About the programme
Electrical Engineering for Energy Transition is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-28) worth 120 ECTS, taught in English and in person in Genoa. It is run by DITEN, the Department of Naval, Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering, under course code 11955, and replaces UniGe's earlier Ingegneria Elettrica master (code 8731).
The degree looks at every part of the energy transition that involves electric energy, from generation to final use. It suits graduates in electrical, energy or mechanical engineering who want to work on renewables, grids and electric transport.
What you will study
Subjects range from renewable energy production, energy storage and power transmission and distribution to electric vehicles, trains and metro systems, electric propulsion, energy management, smart grids, smart cities, and control and automation of electric systems. You choose one of two curricula, Energy, Automation and Smart Grids or Sustainable Electric Mobility, and can shape your study plan. Units offered in 2026/27 include:
- Power Systems Analysis, and Electrical Power Systems Steady-State and Dynamics
- Renewable and Storage Design and Modeling
- Advanced Power Electronics for Electric Energy Applications and a Power Electronic Laboratory
- Electric and Hybrid Vehicles for Sustainable Mobility, and Guided Transport Systems
- Electric Mobility Infrastructures and Marine Power Systems
- Management and Control of Electric Energy Systems, and Cybersecurity for Electric Infrastructures
- Digital Electric Drives Control, Process Automation and Lighting Systems for the Smart City
- Machine Learning for Pattern Recognition and a traineeship
How the programme is taught
Students gain practical experience in department laboratories or at outside companies working in renewable energy, industrial automation and power electronics, using both simulated and real equipment. The course page also lists soft skills such as leadership, teamwork and problem solving among its learning goals, and an Italian language unit is available for international students.
Career paths
The course page names these outlets for graduates:
- Renewable energy and energy production and distribution
- Manufacturing and industrial automation
- Engineering companies and the freelance profession
- Managerial and technical-organisational roles
- Scientific research and industrial development
Fees and scholarships
Fees at UniGe follow household income. The 2026/27 bill combined €16 stamp duty, a regional tax of at least €120 and a university contribution based on ISEE-U (for income abroad, the ISEE-U parificato): nothing up to €13,000 and no more than €3,300 a year at the top. Students awarded an ALiSEO scholarship pay the €16 stamp duty only, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
For 2026/27 this course had the highest CGPA bar in UniGe's English-taught master's table: it accepted only engineering graduates, asked for at least 85% and held an interview during pre-selection, which also serves as the personal readiness check.
The process starts on UniGeApply, with a €30 fee covering up to two courses. The 2026/27 window for visa applicants closed on 20 March 2026, and the 2027/28 window is expected in November 2026. Successful applicants apply on Universitaly, pre-enrol on UniGe online services and request a type D study visa. After arrival you upload a legalised degree (or CIMEA verification) and a declaration of value, CIMEA statement or Diploma Supplement.
How ApplyAZ helps
If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
