Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine is a two-year, 120 ECTS master (class LM-9-R) taught in English by the University of Milan at LITA in Segrate, in the Milan area. It offers five curricula, from neuroscience to oncology. Non-EU students with family income abroad pay a fixed fee by country group.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS, including at least 50 ECTS in subjects such as physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, statistics and informatics.

About the programme
Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine is a two-year master's degree in class LM-9-R (medical, veterinary and pharmaceutical biotechnology), taught entirely in English by the University of Milan. Lessons take place in person at LITA, Via Fratelli Cervi 93, in Segrate, a town in the Milan metropolitan area.
Entry is limited: for 2026/27 there were 65 places plus 10 for non-EU applicants living abroad who need a visa. The degree suits graduates in biotechnology, biology or related life sciences who want to work on the molecular causes of disease and on new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
What you will study
The first two terms are shared: pathogenesis, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology applied to biotechnology. In the third term you move into one of five curricula: Neuroscience; Medical and Experimental Oncology; Molecular Diagnostics for Personalized Medicine; Experimental Immunology and Transplantations; or Advanced Computation for Human Disease Modelling. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

How the programme is taught
The year runs in trimesters, and attendance is compulsory, with up to 25% absence allowed. You must pass the six common exams before the curriculum exams. The second year centres on 4 ECTS (100 hours) of professional training and a 21 ECTS final exam. Erasmus+ partners include KU Leuven, Leiden University Medical Center and the Universidad de Cantabria, and a research placement is possible at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Bellinzona, Switzerland; up to nine months abroad can count for 32 ECTS.

Graduates work in public and private research institutes, universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, biotech firms, contract research organisations and scientific communication agencies. Roles named by the university include:

Fees and scholarships
This master is in fee Area B. A student whose family lives and earns abroad pays, for 2026/27, a fixed second instalment by country group: €256 a year in Group A, which covers countries like India, Bangladesh and Nigeria, €1,164 in Group B and €4,101.12 in Group C, plus a first instalment from €146. Full winners of the Lombardy regional DSU scholarship, which the university runs, pay no second instalment: zero euro tuition for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
Non-EU visa applicants do not sit the written test. The admission board first evaluates your academic record and then interviews shortlisted candidates on the core scientific subjects, ranking them for the 10 reserved places. For 2026/27 visa applicants applied on apply.unimi.it from 24 March to 29 May 2026 with a €30 fee, and results came by 26 August. The 2027/28 call was not yet published in September 2026.
Admitted students submit the Universitaly pre-enrolment (by 31 July for 2026/27) and apply for a type D study visa with B2 English. Your degree also needs a declaration of value or a CIMEA statement.
