Biotech Engineering for Health is a three-year, 180 ECTS bachelor's degree taught entirely in English at the University of Siena, combining biotechnology (class L-2) and information engineering (class L-8). Entry is limited, with a CEnT-S test and, for non-EU applicants, an online interview. The programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A secondary school diploma valid for university entry in Italy.
- English at B2 level (CEFR), unless you are from an English-speaking country or pass the University Language Centre interview.
- The CISIA CEnT-S test (mathematics, reasoning, physics, biology and chemistry), with a minimum score of 8, taken at home or at a CISIA centre.
- Non-EU applicants also need at least 15/30 in an online interview on motivation and STEM aptitude.
- Limited places: for 2026/27, 30 places for non-EU applicants out of 80.
About the programme
Biotech Engineering for Health is a three-year bachelor's degree worth 180 ECTS and delivered entirely in English. It is an interclass degree, joining class L-2 (biotechnology) and class L-8 (information engineering), and is run by the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics at San Niccolò, via Roma 56, in Siena.
The programme combines biotechnology and information engineering to train professionals for health and wellbeing. It suits school leavers who enjoy both biology and mathematics and want to work where life sciences meet data, electronics and devices.
What you will study
The first year lays foundations in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science, plus management. Later years add specialised biotech and engineering courses. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:
- Calculus, Algebra and Geometry, and Physics
- Biological and Morphological Basis of Life, and Chemistry
- Fundamentals of Computer Science
- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Physiology and Pathology
- Artificial Intelligence for Biomedical Data
- Signal Analysis and Statistical Models, and Control Systems and Robotics
- Electronics, and Microbiology and Regenerative Medicine
- Drugs and Therapeutic Proteins
Third-year electives include Sensors and Biosensors, Electromagnetics and Imaging for Biomedicine, and Biomolecules, Biomaterials and Smart Systems.
How the programme is taught
The degree ends with a traineeship, which can be done at companies, research centres or within the university, and a final project that draws together what students have learned.
Career paths
Graduates can take technical roles as engineers or biotechnologists in:
- information and communication technologies
- biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
- biomedical engineering
- public and private research centres
They can also start businesses in the health sector, register as junior engineer or junior biologist after the Italian state exam, or continue to a master's degree.
Fees and scholarships
Siena calculates fees from the Italian ISEE and does not accept an ISEE parificato. Under the 2026/27 rules, students with no valid ISEE pay the top rate scaled by a country coefficient, with a €500 floor, so students from countries like India pay €500 a year plus regional tax and stamp duty. DSU Toscana winners and eligible students are exempt, and the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
This degree has its own call. For 2026/27, non-EU applicants needing a visa applied on apply.unisi.it by 30 April 2026, paying €49.90, after sitting the CEnT-S. Candidates were invited to an online interview in order of test score, and results came out in May.
Admitted students must start the Universitaly visa procedure within 14 days of the offer. The 2027/28 call is not published yet.
How ApplyAZ helps
If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
