Entry requirements

Detailed entry requirements

Sapienza's Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence bachelor has limited places. Non-EU applicants who need a study visa need a secondary school diploma with a GPA of at least 75/100, a MoveIn pre-acceptance letter, a CEnT-S, English TOLC-I or SAT score of at least 36/100 on Sapienza's converted scale, and English at B2. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]

School-leaving requirement

You need an upper secondary school diploma, already obtained or due in the year you apply (2026 for the 2026/27 intake). [1]

  • Non-EU applicants living abroad who need a study visa: a GPA of at least 75/100 in the school diploma.
  • EU applicants and non-EU applicants legally resident in Italy: the diploma, with no minimum GPA stated in the call.

Applicants with a foreign school qualification provide the documents on Sapienza's list for foreign qualifications when they enrol. [1]

What this means for your school results

The call sets no required school subjects. It sets a minimum GPA for visa applicants, and the admission test decides your rank. As a guide, based on the rule above:

  • Usually a fit: Class 12 or Higher Secondary results of 75% or more overall, on a 100-point scale.
  • Check carefully: results close to 75%, and grades on a letter, 4-point or 10-point scale, including A levels, where the conversion to a 100-point GPA decides whether you meet the rule.
  • Often short: overall results below 75%, even with a strong test score, because the GPA minimum applies to every non-EU applicant who needs a visa.

For the CEnT-S, only the Mathematics, Reasoning on texts and data, and Physics sections count towards your score. [1]

English

English at CEFR level B2 or higher. The call accepts: [1]

  • Certificates: IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 42, PTE General Level 3, Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, including the IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT home editions.
  • Qualifications: an International Baccalaureate Diploma, a GCE, or a diploma or degree taught in English from an accredited institution in the EU, EEA or Schengen area, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US or another country on the university's list.
  • Admission tests: having taken the SAT, English TOLC-I or CEnT-S also counts.

Non-EU applicants who need a visa upload their English proof on MoveIn within the pre-acceptance deadline. [1]

Admission test and ranking

Places go by a ranking of admission test scores, converted to a scale of 100. The minimum score for admission is 36/100. [1]

  • Tests for non-EU applicants who need a visa: the CEnT-S taken from November 2025, the English TOLC-I taken between 1 July 2024 and November 2025, or the SAT General Test taken from 1 January 2024.
  • Conversion: the CEnT-S counts out of 35 points without normalisation, and SAT scores from 600 to 1600 are scaled to 0 to 100. If you sit a test more than once, your best valid score counts.
  • Interview: the committee may call candidates to an online interview. A negative outcome means no admission, whatever the test score.
  • Maths catch-up (OFA): a score below 40/100 adds an extra maths requirement, cleared in the first year by an OFA recovery test or by passing Linear Algebra (6 CFU). Until it is cleared, you cannot sit exams from later years.

SAT scores must reach Sapienza through the College Board (institution code 9038) by the selection deadline. Ties go to the younger candidate. [1]

Places in 2026/27

The 2026/27 call offered 180 places: 120 for EU applicants and non-EU applicants legally resident in Italy, and 60 for non-EU applicants living abroad who need a visa, 5 of them reserved for China's Marco Polo programme. Non-EU places left empty pass to EU applicants. [1]

2026/27 deadlines

Non-EU applicants who need a visa could take part only in the first selection. For 2026/27 the dates were: [1]

  • MoveIn pre-selection: by 15 May 2026.
  • Admission test and selection fee on Infostud (code 14824): fee payable from 8 May to 18 June 2026, test by 18 June 2026.
  • Universitaly pre-enrolment: by 30 June 2026.
  • Scores published 2 July 2026, merit ranking 29 July 2026, enrolment fee paid from 1 to 7 September 2026.
  • Further lists for empty non-EU places: 9, 16 and 23 September 2026.

EU applicants and non-EU applicants legally resident in Italy also had a second selection, from 22 June to 24 August 2026. The 2027/28 call sets the new dates. [1]

Pre-acceptance, Universitaly and enrolment

Non-EU applicants who need a visa must hold a pre-acceptance letter for this degree. After a positive MoveIn pre-selection, you accept the offer on the platform and download the letter as a PDF. Only the candidate can download it from MoveIn. MoveIn pre-selection is separate from the selection on Infostud. [1]

Universitaly pre-enrolment is required for the study visa but does not by itself give admission. You enrol by paying the first fee instalment with enrolment code 33502, and by sending the documents for your foreign school qualification to Sapienza's international students office. [1]

About the programme

Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence is a three-year bachelor's degree in class L-31 (computer science), worth 180 ECTS and taught in English by the Department of Computer Science in Sapienza's Faculty of Information Engineering, Informatics and Statistics in Rome.

The programme prepares graduates to work in computer science with specific expertise in artificial intelligence and the main areas of applied computing. Alongside technical skills, it builds scientific method, mathematical ability and the English needed for international work. Access is limited: the 2026/27 call offered 120 places for EU students and 60 for non-EU students living abroad, 5 of them reserved for the Marco Polo programme.

What you will study

The first two years combine mathematics, physics and statistics with the foundations of computer science and AI. In the third year you pick electives that shape your profile in applied computing, which can include economics or law. Units in the study plan include:

  • Programming and Programming 2
  • Computer Architecture
  • Algorithms
  • Calculus and Linear Algebra
  • Data Management and Analysis
  • Systems and Networking
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • AI Lab: Computer Vision and NLP

How the programme is taught

The degree ends with a 15 ECTS internship and a 3 ECTS final exam. The internship can be academic, with in-depth work on advanced topics under a faculty supervisor, or in a company, working on software development, data analysis, AI, systems or networks. Several Erasmus agreements let students spend part of the degree abroad.

Career paths

Graduates are trained to build new systems and to maintain and adapt existing ones. The skills the university lists include applying AI, machine learning and deep learning; processing data; administering databases; building software and web services; managing networks; and securing information systems. Typical employers are:

  • Software development firms
  • Companies that build information systems or IT services
  • Organisations that develop IT tools to run their own activities
  • Public administration

Graduates can also sit the Italian state exam for the junior engineers' register (information section), or go on to a master's degree in computer science, AI or other sciences.

Fees and scholarships

A selection fee is paid for each round. Sapienza has published its fee rules up to 2025/26, with 2026/27 details due after 30 September 2026. Non-EU students whose income is abroad cannot use an Italian ISEE and are assigned a fee band by country instead. India, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan are in Band A, the lowest band. A student who wins or is eligible for a DiSCo Lazio grant pays only a token amount.

How to apply from outside the EU

Non-EU places are filled in one round only. For 2026/27 you needed MoveIn pre-selection by 15 May 2026, then a test result and the selection fee by 18 June 2026; the merit ranking was published on 29 July and enrolment ran through September.

Pre-selection is on MoveIn, with two applications per intake, and opened on 22 December 2025 for 2026/27. Pre-accepted students complete Universitaly pre-enrolment (by 30 June 2026) and apply for a type D study visa. At enrolment you present a CIMEA statement or a declaration of value for your diploma.

How ApplyAZ helps

ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.

For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:

  • We check your school results against Sapienza's entry rules for this programme.
  • We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
  • We prepare and submit your MoveIn pre-selection application, Infostud selection entry and Universitaly pre-enrolment.
  • We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your DiSCo Lazio scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
  • We prepare your visa file.

With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).

Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.

Questions and answers

What school results do I need for Sapienza's Applied Computer Science and AI bachelor?

Non-EU applicants who need a study visa need a secondary school diploma with a GPA of at least 75/100, obtained or due in the year of entry. You also need an admission test score of at least 36/100 on Sapienza's converted scale and English at B2. [1]

Which entrance test do I need?

Non-EU applicants who need a visa can use the CEnT-S, the English TOLC-I or the SAT. For 2026/27 only the CEnT-S maths, reasoning and physics sections counted, the English TOLC-I had to be taken between July 2024 and November 2025, and SAT scores had to reach Sapienza by the deadline. [1]

What is the minimum test score?

36/100 on Sapienza's converted scale, and places then go by ranking. A score below 40/100 adds a first-year maths requirement (OFA), cleared by an OFA recovery test or by passing Linear Algebra. The committee may also call candidates to an online interview. [1]

What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?

English at B2. IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 42 or Cambridge B2 First meet it, and the call also lists having taken the SAT, English TOLC-I or CEnT-S as an alternative. Non-EU applicants upload the proof on MoveIn during pre-selection. [1]

When is the deadline for non-EU students?

For 2026/27, non-EU applicants who need a visa had one selection: MoveIn pre-selection by 15 May 2026, the test and the selection fee by 18 June 2026, and Universitaly pre-enrolment by 30 June 2026. The 2027/28 call sets the new dates. [1]

How many places are there for non-EU students?

The 2026/27 call offered 60 places for non-EU applicants living abroad who need a visa, 5 of them for China's Marco Polo programme, and 120 for EU and equivalent applicants. Non-EU places left empty pass to EU applicants. [1]

I studied Commerce or Biology in Class 12. Can I still apply?

Possibly. The 2026/27 call sets no required school subjects: it asks for a diploma with a GPA of at least 75/100 and a test score of at least 36/100. Your rank comes from the CEnT-S maths, reasoning and physics sections, or the SAT or English TOLC-I, so maths preparation matters. [1]

What jobs do graduates get?

The university points to software development firms, companies building information systems and IT services, organisations developing their own IT tools, and public administration. Graduates can also continue to a master's degree.

Can someone handle my whole application to Applied Computer Science and AI at Sapienza?

Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your school results against Sapienza's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the DiSCo Lazio scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students. Start by checking your eligibility.
