About the programme
Environmental Sciences and Civil Protection is a three-year laurea in class L-32 (sciences and technologies for the environment and nature), worth 180 ECTS and taught in English by the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences (DISVA) of Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona. It started in 2002/03 and was designed with local bodies including the Municipality of Falconara, the Marche regional environmental protection agency (ARPAM) and the Civil Protection Department at national and regional level.
The course pairs basic science with environmental topics such as ecosystems, global change, hydrogeological, seismic and volcanic hazards, pollution and monitoring, then adds civil protection training in forecasting, prevention and emergency management. The department describes this mix as unique in Italy. It suits school leavers who enjoy science and want a practical role in protecting land and people.
What you will study
The early units build a base in maths and statistics, physics and chemistry, together with biology, ecology and the earth sciences: geology, oceanography, meteorology and climatology. Learning areas listed by the university include:

Many units include laboratory and field exercises, and the plan leaves room for an internship with a public or private organisation or in a university lab. Electives build practical skills such as data processing, pollutant analysis, GIS applications, start-ups and business plans, health emergency response and workplace safety. The course is based in Ancona; the university notes that units with purely theoretical content are also offered online.
Career paths
Graduates take technical and operational roles in the public and private sectors, in environmental monitoring, environmental recovery and civil protection. In Italy they can also join section B of professional registers, for example as a junior biologist or junior planner. The course page lists these roles:

Fees and scholarships
Univpm's FAQ for international students sets a first-year charge of €156 for non-EU citizens of non-OECD countries. To keep the reduced amount later on you need 10 credits by 10 August after year one, or 25 credits in later years. Citizens of OECD countries submit an ISEE parificato by 5 November or pay the course maximum. ERDIS Marche runs the regional scholarship, so the degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.

Your first step is a pre-evaluation request on Univpm's GoMoveIn portal, where you can choose up to two programmes at €10 per application. For 2026/27 the rounds for free-access courses ran from 16 December 2025 to 30 January 2026, 1 March to 30 April and 8 to 30 June 2026, plus a July round for applicants from a listed group of countries. Replies can take about 45 days.
With a positive outcome you pre-enrol on Universitaly, apply for a type D study visa and enrol from mid July. The 2027/28 rounds are not published yet.
