School-leaving requirement
You need an Italian secondary school diploma or a foreign qualification obtained after at least 12 years of schooling and recognised as equivalent, under the Ministry's rules for international students. The same rule applies to EU citizens, non-EU citizens living in Italy and non-EU citizens living abroad. [1]
You are also expected to have the knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics set out each year in the national rules for admission to veterinary medicine. [2]
What this means for your school results
Your school marks do not rank you: places follow your test score, and your qualification only has to meet the rule above. As a guide, based on that rule:
- Usually a fit: an Indian Class 12 certificate from CBSE, ISC or a state board after 12 years of schooling, a Pakistani HSSC or FSc, a Bangladeshi HSC, or Sri Lankan or British A levels.
- Check carefully: a qualification you are still completing, or a school stream with little biology or chemistry, since 38 of the 60 test questions cover those two subjects.
- Often short: a Class 10 or secondary school certificate on its own, or any qualification after fewer than 12 years of schooling.
English
English at B2 (CEFR) or higher, usually reached at the end of secondary school, or an equivalent certificate. If you have no certificate, the University Language Centre checks your declared level with a placement test at enrolment. [2]

The admission test
Entry is through a single national test for English-taught medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine, with identical content at every site. For 2026/27 it was held on 29 September 2026; in Naples it took place at the Monte Sant'Angelo university complex, and candidates could also choose a test site abroad from the ministry's list. [1]
- 60 multiple-choice questions with five options in 100 minutes: 4 on reading skills and knowledge from school studies, 5 on logical reasoning and problems, 23 on biology, 15 on chemistry and 13 on physics and mathematics.
- Scoring: 1.5 points for a correct answer, minus 0.4 for a wrong one and zero for a blank, up to 90 points.
- Non-EU applicants living abroad qualify with any score above zero, in a ranking set by Federico II. EU applicants and non-EU applicants living in Italy need at least 20 points and enter a national ranking.
- Ties are broken by the biology, chemistry, physics and maths, logic and reading scores in turn, then by a declared English certificate.
Students admitted with a score below 20 receive additional learning requirements (OFA) in general chemistry, statistical physics and biochemistry, cleared by passing those first-year exams. [1][2]

- Admission test: 29 September 2026.
- Scores: 8 October 2026, with test papers visible on Universitaly from 19 October 2026.
- National ranking: 26 October 2026. Admitted candidates have four days, not counting Saturdays and public holidays, to enrol after each ranking update.
Non-EU applicants living abroad enrol at the university offices by the deadline published with their ranking. All deadlines are final, and the 2027/28 call sets the next dates. [1]

About the programme
Veterinary Medicine is a five-year single-cycle master's degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-42) worth 300 ECTS.
It is run by the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production within the School of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, and it is taught entirely in English at the Frullone complex in Naples. Its first intake was in 2026/27. [1][4]
The course follows the criteria of EAEVE, the European association that sets quality benchmarks for veterinary schools.
It trains veterinarians able to take responsible roles in clinics and surgeries, and to coordinate and supervise companies in the agri-food chain. It suits school leavers with a strong interest in animal health, biology and public health who want a regulated professional degree.
What you will study
The course runs over ten semesters and 29 exams. Years one and two cover the basic sciences, while years three to five move into the characterising veterinary subjects.
Each year has its own theme, from principles of veterinary practice and digitalisation in year one to clinical sciences, food safety and professional training in year five. Areas covered include:
- Plant and animal biology and genetics
- Structure, function and metabolism of biologically relevant molecules
- Structure and function of animal organisms
- Informatics, statistics and bioethics
- Animal husbandry, breeding and nutrition
- Infectious and parasitic diseases, and pathological anatomy
- Food inspection and veterinary public health
- Clinical medicine for food-producing animals and companion animals
How the programme is taught
Practical work is central. For characterising subjects, at least half of the teaching workload is practical, split into laboratory work, non-clinical animal work and clinical work.
Practical evaluative training carries 35 ECTS: 30 compulsory credits, from animal handling and patient admission in the Teaching Veterinary Hospital in years one and two, through hospital and mobile clinic activity in years three and four, to 18 credits at farms, local health authorities and other facilities in year five.
Five further credits are elective, alongside 12 ECTS of elective courses.
The degree ends with a practical evaluative test and a 10 ECTS thesis, experimental or based on a literature review. Under Law 163 of 2021, this final exam qualifies graduates to practise as veterinarians.
Career paths
Graduates earn the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine title and can work across the sectors defined by national and European law, or continue with PhD programmes, university master's courses, specialisation schools and the European veterinary specialist colleges (EBVS).
