Bioengineering is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's degree in biomedical engineering (LM-21) taught in English by DIBRIS at the University of Genoa, with tracks in neuroengineering and engineering for personalised medicine. Fees follow family income, so it can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in information engineering (Italian class L-8) or an equivalent foreign degree; only engineering bachelors are accepted in the non-EU pre-selection.
- At least 36 credits in the basic subjects of class L-8 and 45 credits in its core areas, such as automation, electronic, computer, telecommunications or electronic and computer bioengineering.
- English at B2 level or a medium-of-instruction (MOI) certificate.
- For the 2026/27 non-EU pre-selection: a minimum CGPA of 75%, with no remote interview.

About the programme
Bioengineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-21, biomedical engineering) worth 120 ECTS and taught in English at the University of Genoa. It is run by DIBRIS, the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering, with lecture rooms, labs and staff offices in Via all'Opera Pia in Genoa. UniGe's biomedical engineering degree was, with that of Politecnico di Milano, the first set up in Italy, in 1995.
The course trains versatile professionals for research and innovation in the medical and biological field, which needs cross-disciplinary skills. It is aimed at graduates in biomedical engineering or other industrial and information engineering fields; for non-EU applicants the pre-selection accepts engineering bachelors only.
What you will study
You learn to describe, simulate and analyse systems and signals of medical and biological interest, study biomaterials and devices for diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation, and look at the molecular, cellular and cognitive bases of perception and behaviour. The course has two tracks with two curricula each:
- Neuroengineering track: Neuroengineering and Neurotechnologies
- Neuroengineering track: Rehabilitation Engineering and Interaction Technologies
- Personalised Medicine track: Materials and Devices for Personalised Medicine
- Personalised Medicine track: Information and Communication Technologies for Personalised Medicine
Subject areas include biomedical instrumentation and bioimaging, motor control and rehabilitation engineering, tissue engineering, medical informatics, natural and artificial intelligent systems, and neuro-electronic interfaces and neuromorphic engineering.
How the programme is taught
Lectures are combined with lab work and projects, often with outside organisations, stays in research labs, health facilities and rehabilitation centres, and seminars by professionals. Almost the whole last semester is given to the master's thesis. The course reports that about 40% of students write their thesis in companies or research bodies outside the university, and about 25% of theses are carried out abroad.
Career paths
In industry, bioengineers develop medical and surgical devices, in-vitro diagnostic systems and health technologies, and many join start-ups or found their own. In hospitals, research institutes and rehabilitation centres they manage technical services and measurement labs. A significant share of graduates go on to a PhD.
Fees and scholarships
Tuition at UniGe is tied to family income. Students with family abroad obtain an ISEE-U parificato from an affiliated CAF; without any ISEE-U, the 2026/27 contribution for scientific-technical degrees is €3,300 a year. At the other end, a first-year student with an ISEE-U up to €13,000 pays only stamp duty and regional tax. With ALiSEO Liguria's regional scholarship as well, the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.

In 2026/27 Bioengineering took only engineering bachelors in its non-EU pre-selection, with a minimum CGPA of 75%, no remote interview and no extra documents.

For 2026/27 the visa applicants' session ran from 26 November 2025 to 20 March 2026, and one €30 payment covered up to two courses.
