Single-cycle Master in Medicine and Surgery at University of Bari Aldo Moro

About the programme

Medicine and Surgery, known as the Bari English Medical Curriculum (BEMC), is a six-year single-cycle degree in class LM-41, worth 360 ECTS and taught in English. It belongs to the Interdisciplinary Department of Medicine within the School of Medicine of the University of Bari Aldo Moro, and teaching takes place at the Policlinico di Bari university hospital.

Places are limited and set each year by national decree. For 2026/27, Bari offered 8 places for non-EU applicants not living in Italy, 89 for EU and non-EU applicants resident in Italy, and 3 for students on the Marco Polo project. It suits students who want to train as doctors in English at a large hospital campus in southern Italy.

What you will study

The course is organised in 12 semesters and 36 integrated courses, with at least 60 credits in the basic sciences. Units in the 2025/26 syllabus list include:

• Year 1: Human Histology and Embryology, Physics and Medical Statistics, Applied and Molecular Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry
• Year 2: Human Anatomy, Microbiology and Parasitology, Human Sciences, Clinical Methodology
• Year 3: Human Physiology, General Pathology and Pathophysiology, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Diseases
• Year 4: Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Medicine and Surgery of the Sense Organs, Medical-Surgical Specialties
• Year 5: Neurological Sciences, Pharmacology, Radiology, Hygiene, Forensic and Occupational Medicine, Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Psychiatry
• Year 6: clinical traineeships

How the programme is taught

Each credit equals 25 hours of student work. Professional training credits are delivered as 20 hours of guided practice in small groups, in the hospital and in local health services, plus 5 hours of individual work. You also earn 8 elective credits from year one through seminars, conferences, specific courses and clinical placements.

Curricular traineeships cover medical, surgical and general practice settings, and the course publishes Erasmus+ mobility calls for study abroad.

Career paths

The LM-41 degree is the Italian route to becoming a medical doctor. The course pages do not publish a separate careers section; graduates typically move on to clinical practice under the professional registration rules of the country where they want to work, to postgraduate specialisation schools, or to research and PhD programmes.

Fees and scholarships

Fees follow UniBa's 2026/27 contribution regulation. Non-EU students whose family income and assets are only abroad pay a fixed yearly contribution by country group, while those with income or assets in Italy are assessed on ISEE or ISEE parificato, with full exemption up to €26,000. An ADISU Puglia scholarship, when awarded, also brings a full exemption, so the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.

How to apply from outside the EU

Entry depends on the national admission test and a separate ranking for non-EU applicants living abroad. For 2026/27, registration ran on Universitaly from 26 August to 15:00 on 9 September 2026, and the test took place on 29 September 2026, with Bari as one of the venues.

You also request a pre-evaluation of your diploma on apply.uniba.it (€30 evaluation fee), then pre-enrol on Universitaly for your type D study visa. The 2027/28 call is not out yet.
