Master in Philosophical Sciences at University of Milan

About the programme

Philosophical Sciences is a two-year master's degree in class LM-78-R, worth 120 ECTS and run by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Milan in Milan. The degree is taught in Italian and English, in person, with open admission after a check of entry requirements. Of its four curricula, Reasoning, Analysis and Modelling is the one for students who want to study in English: the official study plan says some of its courses are held in Italian and others in English, and that students can include only English-taught courses in their plan.

The curriculum gives an in-depth grounding in the concepts and methods of analytical philosophy, with specialised training on questions at the centre of current debate: the nature and limits of human knowledge, the relations between language, thought and reality, the structure of sound reasoning and the fundamental categories of reality. It suits graduates in philosophy, or with a solid philosophy component in their degree, who enjoy logic and rigorous argument.

What you will study

The curriculum combines two compulsory units with several elective groups, plus a 3 ECTS English B2 proficiency requirement, 3 ECTS of further language skills or training, 9 ECTS of free electives and a 21 ECTS thesis. English-taught units in the 2026/27 educational plan include:

• Language and Metaphysics
• Logic of Computation and Information
• Probabilistic Logic
• Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Cognitive Neuroscience
• Early Modern, Late Modern and Medieval Philosophy

Other units in the same groups, such as Metaphysics of Mind or History of Epistemology, are taught in Italian, so an English-only plan means choosing carefully from each group.

How the programme is taught

Lecture attendance is recommended but not required, while workshop attendance is mandatory. If you write your thesis in English, you can ask to present and discuss it in English. The programme has run Erasmus exchanges with other European universities for more than ten years, across the history of philosophy, theoretical and moral philosophy, aesthetics and the philosophy of science. The degree's other curricula are Critique of the Contemporary World, Philosophies, Cultures and Societies, and Philosophy and History of Philosophy.

Fees and scholarships

Philosophical Sciences falls in fee Area A, the lower band of the 2026/27 regulation. Where family income and assets are abroad and no Italian ISEE is possible, the second instalment is fixed by country group: €200 for Group A, which includes countries like India, Nigeria and Iran, €910 for Group B and €3,204 for Group C, on top of a €146 first instalment. The university runs the Lombardy DSU scholarship call, and full winners are exempt from the second instalment, which means zero euro tuition for eligible students.

How to apply from outside the EU

Admission rests on your record: graduates with 95/110 or more who meet the curricular requirements enter directly, others have an interview, and holders of foreign degrees may be interviewed as well. For 2026/27, non-EU applicants needing a visa applied on apply.unimi.it from 22 January to 30 April 2026 with a €30 fee; other candidates could apply until 30 October. The 2027/28 notice was not out in September 2026.

Admitted visa applicants then complete Universitaly pre-enrolment (by 31 July for 2026/27) and apply for a type D study visa, which needs B2 in the language of instruction. A CIMEA statement of comparability or a declaration of value is due by 30 November.
