Migration Studies and New Societies is a two-year, 120 ECTS joint master's degree (class LM-90-R) taught entirely in English by the University of Milan with the University of Warsaw and Charles University in Prague. Students spend a semester in each city and receive one joint diploma. Tuition is €4,500 a year under the joint agreement.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) in any field, with adequate preparation in at least two of these areas: political science, economics and statistics, law. Holders of Italian degrees need at least 42 ECTS in these sectors.
- English at B2 level or higher (CEFR), shown by a certificate issued in the last three years (two years for TOEFL).
- A compulsory remote interview with an admissions board of teachers from the three partner universities, which also weighs your academic record, fit with the programme, experience and career plans.
- Degree documents in English, French, German, Spanish or Italian, or officially translated, plus your passport.
- A €30 application fee; for 2026/27 non-EU visa applicants had to apply by 30 April 2026.
About the programme
Migration Studies and New Societies is a two-year joint master's degree in class LM-90-R (European studies), worth 120 ECTS and taught entirely in English. The University of Milan is the administrative seat, so you apply and enrol there, and the degree is run with the University of Warsaw and Charles University in Prague within the 4EU+ European university alliance. Four Milan departments teach on it, led by the Department of International, Legal, Historical and Political Studies.
The programme trains internationally minded professionals who can understand and manage migration and cultural diversity in public administrations, international institutions, companies, professional firms, third-sector organisations and research centres. It combines law, economics, geopolitics, languages, sociology, anthropology and philosophy, with a focus on how migration is governed in Europe. Graduates receive a single diploma from the three universities.
What you will study
Mobility is built into the degree. The first semester is in Milan, the second in Warsaw and the third in Prague, with at least 30 ECTS at each university, and you choose where to spend the fourth. During the first year you also pick one of three pathways: International Migration and Policies, Civil Society and Integration, or Social Anthropology of Space and Mobility. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

Electives across the pathways include Migration Policies, Migration and Media, Policy Analysis, Ethnography in Practice, Social Inequalities and EU Labour Migration Law.
How the programme is taught
This is an in-person degree, and attendance of at least 70% of classes is compulsory in every taught course. The final semester includes a compulsory internship of at least 6 ECTS (150 hours), which can be extended by a further 3 ECTS. The dissertation carries 15 ECTS together with the Prague diploma seminar and is preferably based on the internship experience.
Career paths
The university sets out four professional profiles for graduates:
- Officer for migration policies and flow management in EU and international institutions and in public administrations
- Operator in the third sector, reception and integration, in NGOs, cooperatives and associations
- Specialist in diversity management and job orientation, in human resources and employment services
- Expert on migration issues in journalism and in institutional or political communication
Fees and scholarships
This degree does not use the University of Milan's usual country-group fees. Under the agreement between Milan, Warsaw and Prague, tuition is €4,500 a year for 2026/27, paid in two instalments. The fee regulation also states that its exemptions, including the waiver for DSU scholarship winners, do not apply here, apart from the full exemption for students with a disability of 66% or more. Erasmus+ grants under the partners' agreements, plus university funding for disadvantaged students, can help with the mobility semesters.
How to apply from outside the EU
There is no written test: the board reviews your file and interviews you remotely. For 2026/27, non-EU applicants needing a visa applied on apply.unimi.it between 22 January and 30 April 2026, paying a €30 fee, and had to meet the curricular requirements by 30 June. The 2027/28 notice was not out in September 2026.
Once admitted, you complete Universitaly pre-enrolment (by 31 July for 2026/27), apply for a type D study visa with B2 English and submit a CIMEA statement of comparability or a declaration of value by 30 November. As the second and third semesters are in Poland and the Czech Republic, ask the programme office how residence permits work for those periods.
