  • A bachelor's degree with a civil or environmental engineering background, or an equivalent foreign degree.
  • At least 36 credits in mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics and chemistry.
  • At least 36 credits in core civil engineering subjects (hydraulics, fluid mechanics, structural and construction engineering), with at least one exam in each.
  • English at B2 level (CEFR).
  • No entrance test: the teaching board reviews your CV and may hold an interview.

About the programme

Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Engineering (Ingegneria costiera e marina sostenibile) is a two-year laurea magistrale in class LM-23, civil engineering, offered by the Department of Civil, Computer Science and Aeronautical Technologies Engineering of Roma Tre University in Rome. It is worth 120 ECTS and, from 2026/27, is taught fully in English.

The degree prepares civil engineers to protect and develop coastal and marine environments: shoreline defence, pollution control, water quality, and the planning and design of ports, transport links, offshore platforms and coastal works. It responds to erosion, sea-level rise and the move to renewable marine energy. It suits civil and environmental engineering graduates with a strong grounding in hydraulics and structures.

What you will study

The first year builds knowledge of the marine environment, from ocean and atmospheric fluid dynamics to sediment transport, coastal hydrology and marine ecology. The second year turns to planning, design and retrofitting of coastal infrastructure. Units in the 2026/27 plan include:

  • Ocean Dynamics and Transport Phenomena in Fluids
  • Ocean Sensing and Monitoring, and Offshore Structures Engineering (6 ECTS each)
  • Coastal Hydrology
  • Marine Sustainability and Environmental Impact Assessment (6 ECTS)
  • Marine Ecosystems and Bio-resources, and Maritime Policies and Blue Economy (5 ECTS each)
  • Coastal and Harbour Engineering, and Maritime Transportation and Infrastructures
  • Sustainable Structural Design and Retrofitting, and Marine Geotechnics (6 ECTS each)

How the programme is taught

Units combine lectures with laboratory and design work, and students use modern monitoring systems, including data from the European Copernicus programme. The course offers international experience through Erasmus and the International Project Week, plus seminars and internships with companies, agencies and public bodies. It ends with a 12 ECTS individual thesis on a real coastal or marine problem, which can be design-based, numerical or experimental.

Career paths

According to the department, graduates find work with:

  • Companies that design, build and manage coastal infrastructure
  • Public bodies and environmental agencies
  • Engineering consultancies and design firms
  • Research and development centres
  • Independent professional practice

The degree also gives access to PhD programmes in civil engineering.

Fees and scholarships

Tuition at Roma Tre is not a flat rate: the annual contribution is set by ISEE band under the Regolamento Tasse, plus a €16 stamp duty and the Lazio regional tax, which was €140 for 2025/26. Scholarships and student housing in Lazio come from DiSCo, and eligible students can apply; the region decides awards. Depending on family income, this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.

How to apply from outside the EU

For 2026/27, admission ran through the call for the department's master's degrees. The teaching board checks that your transcript covers the required maths, physics and civil engineering credits and may interview you. Non-EU applicants living abroad apply first on Roma Tre's GOMP portal and complete pre-enrolment on Universitaly. For 2026/27 the ordinary window ran from 7 April to 15 September 2026, with a supplementary period to 15 December for an extra fee. After admission, you enrol by paying the first instalment and apply for a type D study visa.

How ApplyAZ helps

If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
