The Bachelor in Sustainable Building Engineering is a three-year, 180 ECTS degree (class L-23) taught in English by Sapienza University of Rome at its Rieti campus. It updates civil engineering skills for sustainable buildings and territory. Entry needs the SAT or CEnT-S, and students with income abroad pay a flat fee by country, from €300 a year (2025/26).
Entry requirements
- A secondary school diploma after 12 years of schooling, or 11 years plus at least one year of technical university study.
- The SAT (taken from 1 January 2023) or the CEnT-S (taken from November 2025), sat by the deadline of the call.
- A GPA of at least 80/100 for MoveIn pre-selection.
- English at B2 level of the CEFR, for example IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80, Cambridge B2 First or Trinity ISE II; the English TOLC is no longer accepted.
- For visa applicants, a MoveIn pre-acceptance letter (€30) and Universitaly pre-enrolment, plus the €10 Infostud fee.
About the programme
Sustainable Building Engineering (Ingegneria per l'Edilizia Sostenibile) is a three-year bachelor's degree in class L-23, building engineering, worth 180 ECTS and taught in English. It is run by the Department of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, and classes take place in person at Sapienza's Rieti campus, Palazzo Aluffi, Via Cintia 106.
The degree aims to give students the knowledge and skills to secure a sustainable future for existing and new buildings, updating traditional civil engineering with a focus on sustainable development. Access is through an entrance test that checks your preparation. It suits school leavers with a good mathematics background who are interested in buildings, cities and the environment.
What you will study
Students learn to design, plan and manage solutions for the territory and the built environment under sustainability principles: lower energy demand, passive design and sustainable architecture, recovery and reuse of building materials, longer building lifetimes, sustainable land use, less urban sprawl and urban renewal. Course units taught in 2026/27 include:

How the programme is taught
All teaching is in person in Rieti; in 2026/27 first-semester lessons began on 28 September. New students draw up their study plan on Infostud (for 2026/27, from 15 September 2026 to 31 January 2027). Students whose test score is below the threshold must pass additional mathematics requirements (OFA) within the first year.
Career paths
The university frames the degree around the design, planning and management of sustainable solutions for buildings and the territory, updating traditional civil engineering skills. Those are the areas graduates prepare to work in, from building design and site management to environmental protection and urban renewal. Sapienza also teaches an English master's degree at the same campus, Environmental and Sustainable Building Engineering, for students who want to continue.
Fees and scholarships
For students with income abroad, Sapienza replaces the ISEE-based fee with a flat yearly amount by country band. The latest rules published (2025/26) set €300 for Band A, which includes countries like India, Nigeria and Pakistan, €700 for Band B and €1,500 for Band C, paid in three instalments; the 2026/27 rules are due after 30 September 2026. DiSCo Lazio grant winners, and students meeting its requirements, pay €30.
How to apply from outside the EU
The degree has its own call. Non-EU applicants living abroad register for pre-selection on MoveIn (€30, two applications at most); for 2026/27 the deadline was 15 May 2026, followed by Universitaly pre-enrolment by 30 June 2026. You then pay the €10 fee on Infostud (2 July to 29 October 2026 that year) and submit a SAT or CEnT-S score.
A CEnT-S score below 18 or a SAT below 800/1600 brings a first-year mathematics requirement (OFA). The consulate then handles the type D study visa.
