Medicine and Surgery is a six-year, 360 ECTS single-cycle degree (class LM-41-R) taught in English by the University of Turin at its Orbassano campus. Entry is through the national admission test set each year by the ministry. Students residing abroad pay €500 to €1,500 a year by country, with zero euro tuition for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A secondary school diploma that gives access to university in your country, obtained after at least 12 years of schooling, with proof of authenticity.
- A place in the ranking of the national admission test for Medicine in English; places, date and content are set each year by a decree of the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
- English at B2 level, assessed through the admission test; a lower level, or a score below 4 in the test's physics and mathematics section, leads to additional learning requirements (OFA).
- Italian at B2 level before the clerkships with patients that start in year 3.
- An Apply@UniTo application (€60) and the Universitaly pre-enrolment for a study visa.
About the programme
Medicine and Surgery is a six-year single-cycle master's degree in class LM-41-R, worth 360 ECTS and taught in English by the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences. Teaching takes place in Orbassano, at the San Luigi Gonzaga university hospital campus near Turin. The course has been taught in English since 2017/18, with its content adapted for the switch.
Access is restricted at national level. Each year a decree of the Ministry of University and Research sets the number of places, the date and the content of the admission test. Apply@UniTo lists 30 places for non-EU applicants residing abroad. It suits students who want to train as doctors in English while building the Italian they will need for clinical work.
What you will study
The first two years cover the scientific bases of medicine together with English and Italian medical language. From year 3 the course moves to clinical subjects organised by organ system, and the last years add laboratory medicine, radiology, oncology, emergency medicine and public health. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

- Biochemical and Molecular Basis of Metabolism (11 ECTS, year 1)
- Clinical Methodology and Semeiotics (11 ECTS, year 2)

- Pathology (12 ECTS) and Neurology (10 ECTS, year 4)
- Gynecology, Obstetrics, Embryology and Pediatrics (10 ECTS, year 5)
- Emergency (10 ECTS) and General Surgery (9 ECTS, year 6)
How the programme is taught
Clerkships start in year 1 with anatomy, histology and interprofessional placements. From year 2 to year 5 a clinical backbone of problem-based case discussion runs alongside lectures, with an Integrated Approach to Problem Solving and evidence-based medicine unit each year. The course uses an advanced medical simulation centre (MEDSIM) and, since 2023/24, an immersive interactive room. Internal medicine and surgery clerkships begin in year 3, when Italian at B2 level is needed for contact with patients. Years 5 and 6 include the qualifying clerkships in the medical, surgical and general medicine areas, and the degree ends with an 18 ECTS thesis.
Career paths
The degree is a qualifying degree (laurea abilitante): the qualifying clerkships of years 5 and 6 are part of the study plan, so graduates obtain the qualification to practise as a doctor in Italy together with the degree. From there, graduates can apply for medical specialisation schools, general practice training or a PhD, or work in research and public health.
Fees and scholarships
Medicine and Surgery has no extra contribution on UniTo's list. For 2026/27 students residing abroad pay €500 to €1,500 a year, depending on the GDP per capita of their country of residence, plus €156 for regional tax and stamp duty. Those from the ministry's particularly poor countries pay only the €156. EDISU Piemonte scholarship winners and eligible students are exempt from the tuition instalments, giving zero euro tuition for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants living abroad applied on Apply@UniTo in the call for bachelor's and single-cycle degrees, 19 February to 15 April 2026. They then registered for the test on Universitaly (26 August to 9 September 2026, with a participation fee) and, if Turin was their first choice, completed the Universitaly visa pre-enrolment by 11 September 2026. The test, under MUR decree 1005 of 6 August 2026, is on 29 September 2026, and national merit rankings follow on 26 October 2026.
Admitted students enrol within four days of the ranking and then apply for a study visa; the consulate decides.
