Sapienza's English-taught Dentistry and Dental Prosthodontics degree asks for a secondary school diploma after at least 12 years of schooling that gives access to university in your country, and a place in the ranking of the national English-language admission test (IMAT), with separate places and a separate ranking for non-EU applicants living abroad. School-leaving requirement
For 2026/27, every candidate needed a secondary school diploma obtained, or to be obtained, in 2026. Non-EU applicants living abroad also needed Universitaly pre-enrolment for the study visa. [1]
- Length of schooling: the diploma must come after at least 12 years of schooling and give access to first-level university study in the country that issued it. [5]
- Shorter school systems: after 11 years you also need a certificate showing you passed the first year of university, and after 10 years the first two years. A related one- or two-year post-secondary qualification, or an accredited Foundation Year for one missing year, can be used instead. [5]
- Country rules: Sapienza lists the accepted school qualifications by country, and you submit your marksheets with the diploma. [2]

What this means for your school results
As a guide, based on the rule above and Sapienza's country list: [2]
- Usually a fit: a Class 12 certificate from India (CBSE AISSCE, CISCE ISC, NIOS Senior Secondary, or a state board Higher Secondary or Intermediate certificate), a Pakistani HSSC or Intermediate certificate, or a Bangladeshi Higher Secondary Certificate.
- Check carefully: Sri Lankan A levels need at least an S grade in three subjects, not counting General English, and at least 30% in the Common General Test. UK A levels need at least three subjects relevant to the degree at grade E or above. A Class 10 certificate plus a three-year diploma only counts if the diploma field is relevant to dentistry.
- Often short: a school system of fewer than 12 years without the extra university year or Foundation Year described above.
The call lists no required school subjects, but the test is weighted to science: 51 of its 60 questions are biology, chemistry, physics and maths. We check your certificate against Sapienza's list before you register. [1][2]
English
The call sets no minimum English certificate for entry, but every test question is in English. [1]
English certificates at B2 or above, held by the 9 September 2026 registration deadline and declared when you register, only break ties between equal scores. The accepted list includes IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 for B2 and 7.0 to 8.0 for C1, TOEFL 87 to 109 for B2 and 110 to 120 for C1, and Cambridge First, Advanced and Proficiency. Candidates who spent at least one school year at an English-medium school are treated as holding a certificate. [1]
Admission test
The national admission test is set by the Ministry of University and Research and is the same across Italy. For 2026/27 it took place in person on 29 September 2026, at Sapienza and at test centres abroad. [1]
- Format: 60 multiple-choice questions with five options, in 100 minutes: 4 on reading skills and knowledge, 5 on logical reasoning and problems, 23 on biology, 15 on chemistry and 13 on physics and maths.
- Scoring: 1.5 points for a correct answer, 0 for a blank and minus 0.4 for a wrong answer. Ties are broken by the biology, chemistry, physics and maths, logic and reading scores in that order, then by an English certificate.
- Minimum score: non-EU applicants living abroad enter the ranking with any score above zero. EU and equivalent candidates need at least 20.
- Places for 2026/27: 6 for non-EU applicants living abroad and 19 for EU and equivalent candidates. Sapienza draws up the non-EU ranking and publishes it on the course page.
- Test countries for 2026/27: they included India, Pakistan, the UAE (Dubai), Saudi Arabia, the UK, the USA, Turkey and Kenya, as well as 17 Italian universities. If you sit the test in Italy, your first-choice location must be the university of your Universitaly pre-enrolment.
Additional learning requirements (OFA)
If you win a place with a total below 30, you are given an OFA in biology if you scored under 8.6 of the 34.5 available, and in chemistry if you scored under 5.6 of 22.5. You clear it by passing the first-year exam in that subject or a remedial test, with support courses provided. An OFA not cleared in the first year means repeating the first year, without access to later-year exams. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
These dates come from the 2026/27 call. The 2027/28 call sets the new dates. [1]
- Universitaly pre-enrolment for the visa: by 30 June 2026 for non-EU applicants living abroad.
- Test registration and fee: 26 August to 9 September 2026, 3 pm Italian time, on Universitaly.
- Test: 29 September 2026.
- Results: scores on 8 October 2026, answer sheets on 19 October 2026 and the national merit ranking on 26 October 2026, with the next update on 3 November 2026.
- Enrolment: within four working days of each ranking if you are Assigned, and confirmation of interest within five days to stay in the ranking.
Documents and non-EU steps
Universitaly pre-enrolment is required for the study visa but does not by itself give admission. You complete enrolment by the ranking deadline. Holders of a foreign school diploma also send Sapienza's international student office the required documents within the same deadline. [1]

- your original school diploma with a sworn translation, which is not needed into Italian if the diploma was issued in English
- for countries in the ARDI database, the ARDI statement of correspondence plus a CIMEA Statement of Verification or legalisation
- for other countries, CIMEA Statements of Comparability and Verification, or a declaration of value from the Italian mission with legalisation
- proof that you applied for the residence permit within eight days of arriving in Italy
Within 60 days of paying the first instalment, you also need a Mantoux tuberculin test and the hepatitis B vaccination. [1][5]

About the programme
Dentistry and Dental Prosthodontics (Odontoiatria e protesi dentaria) is a six-year single-cycle master's degree in class LM-46, worth 360 ECTS and taught entirely in English. It belongs to Sapienza's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and is based in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Sciences in Rome. Enrolment is capped by Italian law, in line with EU standards, and entry is by the IMAT admission test. [3]
The course includes at least 5,000 hours of theoretical and practical teaching. Teaching in English also opens the course to teachers from other EU countries and from international dental institutions. How the programme is taught
Professional teaching takes place in the Dental Clinic and at the George Eastman Hospital, part of the Head-Neck Department of the Umberto I Polyclinic. Students build their professional skills through Practical Evaluative Internships (PEI) and a Practical Evaluative Test (PET). The sixth year is almost entirely clinical and problem-solving work, to check clinical and communication skills.
After the PET, the final degree exam qualifies graduates to practise dentistry under Law 163/2021. Erasmus+ and internships give chances to train abroad.
Career paths
Graduates can practise as dentists with the right of establishment in EU countries. The course catalogue lists:

Students who earn income abroad and cannot file an Italian ISEE pay a flat yearly fee by country band under the 2026/27 rules, with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nigeria in the lowest band. Non-EU applicants living abroad first complete Universitaly pre-enrolment for the study visa (by 30 June 2026 in the 2026/27 cycle), then register and pay for the test on Universitaly, and Sapienza draws up a separate ranking for them.
