Entry requirements
Detailed entry requirements
Mechatronic Engineering asks for a bachelor's degree or recognised foreign equivalent with at least 40 credits in maths, physics, chemistry and computing fundamentals and 60 more in engineering subjects, a suitable academic record, a course syllabus, and English at B2 with IELTS 5.5 as the listed minimum. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]
Degree and credit requirement
You need a bachelor's degree or three-year university diploma, or a foreign academic qualification from an accredited university earned after at least 15 years of total education, counting primary school, secondary school and university. [1]
Italian degrees in classes L-8 (Information Engineering) and L-9 (Industrial Engineering) meet the curricular requirements automatically. Every other degree must include: [1]
- At least 40 credits in basic subjects: chemistry fundamentals (CHIM/07), physics (FIS/01, FIS/03), computer engineering (ING-INF/05), and algebra, geometry, mathematical analysis and numerical analysis (MAT/02, MAT/03, MAT/05, MAT/08).
- At least 60 credits in engineering subjects: physics (FIS/01, FIS/04), hydraulics (ICAR/01), aerospace, mechanical, thermal, manufacturing and industrial engineering, measurements, metallurgy, electrical engineering and drives, bioengineering and engineering management (ING-IND/04, 05, 08, 10, 12 to 17, 21, 31, 32, 34 and 35), electronics, electromagnetic fields, telecommunications, automation, computer engineering, bioengineering and electronic measurements (ING-INF/01 to 07), and the sociology of work and organisations (SPS/09).
Credits in sectors shared by both groups count first towards the 40-credit group. The programme lead can recognise credits in other sectors as equivalent and can admit you with up to 10 missing credits; a larger gap needs the Collegio Coordinator's approval. Missing credits must be made up before enrolment, through single courses for gaps of up to 60 credits. [1]
PoliTo's 2026/27 course table recommends a background in any field of engineering. Students in a five or six-year single-cycle degree who have not graduated need at least 15 years of total education, 3 of them at university, and at least 180 ECTS. [1][3]
What this means for your transcript
As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics (ECE or EEE), Instrumentation, Aerospace or Biomedical Engineering, with solid maths and physics.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science or IT, where computer engineering credits count in both groups but professors also check how well your studies fit mechatronics, and a B.Tech in Civil or Chemical Engineering, where many core subjects sit outside the listed sectors.
- Often short: a B.Sc. in Physics or Mathematics, a BCA or B.Sc. IT, which can cover the 40-credit group but rarely reach 60 engineering credits, and a B.Com, BBA or BA.
Professors read your transcript with the syllabus you upload, so a full and clear syllabus matters for this programme. [1][3] The programme page also offers four review documents, in electronics, computer science, controls and mechanics, to help you assess your preparation before applying. [4]
English
Certified English at CEFR level B2 or higher, with IELTS 5.5 as the listed minimum for this programme. Other certificates are accepted under PoliTo's certificate table, and no Italian is required for admission. [1][2][3]
- Exemption: a degree earned after an English-medium path at a university in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and other listed countries, or a degree from the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, replaces the certificate. You upload an official statement from your university that English was the medium of instruction. [2]
- Sharing scores: TOEFL and TOEIC results are sent with code C285, and Cambridge results are shared online with your Candidate ID. [2]
For the visa, the embassy may ask for extra documents such as a language certificate, so we check this for your file. [2]
Selection
There is no entrance test. The admissions office first checks that you meet the general requirements and have uploaded every document. Professors from the programme, appointed by the Collegio Coordinator, then assess your academic performance and how well your previous university studies fit the degree, through the Apply@polito platform. [1][2]
- Syllabus: required for Mechatronic Engineering. [3]
- GRE: optional but highly valued; you can upload the GRE General Test score report as your one optional extra document. [2][3]
The result is eligible, a conditional offer (eligible, but you still need to finish your bachelor's), or not eligible. A positive evaluation is valid only for the academic year you apply for, and deferrals are not possible. [1][2]
2026/27 deadlines

About the programme
Mechatronic Engineering is a two-year master's degree in class LM-25 (Automation Engineering), taught in English at the main campus of Politecnico di Torino in Turin. It is run by the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications within the Collegio of Computer, Cinema and Mechatronic Engineering. Access is uncapped, subject to an evaluation of your admission requirements. [1][4]
The degree teaches you to integrate electronics, mechanics, electrical drives, automatic control and information technology from the very start of the design process. It suits engineering graduates who want to design and build machines and systems where hardware, software and control work together.
What you will study
The first year covers the core of mechatronics, such as system modelling, electronic systems, automatic control and robotics, together with a first course of your track. You also take basic units chosen according to your bachelor's class. Two courses, Networked Control Systems and Sensors, Embedded Systems and Algorithms for Service Robotics, serve students from hybrid backgrounds, and other students can take them as free credits. In the second year the focus moves to specialist topics and laboratory work, with two core courses of your track and free credits to widen your profile. The six tracks are: [1]
- Control Technologies for Industry 4.0
- Software Technologies for Automation
- HW and Embedded Systems for Industry 4.0
- Technologies for eMobility
- Industrial Technologies and Applications
- Technologies for Space Applications
How the programme is taught
The degree ends with a thesis worth 30 ECTS, about one semester of full-time work. You can instead combine an 18 ECTS thesis with a 12 ECTS internship. The thesis is supervised by a Politecnico professor and can be carried out at a company or organisation in Italy or abroad. The thesis and its presentation are in English. [1]
Career paths
The 2026/27 regulations describe two professional profiles: [1]
- Mechatronic systems designer: design, planning and management of complex systems in public or private manufacturing and service companies, large or small
- Mechatronic systems integrator: integrating commercial components in interdisciplinary teams at automation companies and manufacturers in the automotive, aerospace and robotics industries
The programme page adds engineering, manufacturing, operation and maintenance of mechatronic equipment, and laboratory and facility management. [4]
Fees and scholarships
Politecnico di Torino charges tuition according to citizenship or residence and grants reductions based on family income, with the figures set in its yearly fee rules. You can also apply to EDISU Piemonte, the regional right-to-study body, for a scholarship and, if you cannot reach campus within 60 minutes by public transport, a place in university housing. With a family abroad, we help you submit the foreign income and asset documents so that EDISU can calculate an ISEE parificato.
How to apply from outside the EU
The syllabus of your bachelor's courses goes with your application, as Mechatronic Engineering requires it, and a GRE score is optional but highly valued. [3] Applications are made on Apply@PoliTO, where you pay a €50 non-refundable fee and can rank up to two master's programmes. For 2026/27 the first call closed on 13 February 2026 and the second on 20 April 2026, with results on 15 April and 22 June 2026.
