The University of Foggia is a public university in Apulia, autonomous since a ministerial decree of 5 August 1999, when it separated from the University of Bari. Teaching began in Foggia in 1990, and the university now has seven departments covering agriculture, economics, law, humanities, medicine and clinical sciences. It is growing fast: enrolment rose 31.2% between 2018/19 and 2024/25, to 13,857 students (ANVUR), and Censis 2026/27 ranked its Dentistry first in Italy.
The University of Foggia teaches most of its degree programmes in Italian, and its degree lists do not mark which courses, if any, are taught in English. Its admission rules ask for Italian at B2 level for Italian-taught courses, or English at B2 level for courses taught in English, so check the language of your programme in its course page before applying. If you can study in Italian, the choice is wide, from agriculture and food science to economics, law, medicine and dentistry.
The University of Foggia asks non-EU applicants for at least 12 years of schooling, with the original diploma, an official Italian translation, legalisation or Apostille, and a Declaration of Value or CIMEA comparability certificate. You also need B2 in the language of teaching, or you take the university's own test, an online oral interview; in 2026 sessions ran on 18 and 28 May. Some courses have limited places. Foggia publishes no acceptance rate.
Applying to the University of Foggia from abroad means a pre-evaluation of your documents, Universitaly pre-enrolment and a study visa. For 2026/27 the study visa must be requested from the Italian consulate by 30 November 2026. The university stresses that its prior acceptance gives no right to a visa, which only the consulate decides. Write to ammissioni.internazionali@unifg.it early if your diploma or language certificate is unusual, because documents take time.
The University of Foggia charges non-EU visa students €960 for 2026/27: a €160 enrolment fee, covering the ADISU regional tax and stamp duty, due by 30 November, plus an €800 all-inclusive fee in three instalments due by 31 January, 31 March and 31 May. Foreign students with income and assets abroad who submit an ISEE parificato pay the enrolment fee and may get a full or partial exemption from the €800 fee, depending on their ISEE band.
Yes, the University of Foggia can cost little more than the €160 enrolment fee, but only with the right paperwork. Tuition is set by family income (ISEE); students from lower-income families can pay little or nothing beyond the regional tax, and a DSU scholarship winner also gets a tuition waiver. The right-to-study (DSU) scholarship for University of Foggia students comes from ADISU Puglia, the regional agency for Apulia, which also runs student housing and canteens. For 2026/27, bachelor's and master's students applied online between 14 July and 13 August 2026 through the ADISU student portal, and provisional rankings were approved in early September. The University of Foggia is in the 801 to 1000 band of the THE World University Rankings 2026, and 11th among Italy's medium-sized public universities in Censis 2026/27, with 83.3 points, up three places. Censis also ranked its Dentistry degree first in Italy. It does not appear in QS 2027 or ARWU 2026. Global tables mostly measure research across a whole university, so for Foggia the programme-level Censis results are often the more useful signal.
Student life at the University of Foggia is city-based, with departments spread across Foggia rather than one campus. Living costs are modest on the figures the university publishes: lunch and dinner at a fixed €3 in four canteens, city buses at €1 a ride and electric bike sharing at €0.10 a minute. There is no accommodation set aside for international students, so look through ADISU Puglia, the city's housing listings and ESN Foggia, and never pay a deposit unseen.
The University of Foggia is northern Apulia's public university, smaller than the University of Bari, which had 40,658 students in 2024/25. In Censis 2026/27 Foggia came 11th among medium-sized public universities, behind the University of Salento in Lecce, which came 7th, while Bari ranked 9th among mega universities. Foggia's strongest cards are Dentistry, first in Italy in Censis, and a simple €960 package for non-EU students. Private universities charge fixed fees.
The University of Foggia is a good choice if you can study in Italian, want a growing public university with a clear, low non-EU fee of €960 a year, and are interested in dentistry, medicine, agriculture and food science, economics or law. It suits you less if you need a full degree in English, since its lists do not flag English-taught programmes, or if you want a large international campus. Expect city living rather than campus life, and plan housing yourself.
