Updated 6 October 2026. Ranking and payment rules below are taken from each body's official 2026/27 call, checked on 28 September 2026. Dates move, so always confirm in your body's portal.

In short

  • After you apply for the DSU scholarship, the body publishes a provisional ranking, opens a short appeal window, then publishes a definitive ranking. For 2026/27 most first-year rankings fall between late September and December 2026.
  • Being idoneo (eligible) is not the same as being a vincitore (winner): in some calls eligible students are funded only as far as the money goes.
  • The first payment usually arrives between 10 November and 31 December 2026, and only once you are enrolled, have an account in your own name and, for the top rate, have proved you live away from home.
  • The rest of the grant depends on credits: usually 20 by 10 August 2027. Below 20 by 30 November 2027, the grant is revoked and must be repaid.

What happens after you apply for the DSU scholarship?

  1. Document checks. The body or its CAF checks your ISEE parificato and the family documents. Missing originals can leave your file suspended.
  2. Provisional ranking. Published in the body's portal, usually listed by application number or code rather than by name.
  3. Appeal window. Often about a week to correct errors or contest the outcome.
  4. Definitive ranking. Confirms who is eligible and who is funded.
  5. Enrolment confirmation and payment details. Enrolment at the university, an IBAN, and proof of where you live.
  6. First instalment. Usually by 31 December of the first year.
  7. Credits. The exams you pass by 10 August release the second half.

What do idoneo, vincitore and sospeso mean in a DSU ranking?

Idoneo means eligible: your income and documents meet the call. Vincitore or beneficiario means you are eligible and funded, so the grant will be paid. Idoneo non beneficiario means eligible but not yet funded, which happens when a body's money runs out before the end of the ranking; such students often still get the fee exemption and can be funded later if more money arrives.

Escluso means excluded, with the reason shown, and is the status to appeal fast. Some bodies also use a suspended status: ALiSEO Liguria marks a file sospeso until the ISEE parificato arrives, which it needs by 19 October 2026 to avoid suspension.

When are the 2026/27 DSU rankings published?

These are the ranking dates set in each call. Bodies sometimes publish a few days late, so check your portal on the date.

How do you appeal a DSU ranking?

Each call sets a short window after the provisional ranking. In 2026/27, Politecnico di Milano's ran to 6 October, DSU Toscana's to 10 October and ER.GO's to 27 October 2026. An appeal (ricorso or istanza di revisione) is filed in the body's online portal, with the document that proves the error, for example a missing certificate or a wrong family member count.

Appeal only on facts you can document. A late-arriving original rarely counts as an error, but a document the body received and did not record does. If you are excluded, read the exclusion code first: it tells you which document or rule failed.

When is the first DSU payment made in 2026/27?

Most bodies follow the national pattern for first-years: 20% by 10 November and 30% by 31 December for Bachelor's and single-cycle students, and 50% by 31 December for Master's students. There are important exceptions for students from India.

Scholarship bodyFirst-year payment, 2026/27
EDISU Piemonte20% from mid-Nov and 30% from end of Dec 2026 (9 Nov ranking); 50% from end of Dec for the 16 Dec ranking, incl. all Master's
University of MilanFirst of two equal instalments by 31 Dec 2026, paid only to the Carta La Statale
Politecnico di Milano50% by Dec 2026; needs in-person identification, an issued visa and an Italian or SEPA IBAN
University of PaduaFirst instalment by end of Dec 2026; IBAN in your name by 31 Oct 2026
ALiSEO LiguriaNo cash in 2026: the full net grant is paid after 20 credits by 10 Aug 2027 (bed and meals start earlier)
ER.GO Emilia-RomagnaBachelor's: 20% by 10 Nov and 30% by 31 Dec 2026, then 10% from Mar 2027. Master's: 50% by 31 Dec 2026
DSU ToscanaBachelor's: 20% by 10 Nov and 30% within Dec 2026. Master's: 50% within Dec 2026
ADiSU Umbria25% by 31 Dec 2026; Italian IBAN in your name and an Italian domicile required
ERDIS MarcheNon-EU first-years: first instalment only after the credits, unless the family gives a surety bond or filed an Italian tax return for 2024
DiSCo LazioBachelor's: 20% by 10 Nov and 30% by 27 Dec 2026. Master's: 50% by 27 Dec 2026
ADSU Chieti-PescaraBachelor's: 20% of the cash by 10 Nov and 30% by 31 Dec 2026. Master's: 50% by 31 Dec 2026
ADISURC Campania50% of the cash by 31 Dec 2026 if not suspended and the IBAN is in (advised by 15 Nov)
ADISU PugliaBachelor's: 20% by 10 Nov and 30% by 31 Dec 2026. Master's: 50% by 31 Dec 2026; as funds allow
ERSU Palermo20% by 10 Nov and 30% by 31 Dec 2026, with the first instalment at the commuter rate
ERSU Catania50% by 31 Dec 2026, at the commuter or in sede rate
ERSU CagliariBachelor's: 20% by 10 Nov (at the commuter rate) and 30% by 31 Dec 2026. Master's: 50% by 31 Dec 2026

Three exceptions matter most. ALiSEO Liguria pays no cash in 2026 and pays the full net grant after 20 credits. ERDIS Marche pays non-EU first-years only after the credits, unless the family provides a surety bond or filed an Italian tax return for 2024. ERSU Palermo, ERSU Catania and ERSU Cagliari pay the first instalment at the commuter rate, with the fuori sede difference later. Plan your first months' budget with this in mind.

What do you need before the DSU scholarship is paid?

  • Enrolment. Most bodies check that you are enrolled before the first instalment.
  • A bank account in your own name. ADiSU Umbria needs an Italian IBAN; Politecnico di Milano accepts an Italian or SEPA IBAN; the University of Milan pays only to its Carta La Statale.
  • Proof that you live away from home. A registered lease or a residence bed. The University of Milan asks for lease proof by 16 November 2026, ADiSU Umbria by 6 November, ADSU Chieti-Pescara by 13 November, and ADISU Puglia between 1 and 20 November 2026.
  • The residence permit or its receipt. ERSU Palermo needs it by 30 November 2026; Politecnico di Milano needs your visa issued.
  • A codice fiscale for the account, the lease and the portal.

The first weeks in Italy decide whether these are ready in time. Our first 60 days in Italy checklist covers the permit, the tax code, the bank and the lease in order.

How many credits do you need to keep the DSU scholarship?

The second half of the first-year grant depends on credits (CFU) registered by 10 August 2027; at ALiSEO Liguria the whole cash grant, and at ERDIS Marche the first instalment for non-EU first-years, also wait for the credits. Most bodies ask first-years for 20 credits. Some ask for more: the University of Milan 35 for Bachelor's students, Politecnico di Milano 35 or 40, and ER.GO 25 for Bachelor's or 30 for Master's, plus 9 by 28 February 2027. ERSU Palermo and ERSU Catania ask 15 by 10 August and 20 in total by 30 November 2027.

Every body's rule, the bonus credits some of them allow and what happens if you fall short are in our guide to DSU credits to keep your grant.

What happens if you miss the DSU credit requirement?

There are two dates. Reach the credits by 10 August 2027 and you receive the full grant. Reach them between 11 August and 30 November 2027 and, at DiSCo Lazio, ALiSEO Liguria, ADISURC Campania and ADISU Puglia, you keep half. Fewer than 20 credits by 30 November 2027 means the grant is revoked at almost every body: you repay the cash received and the value of the bed and meals, and fee exemptions linked to the grant can fall away.

The safest plan is to choose first-semester exams you can pass by February and spread the rest across the June and July sessions, so that 20 credits are secure before August.

Can you renew the DSU scholarship for the second year?

Yes, but not automatically. You apply again in the next year's call, usually between June and September, with updated family documents. From the second year the merit rule changes: you need a minimum number of credits by 10 August of the year you reapply, and the number rises each year of the course. Each call prints its own table, so check your body's call as soon as it is published.

Students who keep their credits on track can usually hold the grant for the standard length of their course plus one extra semester, subject to the body's rules.

When do DSU meals and housing start?

Services often start before the cash. DSU Toscana gives meals from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027; ADiSU Umbria from 1 October 2026; Politecnico di Milano's meal vouchers run from 16 November 2026; the University of Milan's free daily meal starts on 1 January 2027. Beds are assigned through the body's housing ranking, and in some regions through a separate housing call.

Which mistakes cost students the grant after they win it?

  • Not uploading the lease or domicile proof by the body's date, which drops the payment to the commuter rate.
  • Giving a parent's or an Indian account as the IBAN.
  • Leaving the residence permit appointment late, when a body needs the receipt to pay.
  • Booking first exams for September, after the 10 August credit date.
  • Not checking the portal: document requests and exclusion notices arrive there, not by email.

Frequently asked questions

When will I get my first DSU scholarship payment?

For most first-years in 2026/27, 20% arrives by 10 November and 30% by 31 December 2026, or 50% by 31 December for Master's students. Some bodies differ: ALiSEO Liguria pays no cash in 2026, and ERDIS Marche pays non-EU first-years after the credits.

What does idoneo non beneficiario mean in DSU?

It means you are eligible for the DSU scholarship but not funded yet, because the body's money ran out before your place in the ranking. You often still get the fee exemption and can be funded later if more money arrives.

How many credits do I need to keep the DSU scholarship?

Most bodies ask first-years for 20 credits by 10 August 2027. The University of Milan asks 35 for Bachelor's students, Politecnico di Milano 35 or 40, and ERSU Palermo and Catania 15 by 10 August plus 20 by 30 November 2027.

What happens if I do not get 20 credits?

If you have fewer than 20 credits by 30 November of your first year, the grant is revoked at almost every body and you must repay the cash and the value of the services. Between 11 August and 30 November, some bodies pay only half.

Do I need an Italian bank account for the DSU scholarship?

Usually an account in your own name. ADiSU Umbria needs an Italian IBAN, Politecnico di Milano accepts an Italian or SEPA IBAN, and the University of Milan pays only to its Carta La Statale.

Is the DSU scholarship renewed automatically?

No. You apply again in each year's call with updated family documents, and from the second year you also need the minimum credits set by your body for your year of course.
