Genoa's Environmental Engineering master gives direct access to Italian civil, environmental or industrial engineering graduates and to foreign degrees recognised as suitable. Other applicants need at least 30 credits in maths, physics and chemistry and 12 in listed engineering or earth science areas. Degree and credit rule
The 2026/27 regulations give two routes in. [1]
- Direct access: an Italian bachelor's in civil and environmental engineering (class L-7) or industrial engineering (class L-9), or a qualification from abroad recognised as suitable.
- Credit route: any Italian bachelor's or master's degree, or a recognised foreign qualification, with at least 30 ECTS in maths, physics and chemistry and at least 12 ECTS in these areas: hydraulics (ICAR/01), hydraulic and coastal works and hydrology (ICAR/02), sanitary and environmental engineering (ICAR/03), geotechnics (ICAR/07), structural mechanics and structural engineering (ICAR/08, ICAR/09), chemical engineering and chemical plants (ING-IND/24, ING-IND/25), earth and atmosphere physics (FIS/06), physical geography and geomorphology (GEO/04) and applied geophysics (GEO/11).
For qualifications from abroad, the degree board decides suitability from your degree, the exams you passed and your CV. If you fall short, the board lists the credits or units you must add before you apply again. [1]
What this means for your transcript
Italian ECTS and the credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit, and Genoa compares your subjects, not just your total. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering. These sit close to the Italian civil, environmental and industrial engineering classes, and usually include maths, physics and chemistry plus hydraulics, geotechnics, structural or chemical engineering units.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical, Electrical or Agricultural Engineering, or a B.Sc. in Environmental Science, Geology or Physics. These can meet the 30 science credits but may hold fewer than 12 credits in the listed areas.
- Often short: a BCA, a B.Sc. in Computer Science or IT, a B.Sc. in Biology, a B.Com, BBA or BA, where few units fall in the listed science or engineering areas.

Academic results and selection
If you meet the degree rule, your personal preparation is checked. For a qualification from abroad, a committee of the degree board looks at: [1]
- Your academic record, such as your average, class rank or GPA.
- The quality of the university that awarded your first degree.
- An interview or test, if needed.
The interview lasts up to 15 minutes. You present your bachelor's thesis and answer questions on the core subjects of your degree, your academic record and your motivation. The committee assesses motivation, scientific competence and growth potential, and its decision is final. Holders of an Italian bachelor's pass automatically with a final mark of at least 92/110, and otherwise take a public interview. [1]
For 2026/27, visa applicants needed a minimum CGPA of 80% in the UniGeApply selection, with no remote interview, no test and no extra documents. [2]
English and Italian
English at CEFR level B2, meaning fluent written and spoken English, including the vocabulary of the subject. You can show it in one of these ways: [1]
- A B2 English exam passed in your bachelor's, shown on your transcript or a certificate. If it was not at UniGe, the certificate must describe the exam and its content.
- A B2, C1 or C2 certificate on UniGe's list of accepted certifications.
- An official statement from your university that your bachelor's was taught fully in English.
- Otherwise, the B2 English test run by the Polytechnic School.
The regulations do not list specific test scores. In the 2026/27 UniGeApply selection, a B2 certificate or a medium of instruction certificate was accepted, and Italian was not required for entry. [2] Once enrolled, students with a qualification from abroad must gain basic Italian through a unit in the study plan. The English text of the regulations adds that if you have not passed this exam by the deadline for the second-year study plan, you cannot submit that plan and must re-enrol in the first year. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
For 2026/27, non-EU visa applicants applied on UniGeApply from 26 November 2025 to 20 March 2026, and outcomes were due by 22 May 2026. Accepted students then applied on Universitaly, with that window expected to close in June 2026. [3] Applicants still finishing their degree had to complete it by 15 August 2026. [2]
The 2027/28 dates are not yet published, and the next call sets them.

About the programme
Environmental Engineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-35) worth 120 ECTS. It is taught in English and in person in Genoa by the Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering (DICCA), with lectures at Villa Cambiaso and the Opera Pia campus. The course code is 11925, following the earlier code 10720. [1][4]
The degree is built for engineers with a broad technical base who want to work on environmental problems as a whole. It combines natural processes, chemical and environmental processes, and the impact and management of productive activities, all framed within ecosystem-based management (EBM). Italian bachelor's degrees in civil and environmental engineering (L-7) or industrial engineering (L-9) give direct access, so it suits graduates in civil, environmental, chemical or industrial engineering. You choose between two curricula. Blue Engineering focuses on the ocean and coastal environment and its management, while Green Engineering focuses on land and watershed management. [4] Both cover how pollutants disperse in air, water and porous media, the risks of extreme natural events and numerical modelling of environmental processes. Two further curricula, Coastal Environmental Engineering and Shore Management, are for students on the COMEM+ double-degree programme in Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management. How the programme is taught
Teaching pairs the study of basic processes with experimental laboratories and field applications, and several units include practical tests to reinforce what you learn. The course ends with a traineeship and a final thesis. [4] In the Blue and Green curricula the traineeship is worth 5 ECTS and the thesis 18 ECTS. The traineeship can be done from the second year in DICCA labs, other universities, research centres, companies or public bodies, and the thesis is written in English. Fees and scholarships
At UniGe the university contribution follows family income (ISEE-U), and students with family income abroad submit an ISEE-U parificato. In 2026/27 a first-year, full-time student with an ISEE-U up to €13,000 was exempt from the contribution. Students who win an ALiSEO grant pay only the stamp duty, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
