- A secondary school qualification from 12 years of schooling, certified as equivalent to the Italian diploma.
- English at CEFR level B2 for non-native speakers; native speakers are recognised automatically.
- A pass in the IMAT (International Medical Admission Test), taken on the same day across Italy, with a score at or above the threshold set each year by ministerial decree.
- Places, the test date and the selection rules are set every year by the Ministry of University and Research and published in the admission call.
- Scores below 25% in biology, chemistry or physics lead to additional learning requirements in those subjects.

Medicine and Surgery is a six-year single-cycle degree (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-41) worth 360 ECTS, taught in English. It is run by the Department of Biomedical and Dental Sciences and Morphofunctional Imaging of the University of Messina, with clinical training at the G. Martino University Hospital in Messina.
The degree trains doctors for health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, in Italy and abroad. Access is limited and goes through the IMAT, the national admission test for English-taught medicine. It suits school leavers with strong biology, chemistry and physics who can commit to six years of study and clinical practice.
What you will study
The first two years cover the preclinical sciences, and the remaining four build clinical disciplines and professional skills. The degree ends with an 18 ECTS thesis.
- Year 1: medical physics, statistics, biology, genetics, anatomy and communication skills
- Year 2: human anatomy, physiology, microbiology, neuroanatomy and mechanisms of disease
- Year 3: clinical semeiotics, infectious diseases, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, laboratory medicine
- Year 4: endocrine and metabolic diseases, nephrology, pathology, oncology and gastroenterology
- Year 5: neuroscience, obstetrics, paediatrics, psychiatry and orthopaedics
- Year 6: internal medicine, surgery and emergency care
How the programme is taught
At least 60 ECTS come from professional training, mostly in the operative units of the G. Martino University Hospital, where patient care is combined with teaching and research, and in general practitioner offices. Up to 8 ECTS of electives can be seminars, conferences or clinical and research internships in Italy or abroad, and training periods are possible at partner universities in and outside Europe.
Teaching is in English, and the university offers Italian courses at its language centre in years one and two so students reach B1 for talking with patients. After the practical evaluation traineeship, the final exam also serves as the state exam that qualifies graduates to practise.

After registering with the medical board, graduates can work as doctors in:

The degree also gives access to specialisation schools in medicine, surgery and clinical services, the specific training course in general medicine, and PhD or research careers in basic, translational and clinical research.

The yearly amount is €156, €256, €356 or €506 including the €156 regional tax, and countries like India fall in the €256 group. ERSU Messina scholarships, based mainly on family income, add a tuition fee waiver to cash, housing and meals, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.
How to apply from outside the EU
Medicine has its own IMAT call, open to all candidates, which requires submission on both the UniME application portal and Universitaly; the other visa calls do not cover it. On the admission page the call runs from 1 to 22 July, with the €40 application fee. You then sit the IMAT on the national date, and places are assigned through the ranking.
