Check your eligibilityThe figure
The figure comes from the Ministry of University and Research circular on international students for 2026/27 and 2027/28. The study visa checklists of the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi and the Consulates General in Mumbai and Bengaluru state the same minimum, 10,179.85 EUR. The rupee amount is a reference conversion; the rule itself is set in euros.

How each Indian office checks the funds
All three Indian offices use the same minimum and similar wording in the funds item of their 2026/27 study visa checklists. The differences are in the detail: where the branch stamp must appear, what a sponsor adds and where the name rule sits. Each office name links to its full visa and DOV (declaration of value) page.
| Office | What the checklist asks for as proof | Sponsor and loan rules |
|---|---|---|
| Embassy of Italy, New Delhi | At least 10,179.85 EUR (item 5). 6 months of original statements stamped and signed by the branch manager; income proof such as 2 years of tax returns. | Sponsor in India: relative up to the 4th degree; adds statements, ID, a sponsorship letter and income proof. Loan counts if deposited and visible. |
| Consulate General of Italy, Mumbai | At least 10,179.85 EUR (item 5). 6 months of original statements stamped and signed by the branch manager; income proof such as 2 years of tax returns. | Sponsor in India: relative up to the 4th degree. Loan counts if deposited and visible. Name mismatch (student or sponsor): one and the same certificate. |
| Consulate General of Italy, Bengaluru | At least 10,179.85 EUR (item 8). Original 6-month statement stamped and signed by the branch manager on all pages; income proof such as 2 years of tax returns. | Sponsor in India: relative up to the 4th degree; statement stamped on all pages, last 6 salary slips. Loan counts if deposited and visible. |

Check your eligibilityHow the funds part of the visa file comes together
The funds item is one part of the visa file, but it touches several others: the enrolment fee payment, the flight booking and the covering letter. This is how it comes together, from the first look at the family's accounts to the appointment, and what we prepare and check for eligible students.
- Figure and deadline. The file has to show at least 10,179.85 EUR for the year. Bachelor and Master visa applications for 2026/27 are not accepted after 30 Nov 2026 (31 Oct 2027 for 2027/28), and processing takes up to 90 days. For eligible students, we plan the funds proof backwards from those dates.
- Whose money. The circular requires funds from lawful and traceable sources, preferably the student's own or else the household's, and prefers current or escrow accounts in the student's name where permitted. A sponsor living in India must be a relative up to the 4th degree. We map the family's accounts against these rules before any statement is issued.
- Bank statements. The bank issues 6 months of original statements, stamped and signed by the branch manager (on all pages in Bengaluru), for the student and for any sponsor. The same statements have to show the payment of the university enrolment fee and, for a type D visa (long-stay national visa), money for the flight on top of the minimum. We check the balance, the stamps, the signatures and those payments.
- Income proof. The checklists ask for documents on employment or business activity, ITR (income tax returns) for the last 2 years, or a family income certificate from an official state government portal. An education loan counts only if it is deposited and visible on the statements. We check that the income explains the balances, because the offices assess consistency with the family's income.
- Sponsor documents and names. A sponsor adds ID proof, a sponsorship letter and income proof; Bengaluru also asks for the last 6 salary slips. If the student's or the sponsor's name differs between the passport and another document, the file needs a one and the same certificate, attested and apostilled (the apostille is the Ministry of External Affairs certification). We prepare the sponsorship letter for the sponsor to sign and compare every name.
- Covering letter. The checklists recommend a statement of purpose of one page at most that explains, among other things, how the studies are funded and any scholarship. We draft it with the student so it matches the statements and the income proof.
- Appointment. The student books the visa appointment in their own name (New Delhi and Bengaluru require the student's own email ID and contact number) and attends VFS in person. The Embassy or Consulate decides whether the funds are sufficient and whether the visa is issued. We prepare the whole file, check it against that office's checklist and get the student ready for the appointment.
Is 10,179.85 EUR per year or for the whole course?
Per year. The Ministry of University and Research circular for 2026/27 and 2027/28 quantifies the resources at 10,179.85 EUR per year, and the three Indian offices' checklists ask for proof of at least that amount. The circular also requires the funds to fit a wider assessment of the family's or sponsor's background, so that they stay available for continuing studies.
The checklists themselves state the figure without a period; the period comes from the circular. For eligible students, we read the balance and the family's income together, so the file tells one consistent story.
Can parents or relatives show the funds for an Italy student visa?
Yes. For a sponsor living in India, the three checklists accept relatives up to the 4th degree of kinship. The sponsor adds 6 months of original bank statements alongside the student's own, ID proof, a sponsorship letter and proof of income such as 2 years of ITR. The circular prefers the student's own funds, or else the household's.
Italian or foreign nationals legally living in Italy, institutions, Italian universities, local government bodies and foreign authorities recognised by the Italian Government can also sponsor with verifiable documents. For eligible students, we check the kinship and every sponsor document before the file is complete.
Does an education loan count towards the funds?
Yes, with a condition. All three checklists accept an education loan as part of the financial means only if the amount is deposited and visible on the bank statements submitted by the applicant. Otherwise its relevance is evaluated case by case, so a loan that is sanctioned but not yet disbursed falls into that case-by-case category.
For eligible students, we check that the disbursement shows on the statements before the file is complete, and that the loan fits the rest of the income proof.
Does a DSU scholarship count as proof of funds?
Only with an explicit scholarship certificate. The circular says that without one, merely applying for a DSU scholarship (the regional right-to-study grant), or meeting its eligibility requirements, cannot be taken into account for the visa. The checklists accept an Italian Government scholarship in original, topped up by other means if it is below the minimum.
How the regional grant works in 2026/27: DSU scholarship in Italy 2026/27. For eligible students, we prepare the DSU application and the visa file together, so the funds proof rests on documents that exist on the day of the appointment.
Is it enough to have the money in the account on the day?
No. The circular says the funds must come from lawful and traceable sources, and the Italian offices ascertain their origin, including by assessing account movements and consistency with the family's income and assets. The checklists match this: they ask for 6 months of statements and 2 years of income proof, not a single balance on one date.
A large deposit shortly before the application is an account movement like any other: it needs a traceable source that fits the family's income. We review the 6 months of movements with the family before the statements are issued.

Reality check
What we handle: for eligible students, we map the family's accounts and income against the circular and the office checklist, check every statement, stamp, signature and name, prepare the sponsorship letter and the covering letter, and get the student ready for the appointment. The student books the appointment in their own name and attends VFS in person.
What we do not control: the Embassy or Consulate decides the visa, including whether the funds are sufficient and their origin traceable, and processing takes up to 90 days. The university decides admission, and the region decides the DSU scholarship.
What costs students the most:
- Funds that appear in one lump shortly before the application: the offices assess account movements and consistency with the family's income, so a balance the income does not explain puts the visa at risk.
- A sponsor outside the 4th degree of kinship: a sponsor living in India must be a relative up to the 4th degree, so those funds cannot carry the file and it has to be rebuilt around other statements.
- Paperwork that fails on form: statements without the branch manager's stamp and signature go back to the bank, and a name written differently across sponsor documents needs a one and the same certificate, attested and apostilled. Each costs time against the 30 Nov 2026 deadline.

Check your eligibilityFrequently asked questions
Can the funds be held in a fixed deposit?
Neither the three Indian checklists nor the ministry circular mention fixed deposits by name. The checklists ask for 6 months of original bank statements stamped and signed by the branch manager, and the circular prefers, where permitted, current or escrow accounts in the student's name. For eligible students, we look at how each family account will read on the statements before they are issued.
Do the bank statements have to be in euros?
The checklists set the minimum in euros, 10,179.85 EUR, and do not say which currency the statements must be in. At the FBIL reference rate of 18 Sep 2026 the minimum is about INR 11,19,666, but rates move. We check the balance against the euro figure at the current rate, with room for the flight money the checklists also ask for.
Is money for the flight needed on top of the minimum?
Yes, for a type D (long-stay national) visa. All three checklists ask for a confirmed one-way flight reservation, with the PNR verified, and sufficient funds on top of the minimum proof of financial support. They put no figure on the extra amount, so we check that the statements show a margin above 10,179.85 EUR.
What if a scholarship covers only part of the amount?
The checklists accept proof of an Italian Government scholarship in original. Where it is below the minimum set by law, the rest can be shown through the other means they list: the student's statements and income proof, or a sponsor's. For a DSU scholarship, the circular also requires an explicit scholarship certificate before it counts at all.
What counts as proof of income for the funds?
The checklists list documents on employment or business activity, income tax returns for the last 2 years, a family income certificate downloaded from an official state government portal, and an education loan. A sponsor provides the same kind of proof, and Bengaluru also asks for the sponsor's last 6 salary slips.
Can ApplyAZ prepare the funds part of my visa file for me?
Yes, for eligible students. We check the family's accounts, statements, stamps, income proof and names against the circular and the office checklist, and prepare the sponsorship and covering letters. The consulate decides the visa. Check your eligibility first. If you are eligible, you book a one to one consultation with one of our Italy experts, and from there we take care of everything.
