Degree and grade rule
You need a bachelor's-level degree that the commission deems suitable. Your record meets the grade rule if it satisfies at least one of these conditions: [1][2]
- a final grade above three quarters of the maximum in your university's system
- a Grade Point Average equivalent to three quarters of the maximum or higher
- a grade equivalent to C or higher on the ECTS scale
- if you have not graduated when assessed, an average exam mark above three quarters of the maximum
If your transcript gives no CGPA, the weighted average of your grades is used. [2] For 2026/27, non-EU applicants living abroad needed the degree by 31 March 2026, and applicants living in Italy by 14 December 2026. [1][2]
The commission checks your knowledge of the basic subjects of engineering, such as mathematics and physics, and of subjects specific to industrial and mechanical engineering. [2] For Italian degrees, a degree in class L-9 (industrial engineering) is enough. Other Italian graduates need 85 CFU in listed sectors, with at least 32 in maths, physics, chemistry, statistics and computing and at least 48 in industrial engineering subjects, plus a final mark of at least 85/110. For foreign degrees Unimore does not set a credit count: the commission reads your exam list and course syllabi against the subject areas above. On a 10-point scale, a CGPA of 7.5 or higher meets the Grade Point Average condition. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical, Industrial, Production, Automobile or Mechatronics Engineering, with maths, physics and core mechanical subjects.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech in Electrical, Chemical, Aerospace or Materials Engineering. Maths and physics are covered, but the commission looks for subjects specific to industrial and mechanical engineering.
- Often short: a B.Tech in Computer Science or IT, a BCA, or a B.Sc. in Physics or Maths, which usually lack mechanical and industrial engineering subjects. A B.Com, BBA or BA does not cover the listed areas.

2026/27 deadlines
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants living abroad who need a visa had to submit the application for evaluation and pay the €20 fee by 31 March 2026, for 40 reserved places. Enrolment runs from 8 July to 22 December 2026. [2]
Italian and EU citizens, and non-EU citizens legally living in Italy, can apply under a separate call until 14 December 2026 and enrol by 22 December 2026. [1] The 2027/28 calls are not yet published and will set the new dates.

Sustainable Industrial Engineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-33, mechanical engineering) worth 120 ECTS, run by the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore).

How the programme is taught
Companies are involved throughout the course: they bring real problems to analyse in class, co-teach lessons, run seminars on topics of industrial interest and offer internships.
Practical work, group projects and laboratory sessions are a standard part of the units. The Tecnopolo building has four classrooms, laboratories and workshops, and spaces for group study.
The department also stresses soft skills such as communication, teamwork and organisation.
Career paths
According to the university, graduates work as industrial engineers in manufacturing, energy production, transport and services, in specialist technical or coordination roles across mechanical, energy and industrial engineering. Typical tasks include:

Fees and scholarships
Unimore sets tuition by family income (ISEE): there is a no-tax area, and fees rise progressively above it. [1]
Non-EU students whose family income and assets are only abroad pay under a fixed reduced-rate system for non-EU students, based on each country's GDP at purchasing power parity and updated every year with World Bank data. [2] For 2026/27, students in the lowest band (a notional Country ISEE of €0 to €30,000) paid €380 plus fixed items in year one.
To be assessed for fee exemption, a scholarship or a residence place, international students living abroad apply online to ER.GO, the Emilia-Romagna regional body, even before admission results or the visa. For 2026/27 the deadline was the end of August 2026, and students who did not apply paid the full fee of about €2,200, in four instalments. [2]
Students who meet the ER.GO requirements are fully exempt from the all-inclusive fee, so the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
Unimore publishes a separate call for international students who need a visa. For 2026/27 it appeared in December 2025, and the deadline to submit the evaluation request through the Esse3 portal, and to pay the €20 non-refundable fee, was 31 March 2026. The call reserved 40 places for non-EU applicants needing a visa. [2]
