accept SAT or CEnT-S, Padua and Federico II use CEnT-S, and three programmes have no selective test.
- What it costs: an engineering bachelor's at a public university can be tuition-free for eligible students through the regional DSU grant. Otherwise, in 2026/27 a family with income in India paid from €390 a year at Pavia to €3,943.04 at Politecnico di Milano. That is about ₹42,600 to ₹4.31 lakh at the ECB rate of 25 September 2026 (€1 = ₹109.2605).
- Three years, then a master's: a laurea opens a two-year laurea magistrale (120 ECTS), so a master's takes five years in all. A four-year BTech followed by the same master's takes six.
- ApplyAZ, an independent study-in-Italy consultancy with offices in Milan and India, works only with Italian public universities and takes no commission from them. For eligible students, we handle the applications, Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU scholarship application and the visa file.

Tests as each university published them for 2026/27 or 2027/28; the sources are listed at the end. Counts come from our catalogue, where English-taught means English is the only language of teaching.
Two more options sit just outside this list. Biotech Engineering for Health at Siena is filed under health sciences in our catalogue, so it is not in the 11.
Politecnico di Torino, ranked =53 for engineering and technology in the table below, is not in our catalogue for bachelor's yet. Its 2026/27 rule for applicants with a non-Italian qualification was its own TIL test or a SAT score.
Comparing engineering with business or sciences? Our guide to bachelor's degrees in Italy covers all 43 English-taught bachelor's in the catalogue.
Which English-taught engineering bachelor's need TOLC-I or SAT?
Only Pavia's Artificial Intelligence requires SAT: at least 979 out of 1600 for non-EU applicants living outside Italy, in its 2026/27 call. Politecnico di Milano and Sapienza accept SAT or CEnT-S. TOLC-I appears at Politecnico di Bari and Cassino, while Padua and Federico II ask for CEnT-S alone.
Politecnico di Milano also accepts its own TOL and TOLC-I, but both are delivered in Italian. Its rules only let candidates sit a test in a language they understand. For its English-taught degrees, most students applying from India therefore choose CEnT-S or SAT.
| University | Test for non-EU applicants living abroad | Does it rank you? | Rules we checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Politecnico di Milano (3 programmes) | TOL or TOLC-I (in Italian), CEnT-S or SAT (in English). From 2027/28, separate rankings for English-taught courses | Yes, a ranking | Admissions 2026/27; SAT page (2027/28 details due January 2027) |
| University of Padua | CEnT-S | Yes, a ranking for 100 non-EU places | Course page 2027/28 |
| University of Pavia | SAT, at least 979/1600. CEnT-S or English TOLC-I apply only to EU applicants and residents of Italy | Yes, 45 places plus 5 Marco Polo | Admission notice 2026/27 |
| Sapienza University of Rome | CEnT-S or SAT, plus a pre-selection for non-EU citizens living abroad | It checks knowledge; gaps become extra first-year work (OFA) | Call 2026/27 |
| University of Naples Federico II | CEnT-S, minimum 9 out of 45 (biology not counted) | Yes, a minimum score | Programme site (2025/26 test structure) |
| Politecnico di Bari | TOLC-I or CEnT | A pass is required | Programme page |
| University of Cassino and Southern Lazio | TOLC-I to assess your starting level | No, open admission | Programme page |
| University of Messina | CISIA test or equivalent; extra first-year work (OFA) if not passed | No, open access | Requirements page |
| University of Palermo | No entry test | No, open access (accesso libero) | Study plan 2026/27 |
Across the 11 programmes, 5 accept or require SAT, 7 accept CEnT-S (or CEnT), 5 use TOLC-I and 3 have no selective test. None of the admission pages we read mentions JEE.
What is CEnT-S, and has it replaced English TOLC-I?
Yes: CISIA, the consortium behind most Italian university entry tests, replaced English TOLC-I, TOLC-E and TOLC-F with one test, CEnT-S, from November 2025. CEnT-S serves engineering, economics, pharmacy and other sciences. You can sit it at home (CEnT@HOME) or at a university, once in each testing period.
TOLC-I still exists in Italian for Italian-taught courses. So an older page saying an English-taught engineering degree needs "English TOLC-I" now means CEnT-S. Federico II describes the 2025/26 CEnT-S as 55 questions in mathematics, reasoning on texts and data, biology, chemistry and physics, and does not count biology for engineering.
Because each period allows one attempt, the order matters. We plan which test you sit, and when, so that one weak attempt does not push you past a call.
Is an Italian engineering bachelor's the same as a BTech?
Not quite: an Italian engineering laurea lasts three years and carries 180 ECTS, according to Eurydice, while an Indian BTech runs four years after Class XII. Both are first degrees in engineering. The Italian system is built as three years plus a two-year laurea magistrale of 120 ECTS.
| Degree | Length | Credits | What it leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laurea in engineering (Italy) | 3 years after 12 years of school | 180 ECTS | A laurea magistrale in Italy; Padua says its Information Engineering degree opens ICT master's "in Italy and abroad" |
| Laurea magistrale (Italy) | 2 years after the laurea | 120 ECTS | Professional roles and a PhD |
| BTech (India) | 4 years after Class XII | Not expressed in ECTS | Politecnico di Milano accepts it for its laurea magistrale, with at least 70 out of 100 |
| Italian route to a master's | 3 + 2 = 5 years | 300 ECTS | The same laurea magistrale a BTech graduate applies to, one year sooner than BTech plus master's |
The Italian degree name is laurea, not BTech. Each programme belongs to a national degree class, such as L-8 for information engineering or L-9 for industrial engineering.
Does a three-year Italian degree let you do a master's later?
Yes: Eurydice states that a laurea is the entry qualification for a two-year laurea magistrale in Italy. Padua says its Information Engineering bachelor's gives access to every ICT master's "in Italy and abroad", and Politecnico di Milano says Engineering Science leads to its English-taught MSc programmes. The master's university still decides each admission.
The comparison with a four-year BTech matters at the top schools. Politecnico di Milano asks applicants with an Indian degree for at least a four-year bachelor's, such as a BTech, with 70 out of 100. A three-year BSc may be considered only if it is an Honours degree, while Polimi's own laurea is the standard first cycle for the same MSc.
India is a separate question: since 2025, the University Grants Commission grants equivalence for foreign degrees under its Equivalence Regulations, which cover engineering. Its portal says decisions typically take 15 working days.
If you may return for an MTech or a government job, we walk you through this before you choose. We never promise how an Indian body will rate a degree.
Already hold, or finishing, a four-year BTech? Your route is a master's, not a second bachelor's: see MS in Italy for engineering and technology.
Can you start a BTech in Italy after Class XII?
Yes: the MUR circular for 2026/27 and 2027/28 asks for a final school certificate after at least 12 years of schooling, which Class XII meets. Engineering programmes then add their own test or knowledge check, and most English-taught ones ask for English at B2. The university decides whether your subjects and marks fit its call.
Federico II, for example, expects a sound grounding in mathematics and sciences. Students below 8 out of 15 in CEnT-S mathematics, or below 23 out of 45 overall, must first earn 6 maths credits (an OFA) before other exams. Politecnico di Milano accepts English-medium schooling as proof of English, alongside certificates.
Our guide to studying in Italy after 12th covers boards, subjects and every bachelor's open to Class XII students. For English proof without a certificate, see studying in Italy without IELTS.
How much does a BTech in Italy cost?
For 2026/27, a family with income in India paid from €390 a year at Pavia to €3,943.04 at Politecnico di Milano (about ₹42,600 to ₹4.31 lakh). Each fee regulation sets the amount by family income, and the Polimi figure applies without an ISEEU parificato. With the DSU grant, a bachelor's can be tuition-free for eligible students.
| University | 2026/27 fee, family income in India | In INR | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Pavia | €390 a year, flat rate for citizens of India (science area), in four instalments | about ₹42,600 | Citizenship bracket; no financial documents needed. Flat rate 2026/27 |
| Sapienza University of Rome | €300 contribution (2025/26); the 2026/27 table is due after 30 September 2026 | about ₹32,800 | Country band (India is in band A); regional tax and stamp duty on top. Fee amounts |
| University of Padua | €3,198: fixed fee €2,990, regional fee €192, stamp duty €16 | about ₹3.49 lakh | Fixed for non-EU students whose household lives abroad. Fee call 2026/27 |
| Politecnico di Milano | €3,943.04 without an ISEEU parificato (€3,726 contribution, €190 regional tax, €16 stamp duty, €11.04 insurance); with one, the contribution starts at €723 | about ₹4.31 lakh; from about ₹79,000 plus taxes | Band set by an ISEEU parificato from a CAF chosen by Polimi. Fee regulation 2026/27 |
| Federico II, Politecnico di Bari, Cassino, Messina, Palermo | Set by each university's 2026/27 fee rules and family income | Worked out for your family | We calculate your figure before you apply |
Rent and daily costs depend on the campus city. Our cost of studying in Italy page sets out a yearly budget in EUR and INR.

Can an engineering student get the DSU scholarship in Italy?
Yes, if the family's income and assets fall under the regional limits. For 2026/27, the University of Padua required an ISEE below €26,306.25 and an ISPE below €43,125.94 (about ₹28.74 lakh and ₹47.12 lakh), with applications by 30 September 2026. The regional body decides every award, and limits differ by region.
| University | DSU body | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Politecnico di Milano | Politecnico di Milano | Politecnico di Milano scholarship |
| University of Padua | University of Padua | Padua regional scholarship |
| Sapienza, Cassino | DiSCo Lazio | DiSCo Lazio scholarship |
| University of Naples Federico II | ADISURC Campania | DSU grant in Campania |
| Politecnico di Bari | ADISU Puglia | ADISU Puglia scholarship |
| University of Palermo | ERSU Palermo | ERSU Palermo scholarship |
| Pavia, Messina | Their regional bodies | DSU scholarship guide |
One rule catches families out. At Politecnico di Milano, an ISEEU parificato places you in a fee band, but the 2026/27 regulation says it does not by itself give a fee exemption. We handle the DSU application and the ISEE parificato steps, and we tell you exactly which family documents to get.

What do engineering graduates earn in Italy?
More than most graduates. AlmaLaurea's 2026 report found 89.0% of first-cycle industrial and information engineering graduates employed one year after graduating, on €1,694 net a month (about ₹1.85 lakh). Across all first-cycle graduates, the figures were 81.2% and €1,491 (about ₹1.63 lakh).
Those engineering figures, from the 2025 survey, count only graduates who did not enrol in another degree. Engineers who add a laurea magistrale did better again: 93.6% employed at one year on €1,787 net (about ₹1.95 lakh). At five years, 97.5% were employed on €2,185 (about ₹2.39 lakh).
While you study, the study permit lets you work up to 20 hours a week, within 1,040 hours a year. After an Italian bachelor's, you can convert it into a permit to look for work or start a business, lasting 9 to 12 months, for work in line with your studies (Ministry of Labour integration portal).

How do applications and the visa work for a BTech in Italy?
Over about a year: the university admits you, pre-enrolment goes through Universitaly, and the consulate decides the visa. The MUR circular sets the 2027/28 visa deadline at 31 October 2027, with funds of €10,179.85 a year (about ₹11.12 lakh). We handle each step for eligible students.
| When | What happens | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|
| From 1 October 2026 | Politecnico di Milano's alternative-test service reopens after its September pause; SAT and CEnT-S sittings are planned around each call | We plan your test dates |
| January 2027 | Politecnico di Milano publishes its 2027/28 rules, with separate rankings for English-taught courses | We match your SAT or CEnT-S to its phases |
| 7 January to 7 March 2027 | Padua's non-EU call for Information Engineering | We prepare and submit the application |
| Spring 2027 | Other calls open. In 2026/27, Pavia's non-EU SAT registration ran from 28 April to 18 May, and Federico II's pre-admission closed on 31 May | We track each call and apply |
| After admission | Universitaly pre-enrolment, validated by the university; school documents attested and apostilled | We handle pre-enrolment. Your family gets the documents: we tell you exactly which to get, in which order, and check every page before the visa appointment |
| By 31 October 2027 | Visa application, with funds of €10,179.85 a year | We build the visa file; the consulate decides |
| Autumn 2027 | Classes start (Padua: 1 October 2027) | We brief you before you travel |

Reality check
The university decides admission, ranks applicants and sets the places: 100 for non-EU applicants at Padua's Information Engineering, 45 plus 5 at Pavia's Artificial Intelligence. The region decides the DSU grant. The consulate decides the visa.
We handle the work around those decisions: choosing programmes, planning tests, the applications, Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU application and the visa file. We never promise an outcome.
The usual pitfalls, and what each costs:
- Registering a SAT score late. Under Politecnico di Milano's 2026/27 rule, an alternative test not registered by the deadline cannot be used. That can cost a full year.
- Wasting a CEnT-S attempt. CISIA allows one sitting per testing period, so a rushed attempt can push your next score past a call's deadline.
- Missing the campus. Sapienza's building engineering is taught in Rieti, Politecnico di Milano's process engineering in Cremona and its industrial engineering in Piacenza. Rent and daily life follow the campus.
- Skipping the ISEEU parificato at Politecnico di Milano. Without it, the 2026/27 fee is €3,943.04 (₹4.31 lakh); with one, the contribution can start at €723 (about ₹79,000) plus taxes.
- Arriving without English proof. Most programmes ask for English at B2, the level the consulate checks for the visa (MUR circular, Part II, p. 18), and Politecnico di Milano wants proof before enrolment.
- Assuming a laurea equals a BTech back home. Equivalence in India is granted by the University Grants Commission, so plan for it if you may study or work in India later.

Frequently asked questions
Is a BTech in Italy taught in English?
Yes, at 11 programmes in our catalogue for 2027/28, across 9 public universities, from information engineering in Padua to artificial intelligence in Pavia. Each one lasts three years and carries 180 ECTS. For an English-taught course, most programmes ask for English at B2, and we match your proof to what each one accepts before you apply.
Do I need JEE for a BTech in Italy?
No: none of the admission pages we read for the 11 English-taught programmes mentions JEE. They use SAT, CEnT-S or TOLC-I, or a knowledge check that does not rank you, and Palermo has open access. What counts is your school certificate after 12 years, your English proof and the test the programme names.
What SAT score do Italian universities ask for engineering?
It depends on the programme: Pavia's Artificial Intelligence asked non-EU applicants living outside Italy for at least 979 out of 1600 in 2026/27. Politecnico di Milano converts SAT scores to its own 100-point scale, and its 2026/27 early phase asked for at least 620 in each section. We set your target score against each call.
Is IELTS required for a BTech in Italy?
Not always: most programmes ask for English at B2, the level the consulate checks for the visa, and each university chooses the proof it accepts. Politecnico di Milano, for example, also accepts a school qualification obtained in English. We work out which proof each programme on your list accepts, so you only take a test if you need one.
Can I study a BTech in Italy without paying tuition?
A public engineering bachelor's can be tuition-free for eligible students, mainly through the regional DSU scholarship, which looks at family income and assets. Without it, 2026/27 fees for a family with income in India ran from €390 at Pavia to €3,943.04 at Politecnico di Milano (about ₹42,600 to ₹4.31 lakh). The region decides every award.
Is an Italian engineering bachelor's valid in India?
An Italian laurea is Italy's official first-cycle degree, and in India the equivalence of a foreign degree is granted by the University Grants Commission under its 2025 Equivalence Regulations. A three-year laurea is shorter than a four-year BTech, which matters most if you plan an MTech or a government job in India. We explain this before you choose.
How long is a BTech in Italy?
Three years. Every engineering bachelor's in our table is a laurea of 180 ECTS, which Eurydice describes as the standard length of an Italian bachelor's. You can then add a two-year laurea magistrale of 120 ECTS, so a master's takes five years in total, one year less than a four-year BTech followed by a master's.
When should I start preparing for the 2027/28 intake?
Start now: Padua's non-EU call for Information Engineering runs from 7 January to 7 March 2027, and Politecnico di Milano publishes its 2027/28 rules in January 2027. Your SAT or CEnT-S sitting has to fit before each call, and visa applications close on 31 October 2027. We plan every date with you from the first consultation.
