A good IMAT score in 2026 is one that ranks within the places at your university, and on the official 2025 non-EU lists we could read, the last admitted score ran from 50.90 at Bari to 67.60 at Parma (at seat count), out of 90. Most universities publish no list we could read, so we show only official figures.

Good IMAT score: key facts

What is a good IMAT score in 2026?

A good IMAT score in 2026 is one that ranks within the places at your university, and that line is known only when the lists appear. The official 2025 non-EU lists we could read closed between 50.90 at Bari and 67.60 at Parma (at seat count), out of 90, and the 2024 lists between 57.20 and 65.80.

A score is good or not only against one list. In 2025, a score of 60 was above the last admitted score at Bari and Messina, but below it at Catania and Parma. In 2024 the same 60 was above Catania and Parma only.

So the answer has two parts: the university where you compete, and where its list closed in past years. The tables below give the second part from official lists only, and our IMAT cut-off scores by university page links each figure to its list.

How is the IMAT scored, and what does a score out of 90 mean?

Each correct answer earns 1.5 points, each wrong answer loses 0.4 and a blank scores 0, under article 3(4) of Decree 1005. The maximum is 90, which takes 60 correct answers. Different mixes of right and wrong answers can give the same total, so a score says little about how many questions were attempted.

By our arithmetic, Bari's 2025 last admitted score of 50.90 equals 35 right and 4 wrong answers, or 39 right and 19 wrong. Parma's 67.60 (at seat count) equals 48 right and 11 wrong, with 1 blank. Every wrong answer costs 0.4, so the same number of right answers can end up several points apart.

Two minimums apply. The national ranking takes only candidates with at least 20 points, under article 3(2), while non-EU applicants living abroad are ranked with any score above zero, under article 3(3). A paper with no answers is not ranked, and a ranked score is not an admitted one.

What were the lowest IMAT scores admitted by university from 2023 to 2025?

On the official non-EU lists we could read, the last admitted score ran from 50.90 to 67.60 in 2025, 57.20 to 65.80 in 2024 and 36.90 to 50.40 in 2023, out of 90. Those lists come from five universities only. The table groups every university by where its 2025 list closed, or why there is no figure.

Each band shows the lowest and highest last admitted score of the group that year, and names the lists it rests on. Figures come from each first list, except Bari 2025, where we use the corrected list. Bari's 2023 figure sits at rank 8, the number of places its rector's decree opened, and Parma's are read at seat count because its lists mark admitted candidates only by colour.

Among the four universities with lists in both years, the two highest in 2024 became the two lowest in 2025, and the other way round. From highest to lowest, 2024 ran Bari, Messina, Parma and Catania, and 2025 ran Parma, Catania, Messina and Bari. A group is a label for one year, not a fixed tier.

Which score bands did the official non-EU lists close in?

Of the 13 official list-years we could read from 2023 to 2025, none closed at 70 or above, and none between 44 and 50. Eight of the nine 2024 and 2025 lists closed between 57.20 and 67.60 (Parma, at seat count); the ninth was Bari's 50.90 in 2025. Every 2023 list closed at 50.40 or below.

Each cell names the list-year it rests on, with its link. We read the table as a record of where lists closed, not as a forecast: the same band held different universities each year, and 2026 depends on this year's test, places and applicants.

How did scores of 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70 compare with the official lists?

On the official lists we could read, 70 was above every last admitted score from 2023 to 2025, and 50 was below every 2024 and 2025 figure. Scores in between split the lists: 60 was above Bari and Messina in 2025 but below Catania and Parma. The table shows each case.

"Above" means the score was higher than that list's last admitted score that year. Later rounds change no cell: Messina's 57.80 in 2025 and 61.60 in 2024, Marche Polytechnic's 60.10 in 2024 and Parma's 50.10 in 2023 fall on the same side of each score. The answer mixes follow from the scoring rule in article 3(4), and within 60 questions no other mix gives these totals.

Above a list's last admitted score is not the same as admitted. Non-EU applicants living abroad compete only at their pre-enrolment university, and on Messina's 2025 first list the candidate in position 57 had the same 58.20 as the last admitted and was not admitted until round 1.

What IMAT score do students from India need?

There is no fixed score. Students from India who live in India apply as non-EU applicants living abroad: any score above zero is ranked, and admission depends on ranking within the places at their pre-enrolment university. On the official 2025 lists we could read, the last admitted score ran from 50.90 (Bari) to 67.60 (Parma, at seat count).

The 20-point minimum applies to the national ranking, for EU candidates and non-EU candidates legally resident in Italy. For that ranking we found no MUR or university page giving a last admitted score by university, so the bands on this page cover non-EU lists only.

Why do most universities publish no non-EU list we could read?

Each university runs its own non-EU list under article 3(5) of Decree 1005, and the decree says nothing about where it appears or how long it stays online. So 11 of the 16 universities with non-EU places have no official score we could read for 2023 to 2025, holding 313 of the 525 places in Italy.

Two universities, Bologna and Turin, publish results inside each candidate's personal area. Padua and Pavia removed their past lists. At Tor Vergata, Milano-Bicocca (2024) and Naples Federico II (the 2025 closure notice), the file is online but did not open as text for our tools.

At Cagliari the student office site did not load, and at Campania Luigi Vanvitelli the admission pages showed us no documents. We found no list at all for Milan or Sapienza, and we do not borrow figures from other websites to fill these gaps. For these universities we compare places, calls and deadlines instead.

Does a good IMAT score change from year to year?

Yes, sometimes by more than 20 points. Every 2023 last admitted score we could read sat below the same university's 2024 figure: Messina went from 36.90 to 61.80, Bari from 37.60 to 65.80, Marche Polytechnic from 43.00 to 60.30 and Parma from 50.40 to 59.10, both at seat count.

Then 2025 turned the order round. Bari fell from 65.80 to 50.90 and Messina from 61.80 to 58.20, while Catania rose from 57.20 to 61.60 and Parma from 59.10 to 67.60 at seat count.

Places and demand move too. In 2025 Catania ranked 402 applicants for its 60 places, and for 2026/27 Tabella B cuts its places to 40 and Marche Polytechnic's from 60 to 50, while Messina rises from 56 to 61 and Parma from 45 to 50. Past figures cannot tell anyone the 2026 cut-off.

Why can the last admitted score fall during scorrimento?

Scorrimento moves a list down when admitted candidates do not enrol, so each vacant place goes to the next candidate, who scored the same or less. A later round therefore keeps the last admitted score or lowers it, never the reverse. On Messina's 2025 non-EU list, two rounds took it from 58.20 to 57.80.

• Messina 2025/26: 58.20 on the first list, still 58.20 after round 1 (2 more admitted) and 57.80 after round 2 (1 more).
• Messina 2024/25: 61.80 on the first list, 61.60 after round 1.
• Marche Polytechnic 2024/25: 60.30 on the list of 10 October 2024, 60.10 after recoveries on 22 and 30 October.
• Parma 2023/24: 50.40 at seat count on the first list, 50.10 after round 1 on 22 November 2023.
• Marche Polytechnic 2023/24: 43.00 before and after one recovery.

A correction works differently from a round. Bari's corrected 2025 list, issued three days after the first, lifted the last admitted score from 49.30 to 50.90, and the corrected figure is the one we use.

Among the 2026/27 calls we read, Pavia names 3 November 2026 for its vacant places and replacement list, and Parma updates its list when admitted candidates miss their deadline. In the national ranking, a withdrawal moves the list on only while places remain on that course.

How does your score affect your choice of university and preference order?

For non-EU applicants living abroad, the score counts at one university only: the one where they submitted pre-enrolment on Universitaly, under article 2(3) of Decree 1005. For 2026 that choice is already fixed, so past cut-offs matter most when choosing a university for 2027/28.

For EU candidates and non-EU candidates living in Italy, the order of preferences matters instead. Their preferences were locked at 15:00 Italian time on 9 September 2026. Each round then gives the highest preference the score reaches: ASSIGNED there, or BOOKED on a lower one while a better one may still open.

Enrolling where you are booked cancels every other preference automatically. An assigned candidate who misses the enrolment deadline loses the right to that place, whatever the reason.

When we shortlist with a student for 2027/28, we read the official figures in four ways.

• Three years side by side: one year misleads, as Bari's fall from 65.80 in 2024 to 50.90 in 2025 shows.
• Like with like: a first list is compared with other first lists, because later rounds end lower.
• Next year's places: fewer places, as at Catania in 2026/27, mean fewer admissions from a list of the same length.
• Honest gaps: where a university has no list we could read, we weigh its places and its own call, never another website's figure.

The university decides admission. Our part, for eligible students, is to set the official figures, places and deadlines side by side before pre-enrolment, and then to handle every step.

When will the 2026 last admitted scores be published?

The 2026 cut-offs exist only once each university publishes its non-EU list. Anonymous scores come out on Thursday 8 October 2026, and the named national ranking on Monday 26 October, the date Bologna, Padua, Cagliari and Marche Polytechnic give for their non-EU lists. Other universities set their own dates or give none.

• Thu 8 Oct 2026: anonymous scores by label code, in the Universitaly reserved area (Allegato 2, point 4).
• Mon 19 Oct: each candidate's own paper, score and personal data sheet (point 6).
• Mon 26 Oct: the named national ranking (point 7), and the non-EU lists at Bologna, Padua, Cagliari and Marche Polytechnic.
• 27 Oct to 10 Nov: the first non-EU enrolment period at Parma, from its local list.
• Tue 3 Nov: round 2 of the national ranking (point 10(e)), and Pavia's vacant non-EU places with its replacement list (Pavia call).

Frequently asked questions

Is 60 a good IMAT score?

It depends on the university and the year. In 2025, 60 was above the last admitted score on Bari's and Messina's official non-EU lists and below it at Catania and Parma. In 2024 it was above Catania and Parma only, and in 2023 above all four lists we could read.

Is 70 a good IMAT score?

On every official non-EU list we could read from 2023 to 2025, 70 was above the last admitted score, and the highest was Parma's 67.60 in 2025, read at seat count. Eleven of the 16 universities with non-EU places have no list we could read, and no past list sets the 2026 line.

Does the 20-point minimum apply to non-EU students living abroad?

No. Article 3(2) of Decree 1005 sets 20 points for the national ranking only. Under article 3(3), non-EU applicants living abroad are ranked with any score above zero, but a paper with no answers is not ranked.

Can one IMAT score count at several universities?

No, not for non-EU applicants living abroad. Article 2(3) of Decree 1005 ranks them only at the university where they submitted pre-enrolment. EU candidates and non-EU candidates living in Italy list preferences instead, and each round offers the highest one their score reaches.

Is the last admitted score the same as a pass mark?

No. It is the lowest score admitted on one university's list in one year, once the places ran out. It moves with the test, the places and the applicants: Bari's went from 65.80 in 2024 to 50.90 in 2025.

Can two candidates with the same score get different results?

Yes. On Messina's 2025 non-EU first list, positions 56 and 57 both scored 58.20, and of the two only position 56 was admitted; position 57 came in at round 1. For the national ranking, article 3(6) of Decree 1005 breaks ties by section scores, starting with biology.

Will the 2026 cut-offs be higher than in 2025?

That cannot be known before the lists appear. From 2023 to 2024 the last admitted score rose at all four universities with lists for both years, and in 2025 Bari and Messina fell while Catania and Parma rose. Places also change in 2026/27, with 20 fewer at Catania and 5 more at Messina.

Why do other websites give different good-score ranges?

Some ranges online are labelled estimates, and others mix first lists, later rounds and the national ranking. At Bari, for example, the first 2025 non-EU list ended at 49.30 and the corrected list three days later at 50.90, which is the official figure. We use only each university's own list, with its date and link.
