School-leaving requirement
You need a secondary school diploma of at least four years or an equivalent qualification. For 2026/27, students finishing school could apply if they obtained the diploma by the end of the 2025/26 school year. The same rule applies to both quotas. [1]
All candidates sit the test on condition, and the university can exclude anyone who does not meet the requirements. For qualifications from outside Italy, the call refers to the Ministry's rules on international students and the recognition of qualifications for 2026/27 and 2027/28. [1]
What this means for your school results
Your school marks do not rank you: places follow your IMAT score, and your qualification only has to meet the rule above. As a guide, based on that rule:
- Usually a fit: a completed Class 12 or Higher Secondary certificate from India (CBSE, ISC or a state board), an HSSC or FSc from Pakistan, an HSC from Bangladesh, GCE A levels from Sri Lanka, or British A levels, which are full school-leaving qualifications.
- Check carefully: a qualification you are still completing, which has to be awarded by the end of the school year the call sets.
- Often short: a Class 10 or secondary school certificate, or any diploma that does not complete upper secondary school.
The IMAT covers biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, so a science stream gives you the closest preparation. [1]
English
The 2026/27 call does not set a minimum English level for admission. When you register for the IMAT, you declare whether you hold one of the language certificates listed in Annex 3 of the Ministry's decree. That certificate is used only as a tie-breaker in the ranking. [1]
The IMAT admission test
There is a single admission test for all candidates, with the same questions across the country. For 2026/27 it had 60 multiple-choice questions with five options each, to be answered in 100 minutes: [1]
- 23 on biology
- 15 on chemistry
- 13 on physics and mathematics
- 5 on logical reasoning and problems
- 4 on reading skills and knowledge from your studies
Each correct answer earns 1.5 points, each wrong answer loses 0.4 and an unanswered question scores 0. Ties are broken first by the biology score, then chemistry, physics and mathematics, logical reasoning and reading, then by declared language certificates. Foreign venues for 2026/27 included India, Pakistan, Dubai in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, the USA and other countries on the official list. [1]
Places, minimum score and ranking
For 2026/27 the Ministry allocated Vanvitelli 120 places: 70 for EU citizens and non-EU citizens living in Italy, and 50 for non-EU applicants living abroad. [1]
- Non-EU applicants living abroad: ranked by Vanvitelli on its own list. You need a score above zero, and candidates who answer no questions are not ranked.
- EU and equivalent candidates: ranked on a single national list, with a minimum of 20 out of 90.
2026/27 deadlines
- 26 August to 9 September 2026 (15:00 Italian time): IMAT registration on Universitaly, payment of the test fee and choice of test venue. Requests for disability or SLD support had the same deadline.
- By 15 September 2026: Vanvitelli publishes the test location.
- 29 September 2026: the IMAT, starting at 13:30 in Italy, with candidates at Vanvitelli called for 10:00.
- 8 October 2026: scores published on Universitaly.
- 26 October 2026: rankings published, including Vanvitelli's ranking for non-EU applicants living abroad.
- 26 October to 12:00 on 29 October 2026: enrolment of winners at Vanvitelli.
- 3 November 2026: first ranking update.

Enrolment and ranking updates
Winners enrol by submitting the enrolment application and the documents listed on the form to the Students' Office for Medicine and Surgery in Naples. Because the deadlines are short, the call also accepts the documents by email. [1]
After each ranking update, assigned candidates must enrol within four days, counting the publication day and excluding Saturdays and holidays, or they lose the place. Candidates who have not enrolled must confirm their interest on Universitaly within five days to stay in the ranking. [1]

About the programme
Medicine and Surgery in English is a six-year single-cycle degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-41) worth 360 ECTS.
It is run by the Department of Precision Medicine of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli at the Sant'Andrea delle Dame site on Via De Crecchio in Naples, and entry is through the IMAT, the national admission test for medicine in English. [1][2]
The course aims to train doctors with a multidisciplinary, integrated view of health and disease, professional autonomy, and attention to the patient as a person.
It is oriented to the community, to prevention and to health promotion, with specific attention to the human and ethical side of medicine.
What you will study
The course runs over 12 semesters and 36 integrated courses, split into two three-year periods: the first on biology and the basic sciences, the second mainly clinical. At least 60 credits go to activities that build professional skills.

- Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Medical and Surgical Emergencies
The first year also includes Scientific English and an elective activity in Italian language skills.
How the programme is taught
Besides lectures you complete professionalising activities and clinical internships in hospitals and with general practitioners, then a practical evaluation internship (TPV) in the final year. Sixteen credits go to preparing the thesis.
The university also offers an MD/PhD path of excellence that adds research from the second to the sixth year, and exchange agreements for study and internships abroad.
Career paths
Under Italian rules (Ministerial Decree 58 of 2018), the final exam also serves as the state exam, so graduates who pass the practical evaluation internship can practise as doctors in Italy. [2]
