About the programme

Italian and Mediterranean Studies is a three-year bachelor's degree in class L-10-R (Humanities), taught entirely in English by Ca' Foscari's Department of Humanities on the Humanistic Campus in Venice. It carries 180 ECTS, has open access and non-compulsory attendance, and took its first students in 2026/27.

The degree rethinks Italian studies by placing Italy within its Mediterranean context. Students build critical and analytical skills across the whole Mediterranean world: its history, its cultures and the political dynamics that shape it today. It suits school leavers drawn to literature, history, art and international affairs who want to study the region from Venice.

What you will study

Courses run from antiquity to the present and work with literary texts, historical documents, artworks, and social and religious practices. Mediterranean history, comparative literature, archaeology, art, intercultural communication and digital scholarship sit alongside Italian language classes that start from beginner level. Units in the 2026/27 timetable include:

How the programme is taught

The degree follows a single curriculum. Students can spend time abroad through Erasmus+ and the Overseas programme, and optional internships, arranged with help from the Career Service in Italy or abroad, let them put their skills to use. Non-Italian students must earn 3 ECTS in Italian before graduating unless they already hold B1, and the first-year Italian course starts at A1.

The university points graduates towards work that needs cultural and intercultural knowledge of Italy and the Mediterranean. It lists:

Fees and scholarships

For 2026/27 Ca' Foscari charges non-EU bachelor's students a flat yearly fee by citizenship: €2,100 for OECD countries, €1,300 for most other countries, including countries like India, and €700 for countries on the ministry's low human development list. The €192 regional tax and €16 stamp duty are included. With an ISEE parificato you can apply for the Veneto regional scholarship; eligible students are fully exempt from fees, giving zero euro tuition for eligible students.

How to apply from outside the EU

International applicants request a pre-evaluation on apply.unive.it with their school diploma and transcript, ranking up to two programmes for one €30 fee. You need 12 years of schooling, and the degree has open access with no entrance test. For 2026/27 the portal opened on 17 December 2025 with rounds by citizenship; the 2027/28 rounds are still to be published.

After the eligibility letter you complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and apply for a type D study visa. Enrolment needs a CIMEA Statement of Comparability, a declaration of value, or an ARDI statement with CIMEA verification.
