Mathematical Engineering is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's degree (class LM-44) taught in English at the University of Naples Federico II. It applies advanced mathematics, numerical simulation and data analysis to engineering problems, with two curricula. Fees follow family income, so it can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in mathematics, engineering, physics or a closely related subject.
- Each application is assessed as a whole, looking at your full academic background.
- English at B2 level.
- No entrance test; access is open once your requirements are checked.
- Foreign qualifications with translation, legalisation and a Diploma Supplement, CIMEA certificate or declaration of value, per the university's admission rules.
About the programme
Mathematical Engineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-44, mathematical modelling for engineering) worth 120 ECTS and taught in English. It is run by the Department of Mathematics and Applications "Renato Caccioppoli" within the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School of the University of Naples Federico II.
The course sits at the frontier between engineering and mathematics. It combines mathematical theory, practical engineering and scientific computing, and builds skills in modelling, numerical simulation, data analysis and probability and statistics. It suits graduates in mathematics, engineering or physics who want to solve complex real-world problems with advanced applied maths.
What you will study
You choose Curriculum A, oriented to information engineering, or Curriculum B, oriented to industrial and civil engineering. Each has compulsory units plus options from three groups, 12 ECTS of free choice, 3 ECTS of further activities such as seminars, and an 18 ECTS final exam. Core and option units include:
- Real and Functional Analysis and Mathematical Physics Models
- Numerical Methods and Nonlinear Systems (9 ECTS each)
- Thermodynamics and Transport Phenomena
- Computational Fluid Dynamics and Electrodynamics of Continuous Media
- Curriculum A options: Deep Learning, Algorithms and Parallel Computing, Information Theory, Operational Research
- Curriculum B options: Partial Differential Equations, Stochastic Processes, Nonlinear Dynamics and Control, Theory of Elasticity
- Paired modules such as Statistical Methods for Industrial Process Monitoring with Signal Theory or Economic Theory
How the programme is taught
Some first-semester courses in year one are partly delivered as MOOCs on the Federica Web Learning platform, introduced in an online orientation meeting. You can earn the further-activity credits by attending the Colloquia in Mathematical Engineering seminar series. The thesis is an academic essay presenting original results, defended before a committee. Internal double degrees with the MSc in Mathematics and in Engineering are possible, and the course site lists an international double degree in Mathematical Analysis and Modelling with partners including Augsburg, Rouen and Seville, plus Erasmus+ exchanges.
Career paths
The course points graduates to industry and academic research, where employers need people who can formulate a problem, model it mathematically, code it and interpret the results. Graduates can also continue directly into PhD programmes.
- aerospace, precision mechanics and metalworking
- shipbuilding, energy efficiency and renewable energy
- chemistry, materials and electronic components
- ICT, logistics and transport systems
- packaging
Fees and scholarships
Federico II calculates each student's yearly contribution from the ISEE for university study and credits earned, and its 2026/27 simulator adds a regional tax of €130, €151 or €173. Families living abroad use an ISEE universitario parificato. The Campania DSU body, ADISURC, offers income-based grants, so this degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
The course reviews each application as a whole, looking for a bachelor's in mathematics, engineering or physics and B2 English. Enrolment usually runs from 16 July to 31 October.
If you live outside the EU, you also pre-enrol on Universitaly, choosing Federico II, this degree and your consulate, then apply for a type D study visa. For 2026/27 the Universitaly deadline was 15 June 2026, and translated, legalised qualifications with a Diploma Supplement, CIMEA certificate or declaration of value went to the course coordinator. The 2027/28 dates are pending.
How ApplyAZ helps
If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
Questions and answers
Is Mathematical Engineering taught in English?
Yes. The degree is taught in English and applicants must show English at B2 level. Some first-year courses are partly delivered as online MOOCs on the Federica platform.
Which bachelor's degrees are accepted?
Applicants are generally expected to hold a bachelor's in mathematics, engineering, physics or a closely related subject. Each application is assessed as a whole.
Is there an entrance test?
No. Access is open, subject to a check of your background and English level.
What is the difference between the two curricula?
Curriculum A leans towards information engineering, with options such as deep learning and information theory. Curriculum B leans towards industrial and civil engineering, with options such as PDEs and elasticity.
When can I apply for 2027/28?
The 2027/28 dates are not published yet. Enrolment usually runs from 16 July to 31 October, and for 2026/27 the Universitaly pre-enrolment deadline for non-EU applicants was 15 June 2026.
How much does it cost?
Federico II sets fees from ISEE and credits earned, plus a regional tax of €130 to €173 in 2026/27. Eligible students can apply for ADISURC regional grants.
