IMAT Results 2026: Dates, Ranking and Scorrimento

The IMAT results 2026 arrive in stages: anonymous scores on Universitaly on Thursday 8 October 2026, then the named national ranking on Monday 26 October. Non-EU applicants living abroad are ranked separately, by the university where they pre-enrolled. Every date below comes from MUR Decree 1005 of 6 August 2026, Universitaly and the universities' own 2026/27 calls.

In short

• Scores: anonymous, by the code on your answer-sheet label, in the Universitaly reserved area on Thursday 8 October 2026. Your own paper follows on Monday 19 October.
• National ranking: a named list on Monday 26 October 2026 for EU candidates and non-EU candidates resident in Italy, with 4 days to enrol and a second round on Tuesday 3 November.
• Non-EU applicants living abroad: ranked only by their pre-enrolment university. Bologna, Padua, Cagliari and Marche Polytechnic say their lists come out on 26 October 2026.
• Not admitted this year: your score does not carry over, so you sit the IMAT again in 2027. Decree 1005 sets no limit on attempts.
• ApplyAZ: ApplyAZ, with offices in Milan and India, works only with Italian public universities and takes care of the whole process for eligible students from countries like India: university checks, applications, Universitaly pre-enrolment, the DSU scholarship and the visa file.

When are the IMAT 2026 results out?

IMAT 2026 results come out on Thursday 8 October 2026, as anonymous scores listed by the code on your answer-sheet label. On Monday 19 October you can see your own paper, and on Monday 26 October the named national ranking appears. Non-EU applicants living abroad receive a separate ranking from their pre-enrolment university.

The table sets out every dated step from the close of registration to the 2027/28 visa deadline. Rows marked "our count" apply the decree's counting rule: 4 days to enrol and 12:00 on the fifth day to confirm interest, counting the publication day and skipping Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

How does the label code keep IMAT scores anonymous?

Scores first appear against a code, not your name. Each box of 50 test packs comes with 60 pairs of identical barcode labels, and each candidate picks one pair at a separate desk after the test. One label goes on the personal data sheet and the other on the answer sheet, so markers never see a name.

On 8 October 2026 CINECA publishes only the score for each label code, in the reserved area of Universitaly. Names are attached later, once each university has sent CINECA its candidates' identity data within 5 working days, and your score stays visible in the reserved area until the whole procedure ends.

How does the IMAT ranking work in 2026?

The IMAT ranking works in two tracks. EU candidates and non-EU candidates resident in Italy enter one national ranking if they score at least 20 out of 90. Non-EU applicants living abroad compete only in the local ranking of their pre-enrolment university, where any score above zero counts, though a paper with no answers is not ranked.

There are two national rankings, one for Medicine and Surgery with Dentistry and one for Veterinary Medicine, all taught in English. Each round places you on the highest of your preferences that your score reaches, given the seats and the candidates ahead of you. If that is your "first useful preference", the top one still in play, you are assigned there; if it is a lower one, you are booked there.

Your preferences were fixed at 15:00 on 9 September 2026, when registration closed.

A worked example: a candidate who listed Pavia first and Turin second, with a score that reaches Turin's seats but not Pavia's, is booked at Turin while Pavia's seats are still in play, as in round 1. The candidate can move up to Pavia in a later round, and becomes assigned at Turin if every Pavia seat is taken by enrolled candidates.

The decree has no rule to reopen the ranking or lower the 20-point minimum. Candidates with a disability can have up to 50% extra time and those with a specific learning disorder up to 30%, and every paper is scored by the same rule.

How are ties broken?

When two candidates have the same score, the decree compares their subject scores first, starting with biology, then checks for a recognised English certificate, then gives preference for a certified invalidity or disability, and finally puts the younger candidate first. The four steps below come from Article 3(6) of Decree 1005 and apply to every ranking.

1. Subject scores: the higher score in biology, then chemistry, then physics and mathematics, then logical reasoning, then reading and knowledge.
2. English certificate: a recognised certificate at B2 or above held by the registration deadline, from the list in Allegato 3: Cambridge (FCE or BEC Vantage for B2, CAE or BEC Higher for C1, CPE for C2), City and Guilds, Pearson PTE General levels 3 to 5, EDI (LCCIEB), IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 for B2, 7.0 to 8.0 for C1 and 8.5 to 9.0 for C2, Trinity ISE II to IV, and TOEFL 87 to 109 for B2 or 110 to 120 for C1. A school year at an English-medium school counts.
3. Invalidity or disability: a candidate with an invalidity of 66% or more, or a disability certified under Law 104/1992, art. 3(3), is preferred.
4. Age: the younger candidate goes first.

What do "assigned", "booked" and "waiting" mean?

Each round of the national ranking gives you one status. Assigned means your score reaches a seat on your first useful preference, and you must enrol there within 4 days or lose it. Booked means you hold a seat on a lower preference and can enrol or wait, while waiting means no seat on any preference yet.

Candidates who have enrolled, who turned down the seat offered or whose status reads "places exhausted" do not need to confirm interest.

How many days do you have to enrol after the ranking?

You have 4 days to enrol after each round of the national ranking, counting the day it is published and leaving out Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For round 1, published on Monday 26 October 2026, that means Thursday 29 October. For round 2, published on Tuesday 3 November, it means Friday 6 November.

Enrolment happens at the university, under its own administrative procedure, and cut-off times differ: Turin closes at 15:00 on the fourth day, while Pavia's non-EU window runs to 23:59. No university may enrol students above its number of seats. For students we work with, we handle each university's enrolment steps and deadlines.

What is the confirmation of interest, and what if it is missed?

The confirmation of interest is a short online step in the Universitaly reserved area that keeps you in the national ranking. It is due by 12:00 on the fifth day after each round: Friday 30 October and Monday 9 November 2026. Missing it removes you from every later round, and no justification is accepted.

The decree lets a trusted person complete this step for you within the five days, which is how we handle it for the students we work with. An exclusion can be challenged before the Lazio Regional Administrative Court within 60 days, or by an extraordinary appeal within 120 days.

What is scorrimento, and how many rounds are there?

Scorrimento means the ranking moving on: seats not taken up in one round pass to the next candidates in the following round. Round 2 is on Tuesday 3 November 2026, and later rounds repeat the same 4-day and fifth-day cycle. The decree sets no date for them and no end date for the procedure.

A seat freed by a withdrawal or transfer moves the ranking on only while that course still has places; once every seat is filled, later withdrawals open no new rounds. Bologna's call says the updates run until a ministerial decree sets the closing date.

When is the non-EU ranking published at each university?

Each university publishes its own ranking for non-EU applicants living abroad, and the decree sets no date for it. Bologna, Padua, Cagliari and Marche Polytechnic name 26 October 2026 in their calls, while Messina, Catania and Milan say only that the university draws up the list. The table shows what each 2026/27 call states.

Seats for non-EU applicants living abroad are from Tabella B of Decree 1005, and Marco Polo seats are for students from China. On 28 September 2026 we could not find or open the 2026/27 calls for Bari, Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Naples Federico II, Sapienza, Tor Vergata and Milano-Bicocca, and we add them here once they can be read.

Tabella B gives non-EU applicants living abroad 845 Medicine and Surgery places at 16 public universities, as Florence has none this year, or 525 without Tor Vergata's course in Tirana (our sum of the table). Do non-EU applicants get a second round?

Yes, at some universities. Pavia publishes its vacant seats and a replacement list on 3 November 2026, with enrolment by 6 November, and Parma moves its local list on when admitted candidates miss their deadline. The other 2026/27 calls we read do not describe updates for this group.

The decree has no national rule on non-EU seats that stay empty. Pavia's call sends unused Marco Polo seats to other non-EU applicants living abroad, and unused non-EU seats to EU and Italy-resident candidates. In 2025/26, Pavia reported that every non-EU seat was taken.

What documents and deadlines come after admission?

After admission, a non-EU student living abroad needs three things: enrolment at the university by its deadline, a Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement for the school qualification, and a study visa. The visa application must reach the Italian consulate by 30 November 2026, unless the university sets an earlier date, and document deadlines vary by university.

Milan asks for missing documents by 30 November 2026, Cagliari by 30 December 2026 (or 30 March 2027 when the visa is late) and Bologna by 26 February 2027. University acceptance is necessary for the visa, but the consulate still decides it. We prepare the Declaration of Value and the visa file for eligible students.

What can you do if you are not admitted this year?

If you are not admitted, a 2026 score gives no right to a seat in 2027, so the next step is the 2027 IMAT. Until the rounds close, a booked or waiting candidate can still move up. Decree 1005 sets no limit on attempts, and the 2027 dates will come in next year's decree.

1. Stay in the running this year. National candidates keep their place by confirming interest after each round; non-EU applicants follow their university's updates, such as Pavia's replacement list on 3 November. We track both for the students we work with.
2. Plan the 2027 attempt early. The 2026 decree came out on 6 August, and registration opened on 26 August. The visa deadline for 2027/28 moves earlier, to 31 October 2027 or an earlier date set by the university, under the Universitaly procedures valid for both years.
3. Choose the pre-enrolment university with care. Non-EU applicants living abroad compete only at that one university, so we compare its seats and past lists before pre-enrolment.
4. Know what later-year entry means. Places in the second year or later open only through a university notice, for students with recognised medical credits. It is not a route into the first year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my university preferences after seeing my IMAT score?

No. Preferences became final at 15:00 Italian time on 9 September 2026, when registration closed, and Allegato 2 of Decree 1005 says they cannot be changed or added to afterwards. Non-EU applicants living abroad are ranked only at the university where they pre-enrolled.

Does my IMAT 2026 score count for 2027?

No. Article 3(7) of Decree 1005 says being eligible applies only to the current selection and gives no right to a seat in later years. If you are not admitted in 2026/27, you sit the IMAT again under the 2027 decree, which sets that year's date, seats and procedure.

How many times can I take IMAT?

There is no limit in the 2026 rules: Decree 1005 sets none, and each year's decree sets that year's rules. Every attempt is a fresh selection, because a score does not carry over to later years. The 2026 decree was issued on 6 August, so the 2027 rules should follow next summer.

What is the minimum IMAT score to be ranked?

EU candidates and non-EU candidates resident in Italy need at least 20 points out of 90 to enter the national ranking. Non-EU applicants living abroad need a score above zero for their university's local ranking, and a paper with no answers at all is not ranked. Admission then depends on seats and rank.

Can I see my IMAT answer sheet?

Yes. From Monday 19 October 2026 your own paper, your score and your personal data sheet appear in your Universitaly reserved area, and you can download them. Scores themselves are published earlier, on 8 October, by the code on your answer-sheet label rather than by name, as Allegati 1 and 2 of Decree 1005 set out.

When does IMAT scorrimento end?

Decree 1005 sets no closing date. Rounds repeat the same 4-day and fifth-day cycle after 3 November 2026, and Bologna's call says they run until a ministerial decree fixes the end. Once every seat on a course is taken, later withdrawals from that course no longer open new rounds.

What happens if I enrol at a booked university?

Enrolling on a booked seat cancels all your other preferences automatically, so you cannot move up later. If you keep the booking instead and confirm interest by the fifth day, you stay in the ranking for the next round without losing that seat. The choice depends on how close you are to a better preference.

Do non-EU students need NEET for the IMAT?

No. Decree 1005 does not mention NEET, and Italian universities rank non-EU applicants on their IMAT score. Students who plan to practise in India later also need to meet the National Medical Commission's rules for foreign medical graduates, and we go through them with each student at the consultation, before any application.
