Entry requirements

Detailed entry requirements

Computer Science and Engineering admission requires a suitable prior degree, the programme’s curricular and preparation checks, and the applicable language evidence. The course-specific details below come from its 2026/27 regulation; central foreign-degree instructions and the newer 2027/28 language table are labelled separately.

Applicant-specific academic thresholds

  • For the specified Polimi Computer Science and Engineering bachelor’s route, the direct condition includes 105 CFU with weighted average at least 25/30 by the stated second-year autumn session and graduation within the fourth academic year.
  • Otherwise that Polimi programme route uses weighted average ≥ 21 + min(years of study − 3, 3), with half-years counted as defined. An average at least 24/30 therefore satisfies the listed grade condition independently of a longer duration, while other requirements still apply.
  • Candidates from another Italian institution or a different Polimi programme are not admitted below 24/30; above that threshold the commission still decides from the overall curriculum.
  • For graduates of non-Italian institutions, the regulation states that the GPA/graduation threshold is defined annually. The Polimi 21/30 route and the other-Italian 24/30 figure do not apply automatically to an overseas degree.

Curriculum review and application requirements

  • The commission checks adequate personal preparation and coherence with the master’s programme. It can impose choices within the 120-credit study plan or preliminary credits to obtain before matriculation.
  • For the specified Polimi route, a prior internship longer than 5 CFU can result in additional preliminary credits under the regulation’s conditions. Automatic satisfaction of a grade criterion does not automatically validate every earlier course.
  • Every candidate must submit the admission application within the university’s specified procedures and deadlines, including candidates who meet a direct-admission condition.
  • Language requirements remain compulsory. The regulation warns that grade thresholds may increase in later years and separately identifies the 2028/29 admission-model change.

Foreign-degree qualification, grades and recognition

  • The foreign-qualification route requires a recognised university-level bachelor’s degree giving access to second-cycle study, with subjects closely related to this master. Pending students may be evaluated, but the qualification must be obtained before final enrolment under the applicable procedure.
  • The International Admissions Office applies strict country-specific qualification and CGPA requirements. Examples on the current page include India 70/100, China 80%, Bangladesh and Pakistan 3.3/4, and Iran 15.5/20. These are country-specific application thresholds, not a single score applicable to every applicant. We check the complete requirements for the country awarding your degree.
  • Final recognition evidence is separate from a positive academic evaluation. The university may request a Declaration of Value or CIMEA evidence, and the applicable final-enrolment qualification checks still have to be satisfied.

English evidence and applicable academic year

  • English evidence is required on the foreign-degree master’s route. The currently published certificate table is explicitly updated for 2027/28, while the course regulation cited here is for 2026/27. We match the certificate rule and deadline to the intake you are applying for.
  • The current table includes IELTS Academic or General Training 6, PTE Academic 59 and LanguageCert ESOL B2 Communicator with four skills. TOEFL iBT/Home Edition requires 78 for tests through 20 January 2026 or 4.5 on the new scale for tests from 21 January 2026. Certificates expired under the issuer’s rules are not accepted.
  • The stated English-medium exemption requires a bachelor’s of at least three years and university-certified evidence that at least 75% of its courses were taught in English. A general claim of fluency does not satisfy this documentary route.
  • Central international guidance permits language evidence after initial application/evaluation, but requires it for the admission letter, merit-scholarship consideration, visa process and enrolment. The applicable route’s deadline remains mandatory.
  • An Italian-taught or mixed Italian/English route also requires the stated B2 Italian evidence under central foreign-degree guidance, with the specified Italian-citizenship exemption. We confirm your programme language and track before checking this condition.

Documents to prepare for the foreign-degree application

  • The application needs the bachelor’s qualification or permitted final-year/provisional document, official transcript, official CGPA/grading-scale evidence and a CV of no more than two pages. The transcript or diploma can serve as the GPA statement if it contains all required information.
  • Academic documents are accepted in Italian, English, French or Spanish. Other languages require the specified official translation. Use legible scans of original documents with the required stamps/signatures or accepted official verification evidence.
  • GRE evidence is optional in the general international engineering application and has no centrally specified minimum score. A motivation letter, recommendation and detailed course descriptions can provide additional evidence; they do not replace mandatory academic documents.
  • We complete the dossier before the application fee is paid: the admissions instructions say uploaded documents cannot be changed or supplemented after payment. Incomplete or unpaid applications are not processed. A successful evaluation still needs the subsequent enrolment and recognition steps.

About the programme

Computer Science and Engineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale) in class LM-32, Computer Systems Engineering, worth 120 ECTS. It is taught in English by the School of Industrial and Information Engineering at the Milano Leonardo campus.

The degree board presents the Politecnico as a public scientific and technological university that trains software engineers, with a long focus on quality and innovation in teaching and research and close ties to industry through experimental research and technology transfer. The degree suits graduates in computer engineering or computer science who want to go deeper into software, systems or artificial intelligence.

What you will study

You choose one of three tracks: Computer Science and Engineering; ICT Engineering, Business and Innovation; or Artificial Intelligence. All three share Software Engineering 2 and Foundations of Operations Research in the first semester, then add track units and a large set of second-year electives. Units in the 2026/27 course list include:

  • Formal Languages and Compilers
  • Data Bases 2
  • Advanced Computer Architectures
  • Computer Security
  • Computing Infrastructures
  • Foundations of Artificial Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence)
  • Systems and Methods for Big and Unstructured Data (Artificial Intelligence)
  • Business Information Systems (ICT Engineering, Business and Innovation)

How the programme is taught

The second year is built mostly from electives, including Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Reinforcement Learning, Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing. The ICT Engineering, Business and Innovation track adds units such as Digital Business, Process and Service Design and Leadership and Innovation. The courses of the three tracks are taught in English; a small number of Italian-taught units appear in the wider course list.

Career paths

The degree trains software and computer engineers. The three tracks lead towards different kinds of work:

  • Software design, architecture and engineering
  • Data management, databases and computing infrastructures
  • Cybersecurity
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis
  • ICT innovation, digital business and information systems in companies

Fees and scholarships

Tuition for this degree follows Politecnico di Milano's fee regulation for each academic year, and we check the current rules before you enrol. The DSU right-to-study scholarship is managed by the university itself, and eligible students who meet the merit and financial-need conditions can apply; the Politecnico decides the awards.

How to apply from outside the EU

Non-EU students with a foreign bachelor's apply through the university's international admissions route. The rules for foreign qualifications require a degree giving access to EQF level 7, subjects relevant to computer science and engineering, and a grade average above the minimum for your country. You need an English certificate, unless your university certifies that at least 75% of your three-year bachelor's was taught in English.

After admission we complete the Universitaly pre-enrolment, and you apply for a type D study visa. A Diploma Supplement, declaration of value or CIMEA statement is required before enrolment.

How ApplyAZ helps

ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.

For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:

  • We check your transcript against PoliMi's entry rules for this programme.
  • We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
  • We prepare and submit your online application to the International Admissions Office and Universitaly pre-enrolment.
  • We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your Politecnico di Milano DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
  • We prepare your visa file.

With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).

Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.

Questions and answers

Does the Polimi 21/30 route apply to foreign degrees?

No. For graduates of non-Italian institutions, the GPA threshold is defined each year, and the International Admissions Office applies country-specific CGPA requirements, such as 70/100 for Indian degrees. [1, 2]

What is the other-Italian background threshold?

At least 24/30. Above that threshold, the commission still decides from your overall curriculum. [1]

Does meeting a grade condition settle admission?

No. Curriculum, language, application and enrolment requirements still apply. [1]

Can the commission assign extra credits?

Yes, including preliminary credits before matriculation or obligations within the study plan. [1]

Must direct-route candidates still apply?

Yes. Every candidate must follow the application procedure and deadlines. [1]

Can the published thresholds change in future years?

Yes. The regulation warns that grade thresholds may increase in later years and flags a change to the admission model from 2028/29. [1]

Can someone handle my whole application to Computer Science and Engineering at PoliMi?

Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your transcript against PoliMi's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the Politecnico di Milano DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students.
