Industrial Chemistry for Circular and Bio Economy is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's degree (class LM-71) taught in English, run jointly by the University of Naples Federico II and Politecnico di Torino, with a semester in Turin. Enrolment is capped at 30 students, and the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in chemistry (Italian class L-27), or a foreign degree in a field such as chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology or biology with equivalent content.
- Other graduates need at least 8 CFU in maths, 6 in physics, 15 in chemistry and 15 in biochemistry, biotechnology or chemical engineering subjects.
- A final grade of at least 65% of the maximum, with your last degree obtained no more than 7 years ago.
- A certified B2 English level; enrolled students can also reach B2 during the first year through the University Language Centre.
- An online interview on your bachelor's thesis, with a 5 to 6 minute slide presentation, after uploading your CV, transcripts, passport, English certificate and motivation letter.
About the programme
Industrial Chemistry for Circular and Bio Economy (ICCBE) is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-71) worth 120 ECTS and taught in English. It is a joint degree of the University of Naples Federico II, through its Department of Chemical Sciences, and the Politecnico di Torino, and you apply and enrol through Federico II. Enrolment is limited to 30 students.
The course prepares chemists to develop new processes and products for the chemical industry from a circular and bio-economy angle, from laboratory research through pilot plants to full industrial plants. It suits graduates in chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology or biology who want an industry-facing profile in sustainable chemistry.
What you will study
Because students arrive from different backgrounds, the first semester offers two alignment paths, one in biology and one in chemistry. After that everyone follows a common path in industrial chemistry, biotechnology and chemical plants. The current study plan includes:
- Alignment in biology: Bioinorganic Chemistry and Industrial Enzymology (11 CFU), Complements of Microbiology and Biotechnology (10 CFU)
- Alignment in chemistry: Complements of Physical and Analytical Chemistry (11 CFU), Complements of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry (10 CFU)
- Circular Platforms for Energy and Materials Recovery (10 CFU) and Industrial Chemistry (8 CFU)
- Polymers: Production, Recycle and Characterization (6 CFU)
- Green Unit Operations (9 CFU) and Industrial Biotechnology (7 CFU)
- Green Plants Design (11 CFU) and Industrial Green Simulation Process (7 CFU)
- Elective courses or an industry challenge (12 CFU), a traineeship (4 CFU) and a thesis (22 CFU)
How the programme is taught
The first-semester alignment courses are blended: theory is studied online through MOOCs on the Federica Web Learning platform and online tutoring, followed by in-person workshops in Naples or Turin in January and February. The second semester is taught in person in Naples and the third at the Politecnico di Torino. The final semester is for the traineeship and thesis, which can take place at either university or at companies in the sector.
Students may take challenges set by industry instead of elective courses. The traineeship and thesis are carried out in close collaboration with companies working in the circular and bio economy, and Erasmus+ mobility is also possible.
Career paths
The department describes technical and managerial roles in research, innovation, production and the evaluation of chemical products, processes and materials. After the state qualification exam, graduates can join the professional register of chemists and physicists. Typical employers include:
- Chemical, biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies
- Recycling and waste treatment plants
- Public and private analysis laboratories and plant design companies
- Universities, research organisations and industrial R&D laboratories
- Public bodies that control the environment and health
Fees and scholarships
You enrol and pay fees at Federico II, which sets contributions by family income. Its 2026/27 fee simulator lists foreign students from non-EU countries among those fully exempt from contributions, with a regional tax of €130, €151 or €173 (by ISEE) and €16 stamp duty still due. The Campania body ADISURC runs income-based scholarships. This programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
Every applicant first fills in the course's internal selection form, uploading a single PDF with CV, bachelor's certificate, transcripts, passport, English certificate, motivation letter and interview slides. For 2026/27, selections opened on 1 March 2026. After a positive online interview, the pre-enrolment letter is uploaded to Universitaly. Applicants who need a visa must also complete their Universitaly application, choosing Federico II and their Italian consulate, before the deadline, then apply for a study visa.
