Degree and credit rule
You need knowledge equal to the general learning goals of an Italian bachelor's in information engineering (class L-8). The regulations strictly require: [1]
- A bachelor's or master's degree from an Italian university, or an equivalent foreign qualification.
- At least 36 ECTS, or equivalent knowledge, in the subject areas listed as basic activities for class L-8 information engineering degrees.
- At least 45 ECTS, or equivalent knowledge, in the subject areas listed as core activities for class L-8, within automation engineering (ING-INF/04, ING-IND/13, ING-IND/32), biomedical engineering (ING-INF/06, ING-IND/34), electronic engineering (ING-INF/01, ING-INF/02, ING-INF/07), computer engineering (ING-INF/05) and telecommunications engineering (ING-INF/03).
UniGe bachelor's degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Electronic and Information Technology Engineering and Computer Engineering meet the rule automatically. For other degrees, the degree board checks the exams you passed, and can also consider extracurricular exams, internships and work experience. For degrees from abroad, it matches the courses you passed with the subject areas above. The requirements must be met and checked before enrolment. [1]
What this means for your transcript
Italian ECTS and the credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit, and Genoa compares your subjects, not just your total. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Instrumentation or Computer Science Engineering. These cover the electronic, computer, automation, telecommunications or biomedical areas that make up the 45-credit core block.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical, Chemical or Biotechnology Engineering. These are engineering degrees, but they may hold fewer than 45 credits in the listed core areas.
- Often short: a B.Sc. in Biology, Biotechnology or Physics, a BCA or a B.Sc. IT. In 2026/27 the non-EU pre-selection accepted engineering bachelors only, and these degrees rarely cover the core block. [2]

Academic results
Your personal preparation is judged on your bachelor's results. It is adequate if your weighted average grade is at least 22.5/30, or your CGPA is at least 75% of the maximum score at your university. For international students, the academic reputation of the awarding university is also taken into account, based on international rankings such as Webometrics. [1] For 2026/27, the non-EU pre-selection set a minimum CGPA of 75%. [2]

English at CEFR level B2 or higher, shown in one of these ways: [1]
- A certificate at B2 or higher from the university's list of recognised certificates, within the validity set by the certifying body.
- A bachelor's taught entirely in English, shown by an official document or a letter from your university.
- A bachelor's that included a certified B2 English exam, stated in the programme table or syllabus and shown on your transcript.
- Passing the B2 English test run by the Polytechnic School.
The regulations do not list specific test scores. In the 2026/27 UniGeApply selection, a B2 certificate or a medium of instruction certificate was accepted, and Italian was not required. [2] If your qualification is from outside Italy and you cannot show Italian, your study plan includes an Italian as a foreign language unit. Other students take a specialist English unit. [1]
Selection
The regulations do not set a written entrance test. For non-EU applicants living abroad with a foreign qualification, the online portal first checks that your documents are complete, that you meet the credit rule and that your English is sufficient. Applicants who pass then go through two stages: an evaluation of academic qualifications and an evaluation of the candidate. The outcome is admitted, admitted on condition of graduating, or not admitted. [1]
For 2026/27, visa applicants needed a minimum CGPA of 75% and an engineering bachelor's, with no remote interview, no test and no extra documents. [2] Each year the degree board sets a number of places reserved for non-EU citizens living abroad who need a visa. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
For 2026/27, non-EU visa applicants applied on UniGeApply from 26 November 2025 to 20 March 2026, and outcomes were due by 22 May 2026. Accepted students then applied on Universitaly, with that window expected to close in June 2026. [3] Applicants still finishing their bachelor's could be admitted on condition of graduating by 15 August 2026. [1][2]
The 2027/28 dates are not yet published, and the next call sets them.

About the programme
Bioengineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-21, biomedical engineering) worth 120 ECTS and taught in English at the University of Genoa. [1][4]
It is run by DIBRIS, the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering, with lecture rooms, labs and staff offices in Via all'Opera Pia in Genoa. [4]
UniGe's biomedical engineering degree was, with that of Politecnico di Milano, the first set up in Italy, in 1995. [4]
The course trains versatile professionals for research and innovation in the medical and biological field, which needs cross-disciplinary skills. It is aimed at graduates in biomedical engineering or other industrial and information engineering fields, and the course page says it is also open to graduates in mathematical, physical and natural sciences. [4] Every applicant must still meet the credit rule, and the 2026/27 non-EU pre-selection accepted engineering bachelors only. [1][2]
What you will study
You learn to describe, simulate and analyse systems and signals of medical and biological interest, study biomaterials and devices for diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation, and look at the molecular, cellular and cognitive bases of perception and behaviour.

Subject areas include biomedical instrumentation and bioimaging, motor control and rehabilitation engineering, tissue engineering, medical informatics, natural and artificial intelligent systems, and neuro-electronic interfaces and neuromorphic engineering.
How the programme is taught
Lectures are combined with lab work and projects, often with outside organisations, stays in research labs, health facilities and rehabilitation centres, and seminars by professionals. Almost the whole last semester is given to the master's thesis. [4] The thesis is worth 25 ECTS and is written and defended in English. Teaching is in English, attendance is strongly recommended and online delivery is capped at 10% of the course content. [1]
The course reports that about 40% of students write their thesis in companies or research bodies outside the university, and about 25% of theses are carried out abroad. [4] Thesis work abroad can earn up to 24 of the 25 thesis credits, at 4 ECTS per month spent abroad. [1]
Career paths
In industry, bioengineers develop medical and surgical devices, in-vitro diagnostic systems and health technologies, and many join start-ups or found their own. In hospitals, research institutes and rehabilitation centres they manage technical services and measurement labs.

Fees and scholarships
Tuition at UniGe is tied to family income. Students with family abroad obtain an ISEE-U parificato from an affiliated CAF. Without any ISEE-U, students pay the top annual rate for scientific-technical degrees.
At the other end, a first-year student with an ISEE-U up to €13,000 pays only stamp duty and regional tax. With ALiSEO Liguria's regional scholarship as well, the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
