School-leaving requirement
To sit the test and enrol, you need one of these: [1]
- An Italian upper secondary diploma or an equivalent qualification.
- A secondary school qualification from outside Italy, obtained after at least 12 years of schooling, with a pass in the last two years, that gives access to university in the country where it was issued.
Where your country requires an academic suitability test for university entry, you must show that you passed it. School systems of fewer than 12 years follow the Ministry's rules for foreign qualifications. [1]
What this means for your school results
Your school marks do not rank you: places follow your IMAT score, and your qualification only has to meet the rule above. As a guide, based on that rule:
- Usually a fit: a Class 12 or Higher Secondary certificate from India, an HSSC or FSc from Pakistan, an HSC from Bangladesh, GCE A levels from Sri Lanka, or British A levels, completed after 12 or more years of schooling and giving access to university at home.
- Check carefully: qualifications from countries where university entry also needs a national academic suitability test, and any record without a pass in each of the last two school years.
- Often short: school systems of fewer than 12 years without the extra qualification the Ministry requires, or a certificate that does not give access to university in its own country.
The IMAT covers biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, so a science stream gives you the closest preparation. [1]
English
The 2026/27 call does not set a minimum English level for admission. When you register for the IMAT, you declare whether you hold one of the English certificates listed by the Ministry, and at least one school year taught in English counts as holding one. The certificate is one of the tie-breakers in the ranking. [1]
The IMAT admission test
The IMAT is the same in every venue, in Italy and abroad. For 2026/27 it had 60 multiple-choice questions with five options each, to be answered in 100 minutes: [1]
- 23 on biology
- 15 on chemistry
- 13 on physics and mathematics
- 5 on logical reasoning
- 4 on reading skills and knowledge from your studies
Each correct answer earns 1.5 points, each wrong answer loses 0.4 and an omitted answer scores 0, for a maximum of 90. Ties are broken first by the biology score, then chemistry, physics and mathematics, logical reasoning and reading. Foreign venues for 2026/27 included India, Pakistan, Dubai in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK and the USA. [1]
Places, minimum score and ranking
For 2026/27 the call listed 80 provisional places at the Torrette di Ancona teaching centre: 30 for EU citizens and non-EU citizens treated as EU, such as legal residents of Italy, and 50 for non-EU applicants living abroad. [1]
- Non-EU applicants living abroad: ranked by Univpm on a separate list. A score of at least 0 points makes you eligible, but you must answer at least one question to be ranked.
- EU and equivalent candidates: ranked nationally, with a minimum of 20 points.
Admitted students who score under 20% correct answers in biology, chemistry, or physics and mathematics receive additional learning requirements (OFA), met through intensive courses during the first year. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
- 26 August to 9 September 2026 (15:00 Italian time): IMAT registration on Universitaly, payment of the test fee and requests for disability or SLD support.
- 9 September 2026: deadline for non-EU applicants living abroad to file Universitaly pre-enrolment and apply for the study visa, and for the optional qualification evaluation.
- 29 September 2026: the IMAT.
- 8 October 2026: scores published on Universitaly.
- 26 October 2026: rankings published, including Univpm's ranking for non-EU applicants living abroad.
- 26 October to 4 November 2026: enrolment for non-EU applicants living abroad who win a place in their quota.

Non-EU applicants living abroad
Non-EU applicants living abroad compete only for their reserved places. They must file a pre-enrolment application on Universitaly and apply for a student visa by the IMAT registration deadline. [1]
With a qualification from outside Italy, you can also request a qualification evaluation on Univpm's international admissions platform by the same date. It does not replace Universitaly pre-enrolment. You sit the test and can enrol on condition until you present your residence permit and Univpm confirms that your study documents are valid. Enrolment is online through Univpm's student portal. [1]

About the programme
Medicine and Surgery, presented by Univpm as Medicine and Technology (MedTech), is a six-year single-cycle degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-41) worth 360 ECTS. It is run by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona and taught entirely in English, with restricted access through a national admission test.
The course sets out to train a new kind of doctor by joining medical training with biomedical engineering, both long established at Univpm. Graduates should be expert users of technology in clinical medicine and research, and able to help design new tools in areas such as genomics, bioinformatics, big data, artificial intelligence and remote care. It suits science-minded school leavers who want a full medical degree with a strong technical side.

The first three years integrate medicine with bioengineering; the last three focus on clinical training and professional activities, applying the integrated approach to practice. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

- Organ system diseases, clinical neurosciences, oncology, radiology and specialty clinics
- Year 6 clinical medicine and surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, geriatrics, and medical and surgical emergencies
How the programme is taught
Teaching relies on simulators, procedural software, skills labs and bioengineering laboratories, including virtual reality. Professional activities run through every year and grow in the clinical years; year 6 includes a 15 ECTS practical evaluation internship and a 13 ECTS final exam. Lectures are held on site, with online access only for students still waiting for their visa. [2] Attendance at classes and practical activities is compulsory. [1]
Students can also take 30 optional credits on top of the 360 required. Those who complete them can ask, at the end of the six years, for the three-year degree in Biomedical Engineering as well.

Fees and scholarships
Univpm charges by nationality and income. For 2026/27 the call set the same first instalment for every student, made up of the regional tax and a revenue stamp. [1] Under its international FAQ, non-EU citizens of non-OECD countries pay only that first instalment in the first year, and keep a reduced rate later if they earn enough credits. Citizens of OECD countries submit an ISEE parificato or pay the course maximum. Income-based grants come from ERDIS Marche, the regional agency, and the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.

Entry is through the IMAT, the national admission test for medicine in English. For 2026/27 the call offered 80 provisional places: 30 for EU citizens and non-EU citizens treated as EU, and 50 for non-EU applicants living abroad. IMAT registration and the test fee on Universitaly ran from 26 August to 9 September 2026, and by the same date non-EU applicants living abroad also had to file their Universitaly pre-enrolment and apply for the study visa.
