Milan's Computer Science master asks for a computer science bachelor's (class L-31), a degree with at least 48 credits in computer science or computer engineering and 12 in mathematics, or an equivalent foreign degree. There is no entrance test: the admission board reviews your exams and may hold an interview, and you need English at B2 to graduate. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]
Degree and credit requirements
The programme requires a first degree worth 180 credits. You can be admitted with one of the following: [2]
- A degree in class L-31, Computer Science and Technology, or the matching class of the older Italian system.
- A degree in another class with at least 48 credits in computer science or computer engineering (sectors INF/01 or ING-INF/05) and at least 12 credits in mathematics (MAT/01 to MAT/09).
- A qualification obtained abroad that the university recognises as suitable, with skills and knowledge equivalent to these requirements.
Missing credits must be made up before the assessment, by attending and passing exams from the university's degrees in Computer Science, Computer Science for Media Communications, Sound and Music Computing, or Computer Systems and Network Security. [2]
What this means for your transcript
Credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit as Italian CFU, and the board looks at your subjects and syllabi, not only your totals. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science, IT or Computer Engineering, or a B.Sc. in Computer Science, with programming, algorithms, systems and at least two mathematics courses on the transcript.
- Check carefully: a BCA or B.Sc. IT, which is strong in computing but may hold fewer than 12 mathematics credits, and a B.Tech in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, which may fall short of the 48 computing credits.
- Often short: a B.Sc. in Mathematics or Physics without a large computing block, and a B.Com, BBA or BA.
English
The programme rules set no English level for admission, but you must prove English at B2 to graduate. You can do this with an accepted certificate issued no more than three years earlier, or by taking the university language centre's placement test between October and January of your first year. [2]
For 2026/27, non-EU visa applicants also had to upload to Universitaly a B2 certificate in English or Italian accepted by the university, or a medium of instruction (MOI) certificate. Native speakers of English and Italian were exempt. [4]
On the university's list, B2 corresponds to IELTS 5.5 to 6.5, TOEFL iBT 72 to 94, PTE Academic 59 to 75 or Cambridge B2 First. Certificates must cover all four skills, and TOEFL results are valid for two years. [5]
Selection
Admission is open with an entry requirements check, and there is no entrance test. The admission board evaluates your previous university career from your degree certificate with grade, your list of exams with grades and credits, and your course syllabi. It judges your preparation on your results in the computing and mathematics exams named in the requirements. If these do not show full preparation, you must also pass an individual interview. [1][2]

2026/27 deadlines
For 2026/27, non-EU citizens applying for a visa had to submit the admission application between 22 January and 30 April 2026. Other applicants can apply until 30 October 2026. Admitted students enrol between 5 May 2026 and 15 January 2027, and applicants had to graduate by 31 December 2026. [1]

Documents and non-EU steps
Applicants with a foreign degree apply on the university's international platform and pay a €30 fee by the deadline. You upload your bachelor's degree or degree-awarding certificate, a Diploma Supplement or a transcript showing courses, marks, credits and the grading system, and your passport. Documents are accepted in Italian, English, French, German or Spanish. The application cannot be changed once submitted. [1]
- Non-EU visa applicants complete Universitaly pre-enrolment for one university and one programme. [4]
- At enrolment you provide your bachelor's degree legalised or apostilled, your high school diploma, a Statement of Comparability from CIMEA or a declaration of value from the Italian embassy, an Italian tax code and, for non-EU citizens, your residence permit or the receipt of its application. [1]
- For 2026/27 these documents were due by 30 November 2026, and admission stays provisional until they are checked. [1]

About the programme
Computer Science is a two-year master's degree in class LM-18, run by the Department of Computer Science "Giovanni degli Antoni" of the University of Milan, with teaching based at Via Celoria 18 in Milan. The degree is taught in Italian and English, and the university's admissions portal states that you can opt for an entirely English-taught curriculum. In practice, you build that English-taught study plan by choosing English units, which run in all three teaching periods.
The programme gives advanced training in the theory and methods of computer science and in its applied areas, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analysis, distributed systems and human-computer interaction. The year runs in three four-month periods, and attendance is strongly recommended for courses and labs. Beyond the chosen units, the plan includes 12 ECTS of free-choice credits, a compulsory 3 ECTS English B2 proficiency activity and a final thesis worth 39 ECTS, which can be written and defended in English or Italian under a supervisor. Erasmus+ exchanges are open with more than 50 partner universities across Europe, typically for about five months and 30 ECTS.

A student whose family income and assets are abroad pays a fixed second instalment set by country group: €256 in Group A, which includes countries like India, Pakistan and Nigeria, €1,164 in Group B and €4,101.12 in Group C, on top of a first instalment from €146.
