Entry requirements

Detailed entry requirements

Messina's Computer Science bachelor, whose Data Analysis curriculum is taught in English, has open access: you need a school diploma after 12 years of schooling, a B2 English certificate and a positive pre-evaluation, and a CISIA TOLC test checks your starting knowledge. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]

School-leaving requirement

You need a secondary school diploma, or a foreign qualification recognised as suitable, obtained after 12 years of schooling. [1][2] The admission rules for international applicants add: [1]

  • If your diploma is not issued yet, you can upload a provisional course completion certificate.
  • If your national system requires a university entrance exam, you also need that certificate.
  • If your schooling lasted fewer than 12 years, you need a certificate showing you passed all first-year university exams, or a certificate of completing a foundation programme. Messina runs its own UniME Foundation Course with separate calls.

What this means for your school results

The rule counts years of schooling and does not name a school stream or a minimum mark. [1][2] As a guide, based on the rule above:

  • Usually a fit: Class 12 or Higher Secondary results that complete 12 years of schooling, such as CBSE, ISC or state board certificates in India, HSSC in Pakistan or HSC in Bangladesh, and A levels.
  • Check carefully: a school background with little maths. The first year includes Calculus 1 and 2, Discrete Mathematics and Physics, and the TOLC test checks your starting knowledge, so weak maths can lead to extra first-year obligations. [3]
  • Often short: a school system with fewer than 12 years in total, which needs a first year of university or a foundation programme first.

English

The English-taught route needs an English certificate at CEFR B2 level. Messina accepts: [4]

  • IELTS 5.5 or higher, valid for two years from the test date
  • TOEFL iBT 72 or higher, valid for two years from the test date
  • Cambridge B2 First or higher
  • PTE General Level 3, or PTE Academic 59

Native speakers from listed countries, including the UK, the USA, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, are exempt, as are holders of a degree taught entirely in English in those countries or an IB Diploma taught entirely in English. English-medium schooling is not on the exemption list. [4]

Pre-evaluation, TOLC and OFA

Access is open, with no cap on places. Messina pre-evaluates each application and sends an admission letter if the outcome is positive. Incomplete applications, or ones that do not meet the entry or language rules, are rejected. [1][2]

Your starting knowledge is checked with a CISIA TOLC test or an equivalent, and an English-language TOLC-I is available. If you do not pass, you get additional learning obligations (OFA) to clear in the first year, through a CISIA OFA test or set first-year exams. If you do not clear them, you repeat the first year. [2][6]

2027/28 deadlines

For 2027/28, non-EU applicants who need a visa have three rounds on the UniME Application Portal: [1]

  • Early bird: 1 to 20 December 2026, only for applicants who already hold their final documents and a declaration of value or CIMEA statement of comparability.
  • Second round: 2 February to 19 March 2027.
  • Third round: 8 April to 8 May 2027.

The university can close a round early depending on the number of applications. For 2026/27 the Universitaly pre-enrolment deadline was 15 September 2026, and the 2027/28 date is not yet set. [1]

Documents and non-EU steps

For 2027/28 you can submit up to two applications. Documents cannot be added after you submit. You upload: [1]

  • Your school diploma or provisional course completion certificate, and your transcript.
  • A university entrance exam certificate, if your national system requires one.
  • A passport valid for at least 18 months.
  • Your English certificate, unless you are exempt.
  • Translations together with the original-language documents.

With the admission letter, you pre-enrol on Universitaly using the same email address as on the UniME portal, and Messina confirms it once your documents are valid. You can enrol only with a valid type D study visa issued for the University of Messina. [1]

About the programme

Computer Science (Informatica) is a three-year bachelor's degree at the University of Messina in class L-31-R, worth 180 ECTS and run by the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and Earth Sciences. Access is open, without a limited number of places. [2]

The degree has two curricula. The university's international office lists the Data Analysis curriculum among its English-taught programmes, while the Tecnologie Informatiche curriculum follows the Italian route. The programme website gives the teaching languages as English and Italian, and we check that every course in your plan is offered in English. [2][7]

What you will study

The 2026/27 study plan for the Data Analysis curriculum includes: [3]

  • Year one: Programming, Algorithms and Data Structures, Calculus 1 and 2, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematics for Data Analysis, and Physics 1 and 2.
  • Year two: Databases, Operating Systems, Object Oriented Programming, Devices for Artificial Intelligence, Network Science and Applications, and Statistical Methods and Models.
  • Year three: Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, System Security, Web Programming, English Language, a choice between Data Modelling and Wireless Sensor Networks, a traineeship and a final dissertation.

Career paths

The university names three profiles: software analyst and programmer in software houses, consulting firms or freelance work; systems administrator in companies, banks, insurers and public administration; and data analyst in finance, insurance, media, logistics and research and development. The Data Analysis curriculum is aimed at Big Data roles involving complex data processing and machine learning. [2]

Fees and scholarships

Messina charges non-EU students a flat yearly fee by country group, a rule in force since 2025/26. Countries like India are in Group B. [5] Eligible students can apply for a need-based grant from ERSU Messina, which decides awards each year.

How to apply from outside the EU

We apply for the English-taught route on the UniME Application Portal. For 2027/28 you can submit up to two applications. Applicants who need a visa can apply in three rounds: 1 to 20 December 2026, an early-bird round for applicants who already hold their final school documents and a declaration of value or CIMEA statement, then 2 February to 19 March 2027 and 8 April to 8 May 2027. The university can close a round early. [1] After a positive evaluation we pre-enrol you on Universitaly. You need a school qualification showing 12 years of study and a B2 English certificate, such as IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, B2 First or PTE Academic 59. Your starting knowledge is checked with a CISIA TOLC test or an equivalent; a low score adds extra first-year work (OFA) but does not block admission. [1][2][4]

If you live outside the EU and need a study visa, the university first evaluates your application. After a positive outcome we complete pre-enrolment on Universitaly, and you apply for a type D study visa at the Italian consulate or visa centre. You can enrol only with a valid study visa issued for the University of Messina. [1]

How ApplyAZ helps

ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.

For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:

  • We check your school results against Messina's entry rules for this programme.
  • We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
  • We prepare and submit your UniME Application Portal application and Universitaly pre-enrolment.
  • We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your regional DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
  • We prepare your visa file.

With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).

Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.

Questions and answers

What school results do I need for Computer Science at Messina?

A secondary school diploma, or a recognised foreign equivalent, after 12 years of schooling, plus a university entrance exam certificate if your country requires one. With fewer than 12 years, you need a completed first year of university or a foundation programme. [1][2]

Is there an entrance test?

Access is open, with no cap on places. Your starting knowledge is checked with a CISIA TOLC test or an equivalent. A low result adds extra first-year obligations (OFA), which you clear through an OFA test or set first-year exams. [2][6]

What English level do I need? Do I need IELTS?

B2. Messina accepts IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, B2 First, PTE General Level 3 or PTE Academic 59, with IELTS and TOEFL valid for two years. Native speakers from listed countries and holders of an English-taught IB Diploma are exempt. [4]

When is the deadline for non-EU students?

For 2027/28, visa applicants can apply from 1 to 20 December 2026 (early bird, final documents and declaration of value needed), from 2 February to 19 March 2027 or from 8 April to 8 May 2027. Rounds can close early. [1]

Is this programme taught in English?

The Data Analysis curriculum is the English-taught route and appears on Messina's list of English-taught bachelor's degrees. The programme website lists English and Italian as teaching languages, so we confirm the language of each unit in your plan. [2][7]

How are the fees set?

Non-EU students pay a flat yearly fee by country group, a rule in force since 2025/26. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are in Group B, and Bangladesh is in Group A. [5]

I studied Commerce or Arts in Class 12. Can I apply?

The admission rule asks for 12 years of schooling and does not name a school stream. The first year includes Calculus, Discrete Mathematics and Physics, and the TOLC test checks your starting knowledge, so weak maths can lead to extra first-year obligations. [1][2][3]

What jobs does it lead to?

The university names three profiles: software analyst and programmer, systems administrator, and data analyst. Graduates work in software houses, consulting, banking, insurance, public administration, finance and logistics, or as freelancers. [2]

Can someone handle my whole application to Computer Science at Messina?

Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your school results against Messina's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the regional DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students. Start by checking your eligibility.
