Medicine and Surgery in English is a six-year single-cycle degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-41) worth 360 ECTS. It is run by the Department of Precision Medicine of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli at the Sant'Andrea delle Dame site on Via De Crecchio in Naples, and entry is through national admission tests.
The course aims to train doctors with a multidisciplinary, integrated view of health and disease, professional autonomy, and attention to the patient as a person. It is oriented to the community, to prevention and to health promotion, with specific attention to the human and ethical side of medicine.
What you will study
The course runs over 12 semesters and 36 integrated courses, split into two three-year periods: the first on biology and the basic sciences, the second mainly clinical. At least 60 credits go to activities that build professional skills. Integrated courses in the 2026/27 teaching plan include:
- Biology and Molecular Biology, and Chemistry and Introduction to Biochemistry
- Human Anatomy, and Medical Histology and Embryology
- Medical Physiology and Biochemistry
- General Pathology, Physiopathology and Medical Genetics
- Microbiology, and Immunology and Immunopathology
- Cardiovascular Diseases, Respiratory Diseases, and Haematology and Oncology
- Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases, and Psychiatry and Child Neuropsychiatry
- Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Medical and Surgical Emergencies
The first year also includes Scientific English and an elective activity in Italian language skills.
How the programme is taught
Besides lectures you complete professionalising activities and clinical internships in hospitals and with general practitioners, then a practical evaluation internship (TPV) in the final year. Sixteen credits go to preparing the thesis. The university also offers an MD/PhD path of excellence that adds research from the second to the sixth year, and exchange agreements for study and internships abroad.
Career paths
Under Italian rules (Ministerial Decree 58 of 2018), the final exam also serves as the state exam, so graduates who pass the practical evaluation internship can practise as doctors in Italy. The degree also opens the way to medical specialisation schools, PhDs in the biomedical area, and university master's and advanced courses.
