International Relations (IR) is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's degree (class LM-52) taught entirely in English at the University of Macerata, with three curricula in international politics and economic relations. Fees depend on country of origin and income, so it can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in political science, international relations, economics, law, commerce, management, business, social sciences, communication or foreign languages, with 15 years of schooling in total.
- Credits set by curriculum: for example at least 12 ECTS in economics and statistics for International Economic Relations, or 12 ECTS in political science, sociology or law for International Politics.
- English at B2 level (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 87, Cambridge B2 or equivalent), native speaker status, or an English-taught bachelor's with a medium of instruction letter.
- CV, degree certificate with transcript, passport, a motivation letter and at least two references on the DreamApply portal.
- No entrance test: the IR pre-admission committee assesses your file.
- At enrolment: your legalised, translated degree with a declaration of value, Diploma Supplement or ENIC-NARIC certificate.
About the programme
International Relations (IR) is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-52) worth 120 ECTS, run by the Department of Political Sciences, Communication and International Relations of the University of Macerata. It is taught entirely in English and combines the institutional view of a school of government with the practical approach of business studies.
The course is small by design and has hosted students from more than 50 countries. It suits graduates in political science, economics, law, business, social sciences or languages who want to work on international politics, trade or cooperation.
What you will study
You choose one of three curricula: International Economic Relations (economic and commercial relations and foreign markets), International Politics and Economic Relations (the most multidisciplinary track) or International Politics (governance and public policy). All tracks require further foreign languages besides English. Units in the 2026/27 offer include:

- Comparative Political Economy and Comparative Government and Politics of West and East Europe
- International Marketing, International Business Strategy and Quantitative Methods for Economics
- Project Cycle Management and International Trade and Investment
- Courts and Human Rights, International Human Rights, and Globalization and Theories of Justice
- Electives such as African Government and Politics, East Asian Government and Politics, Global Environmental Law and Food Law and Policies
- Languages including French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Chinese and Russian, plus Academic Writing, an internship and a 12 ECTS final exam
How the programme is taught
Classes are small and interactive, and curricular internships can take place in Italy or abroad, with Erasmus+ traineeship grants for placements outside Italy. Double degrees let selected students spend time abroad: International Politics and Economic Relations students can join European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) for a year, and International Economic Relations students can spend one or two semesters at the State University of Campinas in Brazil.

The course prepares senior and middle managers for ministries, especially foreign affairs, governmental and non-governmental international organisations, companies operating internationally and non-profit bodies in international cooperation. Fees and scholarships
The full-time maximum at UniMC is €1,600 a year, but international students pay much less by country of origin: €156 for developing and non-OECD countries and €807 for OECD countries under the 2025/26 rules, with merit conditions from year two. Non-EU students can also apply to ERDIS Marche for an income and merit-based scholarship, so IR can be tuition-free for eligible students.

The IR pre-admission committee reviews files submitted on DreamApply: CV, degree certificate and transcript, English certificate, passport, motivation letter and two references. The 2027/28 intake has six rounds between 3 November 2026 and 30 April 2027, with a €20 pre-admission fee, and teaching begins on 13 September 2027.
Pre-admitted students receive a letter by email, complete Universitaly pre-enrolment in spring and request a type D study visa, then enrol in Macerata with a declaration of value or Diploma Supplement.
