The Master in Computational and Modelling Engineering at the University of Pavia is a two-year, 120 ECTS degree (class LM-44-R) whose Modelling and Simulation in Engineering (CEMS) curriculum is taught in English. It covers numerical methods, computational mechanics and materials. Non-EU students pay a flat rate by country or an income-based fee.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in engineering or the physical sciences, such as chemistry, physics or materials science.
- At least 36 ECTS in mathematics, physics and chemistry and 45 ECTS in engineering subjects set in the regulations.
- English at B2 level, shown by a certificate, a university English course of at least 3 ECTS or an English-taught bachelor.
- A check of your preparation: graduates at or above 90/110 on the Italian scale are exempt, others take a test, and foreign graduates are assessed case by case by a committee, possibly through an interview.
- An application on apply.unipv.eu with a motivation letter, three references and the €35 fee.
About the programme
Computational and Modelling Engineering for Materials, Structures and Sustainable Technologies is a two-year master's degree in class LM-44-R, run by the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Pavia, with open access. The degree is officially bilingual and has two curricula. Modelling and Simulation in Engineering, known as CEMS, is the English-taught curriculum: the application portal lists English as its study language and the entry requirements ask for B2 English to take part in courses taught in English. The other curriculum has Italian course titles.
CEMS prepares specialists in digital design and computational methods who can work with modern manufacturing technologies, innovative materials and advanced devices. It suits graduates in engineering, physics, chemistry or materials science who enjoy mathematics and simulation.
What you will study
The first year builds foundations in mathematics, mechanics, materials and simulation. In the second year you shape the plan around one of three directions: computational mechanics and numerical modelling, materials and engineering of sustainable technologies, or engineering of biological materials and structures. Units in the CEMS study plan include:
- Numerical Analysis (numerical methods and applied mathematics)
- Mechanics of Materials
- Chemistry and Physics of Materials
- Computational Mechanics
- Industrial Numerical Simulations
- Advanced Industrial Numerical Simulations
- Nonlinear Computational Mechanics
- Electives such as Additive Manufacturing, Mechanobiology and Thermal Management
How the programme is taught
The second year centres on design and laboratory activities. Free-choice credits can go to units such as Design Laboratory, Numerical Optimization or Polymer Chemistry, and a 3 ECTS language requirement can be met with Italian for Foreign Students or an English lab. The degree ends with a 21 ECTS master thesis, and the course site notes collaborations with European and non-European universities for theses carried out abroad. The regulations do not include internships or double degrees.
Career paths
The course site lists freelance engineering work, roles in public and private applied research centres, and management of applied research and technological innovation facilities. The sectors it names include:
- Mechanical engineering and manufacturing
- Aeronautics and aerospace
- Packaging and the chemical industry
- The biomedical sector
- The agri-food industry
- Energy
- Construction and cultural heritage
Fees and scholarships
Fees follow the science area. Non-EU students with a study visa may take the 2026/27 flat rate set by citizenship, €390 a year in bracket 1 (countries like India, Pakistan and Vietnam) and €1,520 or €4,550 in brackets 2 and 3, or an income-based fee from an equivalent ISEE. With an ISEE up to €32,000 the all-inclusive fee is zero, giving zero euro tuition for eligible students, though the regional tax and €16 stamp duty remain. Choosing the ISEE route also lets you apply to EDiSU Pavia for a scholarship.
How to apply from outside the EU
CEMS has its own entry on apply.unipv.eu. Along with your degree documents you need a motivation letter and three references, and you pay €35 per programme. A committee assesses foreign graduates case by case and may hold an interview. For 2026/27 the first call ran from 12 to 20 November 2025, and later calls were open to non-EU applicants abroad only while seats remained.
After admission, complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and apply for a type D study visa, which the consulate decides. The 2027/28 calendar was not published in September 2026.
How ApplyAZ helps
If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
Questions and answers
Is the whole degree taught in English?
No, the degree is bilingual. Its Modelling and Simulation in Engineering (CEMS) curriculum is the English route: the application portal lists English as its study language, and applicants need B2 English to follow courses taught in English.
What will I study in the CEMS curriculum?
Numerical analysis, mechanics of materials, chemistry and physics of materials, computational and nonlinear computational mechanics, and industrial numerical simulation, with electives such as additive manufacturing and mechanobiology and a 21 ECTS thesis.
What bachelor's background do I need?
A bachelor's in engineering or the physical sciences, such as chemistry, physics or materials science, with at least 36 ECTS in mathematics, physics and chemistry and 45 ECTS in engineering subjects.
Is there an entrance test?
Graduates with at least 90/110 on the Italian scale are exempt. Others take a test held in September or October and in January or February, and foreign graduates are assessed case by case, possibly through an interview.
How much are the fees?
Non-EU students with a study visa pay a flat rate by citizenship, from €390 a year for 2026/27, or an income-based fee. With an equivalent ISEE up to €32,000 the all-inclusive fee is zero, and EDiSU Pavia offers regional scholarships.
