School-leaving requirement
You need an upper secondary school diploma, obtained in Italy or abroad. For 2026/27 it had to be obtained, or due, by the end of the 2025/26 school year. [1]

What this means for your school results
As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: an Indian Class 12 certificate from CBSE, CISCE or a state board, a Pakistani HSSC, a Bangladeshi HSC, or Sri Lankan or Cambridge A levels, as upper secondary diplomas, provided you are in the eligible applicant group below.
- Check carefully: any foreign diploma against the ministerial rules for international students, which the call applies but does not repeat.
- Often short: a Class 10 certificate on its own, or a diploma not completed by the end of the school year the call sets.

For 2026/27 the call reserved no places for non-EU applicants living abroad. All places were for EU and equivalent applicants. [1]
- Citizens of EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, San Marino and the Holy See.
- Non-EU citizens with a valid Italian residence permit for family, work, asylum, subsidiary protection or other listed reasons, or an EU long-term resident permit.
- Non-EU citizens already enrolled in 2025/26 in a degree course at an Italian university or in a Foundation Year programme.
- Staff of foreign diplomatic missions or international bodies in Italy, and their spouses and children.
English and Italian
The call requires no separate English language test. The IMAT itself is in English. You can declare one of the English certificates recognised by the ministry when you register, and it only counts to break a tie. [1]
Students whose native language is not Italian must show Italian at CEFR B2 by the start of year 3. [1]
The admission test
Entry is through the national IMAT, set by MUR decree 1005 of 6 August 2026. For 2026/27 it was held on 29 September 2026 at 1:30 pm, at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, and ran for 100 minutes. [1]
- 60 multiple-choice questions in English with five options each: 4 on reading skills and knowledge from school studies, 5 on logical reasoning and problems, 23 on biology, 15 on chemistry and 13 on physics and mathematics.
- Scoring: 1.5 points for a correct answer, minus 0.4 for a wrong one and zero for a blank, up to 90 points.
- EU and equivalent applicants need at least 20 points to enter the national ranking, which also reflects the university preferences you give at registration.
- Ties are broken by the biology, chemistry, physics and maths, logic and reading scores in turn, then by a declared English certificate, then by the decree's disability preference, then by the younger candidate.
- Students admitted with less than half the maximum score receive additional learning requirements (OFA) in chemistry, biology or physics, where gaps are found.

For 2026/27 the call set 50 places for EU and equivalent applicants, 3 of them for part-time enrolment, and none for non-EU applicants living abroad. Places were allocated through the national ranking and were conditional on the successful initial accreditation of the programme. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
- Registration on Universitaly: 26 August to 3:00 pm on 9 September 2026 (Italian time). Late applications and payments are not accepted.
- Requests for extra time for disability or SLD: by the same deadline, with certification.
- Admission test: 29 September 2026.
- Anonymous scores: 8 October 2026, with test papers visible from 19 October 2026.
- National ranking: 26 October 2026, with later updates on the national timetable.
- Enrolment: from 26 October 2026. Applicants assigned to Florence enrol within four days, counting the day of publication and excluding weekends and national holidays.

Documents and enrolment
- Registration is only through Universitaly. Florence does not run a separate university admission application.
- Applicants assigned a place who miss the enrolment deadline lose it, whatever the reason. Applicants with booked status can enrol or wait for later ranking updates, as long as they confirm their interest.
- Holders of a foreign qualification also submit the documents for their qualification by the deadline the university sets.

About the programme
Medicine and Surgery is a six-year single-cycle master's degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-41) run by the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the University of Florence. It opened in 2026/27 as the first single-cycle degree taught entirely in English in Tuscany. Teaching is in person in Florence, and access is restricted at national level. The course aims to give future doctors the scientific foundations and practical training needed for the medical profession, with a holistic approach to the health of healthy and ill people in their physical, biological and social environment. It suits school leavers who want to become doctors and are ready for the IMAT.
What you will study
The degree is organised in semesters over six years and 360 ECTS. The early years cover the basic sciences, then pathology, clinical medicine and surgery follow. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

How the programme is taught
Of the 360 ECTS, 60 are professionalising activities, including a 15 ECTS practical internship that comes before the award of the qualifying degree, and 8 ECTS are electives of your choice. This clinical training takes place in university hospital facilities and other healthcare facilities of the local health service. Each year of the plan includes its own set of professionalising activities, so hands-on work runs through the whole course.
Career paths
The programme trains graduates with the professional, decision-making and operational autonomy needed to practise medicine, together with the habit of lifelong learning. Because the final internship is part of the degree, graduation qualifies you for the medical profession in Italy. From there, doctors typically continue into postgraduate specialisation, clinical work or research, including PhD study.
Fees and scholarships
Medicine follows UniFi's income-based fees. For 2026/27, students resident abroad are given a figurative ISEE from their country's World Bank income group, which sets the yearly contribution on top of the regional tax and stamp duty. Students from developing countries pay only those two taxes, and DSU Toscana scholarship winners and eligible students pay only stamp duty, so this degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.
