Sapienza University of Rome

Economics and Finance is the English-taught curriculum of Sapienza's three-year, 180 ECTS bachelor's degree in economics (class L-33) in Rome. Entry needs a school leaving certificate after 12 years of study, the CEnT-S or SAT, and a valid B2 English certificate; visa applicants also pass MoveIn pre-selection. Fees follow family income, so it can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
Detailed entry requirements
Sapienza's Economics and Finance curriculum asks for a secondary school leaving certificate, the CEnT-S or SAT, and a valid B2 English certificate; non-EU applicants living abroad also need a pre-acceptance letter from MoveIn pre-selection and Universitaly pre-enrolment. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]
School-leaving requirement
You need a secondary school leaving certificate. For 2026/27 the call accepted certificates obtained or due in 2026. [1] For non-EU applicants living abroad, Sapienza's international admissions page asks for a high school diploma earned after at least 12 years of study. [2]
If your diploma comes from a foreign school system, you send the documents on Sapienza's enrolment list to its international students office before paying the fees. The office can ask for more documents and can refuse admission if the requirements are not met. [1]
What this means for your school results
The call sets no minimum school grade and no required school stream, but the entrance test covers maths and reasoning, and maths runs through the whole degree. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: Class 12 from CBSE, ISC or a state board, or Higher Secondary results from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, after 12 years of schooling, with mathematics in the last two years. A levels with maths also fit the 12-year rule.
- Check carefully: a commerce or humanities stream without mathematics. You can still apply, but a low maths and reasoning score adds a first-year maths requirement (OFA).
- Often short: a qualification with fewer than 12 years of schooling in total, such as a Class 10 certificate followed by a short diploma.
Entrance test
For the English curriculum you take one of two tests. The call sets no pass mark for admission: the score decides whether you have an extra maths requirement. [1]
- CEnT-S: taken from November 2025, at Sapienza or any CISIA university, in person or online at home. Only two sections count: Mathematics (15 questions) and Reasoning on texts and data (15 questions). You can sit it once in each test period.
- SAT General Test: taken from 1 January 2024. Scores go to Sapienza through the College Board (code 9038), and the highest score received by the deadline counts.
For 2026/27 the test had to be taken, and SAT scores received, by 29 October 2026. [1]
Extra maths requirement (OFA)
A SAT below 960 out of 1600, or a CEnT-S score below 8 in the selected sections, adds a first-year maths requirement. [1]
- The Faculty runs maths preparatory courses before lectures (1 to 11 September in 2026), online remedial courses and OFA tests through the year.
- You clear it by passing Calculus and Linear Algebra in the first year, or the assessment at the end of the online course.
- If you do not clear it in the first year, you repeat the first year and cannot take later-year exams.
English
A currently valid English certificate at B2 or higher, issued by a recognised body. The call does not list specific tests or scores. [1] You are exempt if you are:
- a native English speaker;
- holding a high school diploma or university degree taught in English at an accredited institution in the EU, EEA or Schengen area, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States or another country on the university's list;
- holding an International Baccalaureate, GCSE or equivalent diploma or certificate.
The certificate is submitted to the Faculty before the study programme is presented, to choose the curriculum. Without it, you can enrol only in the Italian-taught curricula. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
- MoveIn pre-selection for non-EU applicants living abroad: 22 December 2025 to 15 May 2026. [2]
- Universitaly pre-enrolment: by 30 June 2026. [1]
- Infostud registration: 2 July to 29 October 2026. [1]
- CEnT-S or SAT taken, and SAT scores received: by 29 October 2026. [1]
- First fee instalment to enrol: 1 September to 5 November 2026. [1]
The 2027/28 dates come with the next call. [1]
Non-EU applicants living abroad
To join the English curriculum, non-EU applicants who live abroad and need a student visa must hold a pre-acceptance letter, downloaded after a positive outcome in Sapienza's pre-selection, and complete Universitaly pre-enrolment. The pre-acceptance letter does not by itself give a right to a visa or to enrolment. [1]
Pre-selection runs on MoveIn and allows applications to two programmes at most per academic year. [2] After pre-selection you register on Infostud using code 14613, take the test and enrol. [1]

About the programme
Economics and Finance (Economia e finanza) is a three-year bachelor's degree in class L-33, worth 180 ECTS, in Sapienza's Faculty of Economics and run by the Department of Economics and Law. The degree has four curricula: three taught in Italian and one, Economics and Finance, taught fully in English. This page is about the English curriculum.
The degree gives the knowledge and the theoretical and quantitative tools needed to understand how economies work, analyse economic and financial variables and design public policy. It suits school leavers who are comfortable with mathematics, which the university calls a core part of the course.
What you will study
In the Economics and Finance curriculum every unit is taught in English. The first two years build a base in economics, business, maths and statistics, and the third year turns to econometrics and international economics. Units in the study plan include:
- Microeconomics and Macroeconomics
- Calculus and Linear Algebra
- Financial Reporting
- Financial Markets and Institutions
- Financial Mathematics
- Statistical Inference
- Econometrics
- International Trade and Finance
How the programme is taught
Short practical units run through the plan: Data Analysis for Economics and Business, Computer Tools for Economic and Business Analysis and a Sustainability Lab. The third year leaves 12 ECTS for electives, and the final exam (3 ECTS) is an essay linked to your internship or thesis work.
Career paths
The university describes three graduate profiles, each suited to analysis and decision-making roles:
- International economic analyst, for international institutions, public administration, research centres and development NGOs
- Economic and environmental analyst, for territorial and environmental planning, trade associations and tourism bodies
- Economic and financial analyst, for banks, financial institutions, consulting firms, companies and research centres
Fees and scholarships
Sapienza sets tuition by family income (ISEE). Students who declare income earned abroad and cannot provide an ISEE pay a fixed-rate enrolment fee that depends on their country of origin. [1] The regional scholarship body is DiSCo Lazio, and its scholarship winners also get a tuition waiver, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students. The region decides scholarship awards.
How to apply from outside the EU
The economics bachelors share one call. For the English curriculum you take the CEnT-S (maths and reasoning sections) or the SAT; it checks your preparation rather than ranking you, and a preparatory maths course runs in early September. For 2026/27 the test and Infostud registration (code 14613) were due by 29 October 2026, and enrolment by 5 November 2026. The 2027/28 calendar is not yet published. [1]
Before that, non-EU applicants living abroad who need a student visa apply for pre-selection on MoveIn (up to two programmes), which for 2026/27 ran from 22 December 2025 to 15 May 2026, download a pre-acceptance letter and complete Universitaly pre-enrolment by 30 June 2026. [1][2] You then apply for a type D study visa and provide a CIMEA statement or declaration of value for your diploma.
How ApplyAZ helps
ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.
For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:
- We check your school results against Sapienza's entry rules for this programme.
- We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
- We prepare and submit your MoveIn pre-selection, Universitaly pre-enrolment and Infostud test registration.
- We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your DiSCo Lazio scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
- We prepare your visa file.
With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).
Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.
Questions and answers
What school qualification do I need for Sapienza's Economics and Finance bachelor?
A secondary school leaving certificate. Sapienza's international admissions page asks non-EU applicants living abroad for a diploma earned after at least 12 years of study. The call sets no minimum school grade. [1][2]
Is there an entrance exam?
Yes. For the English curriculum you take the CEnT-S, where only the maths and reasoning sections count, or the SAT. The test checks your preparation: the call sets no pass mark for admission, and for 2026/27 it had to be taken by 29 October 2026. [1]
What SAT or CEnT-S score do I need?
There is no minimum for admission. A SAT below 960 out of 1600, or a CEnT-S score below 8 in the selected sections, adds a maths requirement that you clear in the first year, for example by passing Calculus and Linear Algebra. [1]
What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?
A valid B2 certificate from a recognised body; the call names no specific test or score. Native speakers, IB or GCSE holders, and students schooled in English in the EU, UK, US, Australia, New Zealand or another country on the university's list are exempt. Indian school diplomas are not named, so we check which B2 proof you need. [1]
When is the deadline for non-EU students?
For 2026/27, MoveIn pre-selection for visa applicants ran from 22 December 2025 to 15 May 2026, Universitaly pre-enrolment closed on 30 June 2026, and the test was due by 29 October 2026. The 2027/28 calendar is not yet published. [1][2]
Can I apply before I finish school?
Yes. For 2026/27 the call accepted school leaving certificates obtained or due in 2026, and you can take the CEnT-S during the last two years of secondary school, before your final results are out. [1]
I studied commerce or humanities without maths in Class 12. Can I apply?
Yes, the call does not require a particular school stream. Maths is a core part of the degree, though: a CEnT-S score below 8 or a SAT below 960 adds a first-year maths requirement, cleared by passing Calculus and Linear Algebra. Sapienza runs a maths preparatory course in September. [1]
What jobs do Economics and Finance graduates do?
The university lists international economic analysis, economic and environmental analysis, and economic and financial analysis, in banks, financial institutions, consulting firms, public bodies, international organisations and research centres.
Can someone handle my whole application to Economics and Finance at Sapienza?
Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your school results against Sapienza's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the DiSCo Lazio scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students. Start by checking your eligibility.
I'm applying from India. What is the route into Economics and Finance?
Indian applicants need Class 12 after at least 12 years of schooling, ideally with maths, the CEnT-S or SAT, and a valid B2 English certificate, since an Indian school diploma is not named among the exemptions. The steps are MoveIn pre-selection, a pre-acceptance letter and Universitaly pre-enrolment, then the test and Infostud registration. [1][2] Indian students apply for the type D study visa at the Italian embassy or consulate that covers their state, such as New Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Is the route different from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka?
No. The academic rules for Economics and Finance are the same whatever your nationality. Applicants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka follow the same steps as India: MoveIn pre-selection, a pre-acceptance letter, Universitaly pre-enrolment and the CEnT-S or SAT, then a type D study visa from the Italian mission for their country of residence. Read our guide for students in Dhaka.
I live in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain. Where do I apply for the visa?
At the Italian embassy or consulate responsible for the country where you legally live, after Universitaly pre-enrolment. The academic rules for Economics and Finance are the same whatever your nationality, and Gulf residents follow the same steps: MoveIn pre-selection, a pre-acceptance letter, Universitaly pre-enrolment and the CEnT-S or SAT. Read our guides for Dubai, Riyadh and Doha.
I studied or live in London, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. What is the route?
The academic rules for Economics and Finance are the same whatever your nationality, and your school results are assessed like any other foreign qualification. Non-EU applicants who live abroad follow the same route: MoveIn pre-selection, a pre-acceptance letter, Universitaly pre-enrolment and the CEnT-S or SAT, then a type D study visa from the Italian mission for where they live. Read our guides for students in London, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
