The 30-credit rule
You need an Italian bachelor's in civil and environmental engineering (class L-7), or another degree or university diploma, including a foreign one, that gives at least 30 ECTS in the subject areas below or in related areas. [1]
- Basic subjects: computer science and information processing, mathematics, statistics, chemistry and physics (sectors INF/01, ING-INF/05, MAT/03, MAT/05 to MAT/09, SECS-S/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/07, FIS/01 and FIS/07). The teaching regulations ask for at least 12 of the 30 credits in this group. [3]
- Civil and environmental engineering subjects: hydraulics, maritime works, roads, transport, surveying, geotechnics, structures, building and planning (ICAR/01 to ICAR/11, ICAR/17 and ICAR/20), plus geology, environmental chemistry and ecology (GEO/02, GEO/05, GEO/11, CHIM/12 and BIO/07) and some industrial and automation fields (ING-IND/11, 24, 25, 27 to 31 and 35, and ING-INF/04). A committee checks after applications close that your subjects fit the programme. Any missing credits must be made up before the requirements are checked, so by the call deadline. [1]
What this means for your transcript
Italian CFU and the credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit, and the committee looks at your subjects, not just your total. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Civil Engineering, which normally covers maths, physics, structures, hydraulics, geotechnics and transport.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer Science or Environmental Engineering, a B.Arch or B.Plan, or a B.Sc. in Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science. Maths, physics and computing courses count towards the basic block, but you still need 30 ECTS in the listed areas and a fit with the civil engineering core.
- Often short: a B.Com, BBA or BA, where few subjects fall in these areas.
Your degree class also counts in selection. Civil and environmental, information and industrial engineering, planning, architecture and industrial design classes earn 21 to 30 of the 30 degree points, other scientific and technological degrees 11 to 20, and humanities or social science degrees 1 to 10. - A certificate from a body on the Italian ministry's accredited list (Ministerial Decree 62 of 10 March 2022).
- A certificate from a university language centre.
- University exams that state the CEFR level reached in every skill.
- A university degree from a programme taught entirely in a foreign language.
Certificates are valid for five years. The call does not list specific tests or minimum scores. [1]
Selection on 100 points
There is no written test. The committee scores each application out of 100, and you need at least 60 points to be ranked. [1]
- Degree class: up to 30 points.
- Graduation grade: up to 20 points, from 20 for 110 with honours down to 1 to 4 for 66 to 80 on the Italian 110-point scale. Applicants not yet graduated by the application deadline get no grade points.
- Video: up to 50 points, for communication skills (1 to 15), argument and competence (1 to 15) and motivation (1 to 20).
The video is in English, at most three minutes and 50 MB, and answers three set questions: why Italy, Venice and this master; your experience in transport and mobility and your expectations; and which other subjects matter to you and whether the degree applies beyond coastal areas. On equal points the younger candidate ranks first, then the higher video score. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
Iuav ran two rounds for 2026/27. [1][2]
- First round (40 non-EU places): applications by 13:00 on 23 February 2026, ranking on 13 March 2026, pre-enrolment from 13 to 19 March 2026, and Universitaly pre-enrolment by 30 April 2026.
- Second round (35 non-EU places): non-EU applicants living abroad applied by 13:00 on 6 July 2026, with ranking on 21 July, pre-enrolment from 21 to 27 July and Universitaly pre-enrolment by 6 August 2026. EU applicants and non-EU residents in Italy could apply until 24 August 2026.
Foreign degrees had to be completed by 31 July 2026. The 2027/28 call will set new dates. [1]
Documents and non-EU steps
With the application you upload an identity document, your B2 English proof and the video. With a foreign degree you add your diploma, or an enrolment certificate with the expected graduation date, plus your transcript or Diploma Supplement, with English or Italian translations if needed. [1]
Admitted non-EU applicants living abroad pre-enrol, complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and, in the first round, had to show by 31 July 2026 that their visa application had started. Enrolment with a foreign degree ran from 1 August to 15 October 2026 and needs the study visa and a residence permit or its receipt. Iuav may also ask for a Declaration of Value, a CIMEA Statement of Comparability and verification, legalisation or an Apostille. [1]

About the programme
Sustainable Transportation and Smart Maritime Mobility is a two-year laurea magistrale in civil engineering (class LM-23) run by the Department of Design Cultures at Iuav University of Venice. It is taught in English, carries 120 ECTS and is coordinated by Silvio Nocera.
The course treats mobility as one system rather than separate sectors, linking safety, logistics, infrastructure, planning, operations and technology. - Traffic engineering and control, and systems analysis in transportation coastal areas
- Marine fluid dynamics and coastal engineering, and Introduction to the marine environment: ocean and climate
- Structural design and principles of risk assessment of infrastructures in coastal areas
- Studios on large infrastructures and the coastal landscape, and on maritime transportation and land use planning
- Second-year studios on advances in passenger mobility and on the design and operation of freight maritime transport
- Transport planning and management, and interdisciplinary energy analysis and environmental economics
How the programme is taught
Studio work is central, and attendance of at least 70% is required for the studios. The second year includes a 9 ECTS internship, which can be done with a company or organisation, in-house at Iuav or abroad, and a 9 ECTS final examination. The course is linked to Iuav's Venice Sea Lab, and students can use the university's international exchange network.

Fees and scholarships
Iuav has five Study@Iuav fee waivers for this master in 2026/27. Otherwise fees follow family income (ISEE), with full exemption up to an ISEE of €26,000 when merit rules are met. Students with income abroad use the ISEE parificato or apply for a flat rate. With the Veneto regional DSU scholarship, the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
