Suitable bachelor’s degree and 80 eligible credits

The department requires a suitable bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology or Agricultural Sciences and a background with at least 80 ECTS across the identified subjects. The admission committee evaluates the degree, curriculum and specific preparation. A degree title, including a biological/agricultural title, does not remove this evaluation. [1]

The matrix sets both minima and maxima for the credits counted in each group. The sum must reach at least 80; the three positive minima alone total only 35. Groups whose minimum is zero are optional contributors within their stated ceilings, rather than six separate compulsory blocks. [1]

Interview threshold and English requirement

The committee assesses the applicant’s specific background. Applicants with a final bachelor’s grade below 99/110 are interviewed. The department gives 90/100 and CGPA 3.6 as its published illustrative equivalents, but the university determines the applicable comparison for a foreign grading system. These figures identify when an interview is required; they are not universal minimum admission grades. English must be at least B2. [1]

The application page emphasises genetics, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology and asks for passport, qualifying bachelor’s evidence, CV and accepted B2 certification. Its wording singles out agricultural science, while the current admission page also explicitly includes biotechnology. First call versus subsequent central notices

The programme page gives the initial 2026/27 PICA visa call deadline as 31 March 2026, with outcomes from 12 April. It says further opening depends on unfilled quota and a central notice. The current central page lists the subsequent general 29 May to 7 June 2026 round. Both windows have passed. The initial page’s conditional reopening is not a currently open application; we follow the actual course-eligible notice. [2, 3]

Visa-route English B2 and documented exemptions

For an English-taught master’s curriculum, non-EU applicants abroad requiring a visa must provide the accepted B2 evidence under the current central rules. The list includes IELTS 5.5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 72-94, LanguageCert International ESOL B2 Communicator with written and spoken exams, Gatehouse GA Level 1 Classic B2, PTE General Level 3, Trinity ISE II, Oxford Test of English B2 and the listed Cambridge IGCSE certification. These are the published B2 descriptors, rather than a requirement to score no higher than the top of a listed band. Oxford ELLT and Duolingo are not accepted. [4, 5]

The language page explicitly rejects a Medium of Instruction letter as a substitute certificate. The later study-document guidance separately recognises documented native-English status, an English-taught diploma/degree from an accredited institution in the EU, EEA or Schengen area, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US and other countries on the university's list, and an International Baccalaureate/GCE/GCSE. For applicants relying on those limited exemptions, we confirm the exemption with the office and prepare the required qualification evidence; an MOI from any institution is not a universal waiver. For an Italian-taught route, visa applicants need Italian B2 certification under the accepted CLIQ scheme or the required university language test. A course’s lower general English threshold does not replace the language requirement of the chosen teaching route and international category. [4, 5]

Complete foreign-degree and recognition file

The qualifying award must grant access to postgraduate study, correspond to a Bologna first-cycle/EQF level-6 qualification and be issued by an eligible higher-education institution. The file needs the degree in its original language, official transcript, CV, examination programmes/syllabi and requested recognition records. Translation into Italian is normally required, with a stated exemption for original records issued in English, French or Spanish. A Diploma Supplement can replace examination/credit records only when complete and carrying the prescribed legalisation/apostille. [4]

The central checklist distinguishes authenticity from comparability: it requests CIMEA Verification, or legalisation/apostille if verification cannot be issued for the country; and CIMEA Comparability or an accepted alternative such as the competent Declaration of Value, ENIC/NARIC certification or ARDI correspondence for eligible Lisbon Convention countries. Missing certification may lead to conditional evaluation, with the remaining records supplied later. Final suitability is the university’s decision. [4]

Applicants awaiting the final qualifying award can initially submit an official final-year enrolment certificate and transcript, then integrate the completed qualification. This does not waive the course’s academic prerequisites or establish a new application deadline. Visa-route files include a valid passport; the non-visa foreign-qualification route needs identity and the appropriate EU/Italian citizenship or valid residence-permit evidence. [3, 4]

PICA, Universitaly and the applicant category

Visa-requiring non-EU candidates abroad must first obtain academic/document evaluation through the applicable PICA call. A positive PICA result precedes Universitaly; applications submitted only on Universitaly without PICA evaluation are not considered for validation. The current central general call was 29 May to 7 June 2026, with later calls restricted to specifically named programmes. A special call for another degree does not cover this course. All published general dates have passed; the next call sets the 2027/28 dates. [3]

PICA outcomes distinguish conditional admission, referral to the academic committee, admission and rejection. We submit documents through the prescribed portal, not as a substitute application by email. Each candidate is limited to one course/application under the stated visa procedure. After positive evaluation and Universitaly validation, apply to the consular mission for the visa. The current instructions prohibit completing SOL enrolment and first-instalment payment from abroad: students complete those stages after arriving in Italy. [3]

Italian/EU citizens and eligible non-EU residents holding foreign qualifications use the separate PICA procedure for legally residing international students, opened from 1 July 2026, then enrol after positive evaluation. Domestic-qualification applicants follow the course’s ordinary clearance procedure. Departmental clearance, language evidence and the final qualifying award remain necessary. [1, 3, 4]

How many background credits are required?

At least 80 eligible ECTS across the published matrix, respecting each subject group’s minimum and maximum. [1]

What are the compulsory positive minima?

At least 6 mathematics/physics/statistics/computing credits, 9 chemistry credits and 20 biology-related credits. The total must still reach 80 within all group ceilings. [1]

Are agricultural economics credits compulsory?

That group has a zero minimum and a maximum of 6 counted credits. It is an optional contributor to the 80-credit total. [1]

Is 99/110 a minimum admission grade?

The page states that applicants below 99/110 are interviewed. The committee decides suitability; the threshold identifies an assessment route rather than automatic rejection. [1]

Can an MOI letter replace B2 certification?

No. The central language page rejects MOI alone. Only the accepted certificates and the narrowly documented qualification or native-speaker exemptions count, and we confirm any exemption with the office before you apply. [4, 5]

Is the March call still open?

No. The initial deadline was 31 March 2026; a later general round ended 7 June. Any further course-eligible opening needs an actual central notice. [2, 3]
