Artificial Intelligence and Automation Engineering is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's degree (class LM-32) taught in English by the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Siena. Students choose Intelligent Systems or Robotics and Automation. Fees depend on family income, and the programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree of at least three years in information, industrial or civil engineering, physics, computer science or mathematics (Italian classes L-7, L-8, L-9, L-30, L-31 or L-35), or an equivalent foreign degree.
- Knowledge of mathematics, statistics, physics and information engineering, checked by the Teaching Committee.
- English at B2 level (CEFR): a recognised certificate, or an interview at the University Language Centre (CLA).
- Applicants with a foreign degree are assessed on their academic record plus a written and/or oral admission test.
- Application on apply.unisi.it with a €49.90 fee per programme (2026/27).
About the programme
Artificial Intelligence and Automation Engineering is a two-year laurea magistrale in class LM-32 (computer systems engineering), worth 120 ECTS and taught in English. It is run by the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics (DIISM) at the San Niccolò building, via Roma 56, in the centre of Siena.
The degree gives a strong scientific and technological grounding for complex engineering problems, with emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and automation. It suits graduates in information engineering, computer science, physics or mathematics who want to design intelligent, control and robotic systems.
What you will study
Students choose one of two curricula. Intelligent Systems centres on learning algorithms and large-scale data, while Robotics and Automation centres on control, identification and robot design. Course units in the 2026/27 study plan include:
- Machine Learning and Advanced Machine Learning
- Artificial Intelligence
- High Performance Computer Architecture and Big Data
- Digital Image Processing and Language Processing Technologies
- System Identification and Data Analysis
- Human-Centered Robotics and Industrial Robotics
- Advanced Control Systems
- Dynamic Programming and Reinforcement Learning
Both curricula share Discrete-Event Systems and Network Optimization in the first year.
How the programme is taught
The second year combines advanced courses with free-choice credits, a compulsory 6 ECTS traineeship and a final thesis worth 21 ECTS. The degree also offers a double degree option with the ESTIA School of Engineering in Bidart, France.
Career paths
Graduates work in industry, public companies, financial institutions and research centres with research and development divisions. The department lists roles such as:
- industrial automation and process control
- design of robotic systems
- data analysis and modelling of dynamical systems
- information systems with integrated AI
- hardware and software system design
- natural language interfaces and human-robot interaction
Graduates can also continue to a PhD in information engineering or sit the Italian state exam for the information engineering section of the engineers' register.
Fees and scholarships
Siena sets fees from the Italian ISEE and does not accept an ISEE parificato. Under the 2026/27 regulation, students without a valid ISEE pay the top rate scaled by a coefficient for their country of citizenship, with a floor of €500 a year, so students from countries like India pay €500 plus regional tax and stamp duty. DSU Toscana winners and eligible students are exempt, so the programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
You apply on apply.unisi.it, paying €49.90 per programme for 2026/27, with your degree, transcripts and B2 English proof. The Teaching Committee reviews your record and sets a written and/or oral admission test.
For 2026/27, applicants needing a visa had to apply by early May 2026. Once admitted, you complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and request a type D study visa. The 2027/28 dates are not published yet.
How ApplyAZ helps
If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
Questions and answers
Is the programme taught in English?
Yes. The two-year LM-32 master's is taught in English, and applicants need B2 English shown by a recognised certificate or a University Language Centre interview.

A degree of at least three years in information, industrial or civil engineering, computer science, physics or mathematics, or an equivalent foreign degree whose content matches these fields.
Is there an entrance test?
Applicants with a foreign degree are assessed on their academic record and a written and/or oral admission test on mathematics, statistics, physics and information engineering.
Which curricula can I choose?
Intelligent Systems, focused on machine learning, AI and big data, or Robotics and Automation, focused on control systems, robotics and reinforcement learning.
How much does it cost?
Without a valid Italian ISEE, the 2026/27 contribution depends on your country of citizenship and is at least €500 a year, plus regional tax and stamp duty. DSU Toscana winners and eligible students are exempt.
