Single-cycle Master in Medicine and Surgery at University of Florence

About the programme

Medicine and Surgery is a six-year single-cycle master's degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-41) run by the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the University of Florence. It opened in 2026/27 as the first single-cycle degree taught entirely in English in Tuscany. Teaching is in person in Florence, and access is restricted at national level, with 50 places in 2026/27.

The course aims to give future doctors the scientific foundations and practical training needed for the medical profession, with a holistic approach to the health of healthy and ill people in their physical, biological and social environment. It suits school leavers who want to become doctors and are ready for the IMAT.

What you will study

The degree is organised in semesters over six years and 360 ECTS. The early years cover the basic sciences, then pathology, clinical medicine and surgery follow. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

• Physics and Chemical Sciences and Biological and Psychological Sciences foundational for clinical practice
• Biochemistry, Human Anatomy, Histology and Physiology
• General Pathology and Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology
• Pharmacology and Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases
• Neurology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and One Health
• Internal Medicine, Surgery and Medical and Surgical Emergencies

How the programme is taught

Of the 360 ECTS, 60 are professionalising activities, including a 15 ECTS practical internship that comes before the award of the qualifying degree, and 8 ECTS are electives of your choice. This clinical training takes place in university hospital facilities and other healthcare facilities of the local health service. Each year of the plan includes its own set of professionalising activities, so hands-on work runs through the whole course.

Career paths

The programme trains graduates with the professional, decision-making and operational autonomy needed to practise medicine, together with the habit of lifelong learning. Because the final internship is part of the degree, graduation qualifies you for the medical profession in Italy. From there, doctors typically continue into postgraduate specialisation, clinical work or research, including PhD study.

Fees and scholarships

Medicine follows UniFi's income-based fees. For 2026/27, students resident abroad are given a figurative ISEE from their country's World Bank income group, from €25,500 to €75,500, which sets the yearly contribution on top of the €140 regional tax and €16 stamp duty. Students from developing countries pay only those two taxes, and DSU Toscana scholarship winners and eligible students pay only stamp duty, so this degree can be tuition-free for eligible students.

How to apply from outside the EU

Entry is through the IMAT, a national test whose rules and date are set each year by the Ministry of University and Research, followed by a national ranking. For 2026/27 the test is scheduled for late September 2026, and applications closed on Universitaly at 15:00 Italian time on 9 September 2026. The university publishes its call once the ministerial decree is out.

Non-EU applicants living abroad also complete Universitaly pre-enrolment, get a declaration of value or CIMEA statement for their diploma, and apply for a type D study visa.
