Detailed entry requirements

Palermo's Spatial Planning master has open access and asks for a degree in spatial planning, architecture, building sciences or industrial design, or adequate knowledge in related areas, plus English at B2 and a positive evaluation by the admission committee after an interview. Degree requirement

The course has open access, so places are not capped. The degree rule is met automatically by an Italian degree in class L-21 (spatial planning), L-17 (architecture), L-23 (building sciences) or L-4 (industrial design), a single-cycle LM-4 architecture degree, or an equivalent. [2]

With a degree in another field, you need adequate knowledge in the areas below, checked from your CV or at an interview. The 2025/26 course regulation lists the subject sectors it looks for but sets no minimum number of credits: [2]

• History and representation: drawing and history of architecture, with topography also counted.
• Urban planning and social sciences: urban planning and geography, with planning technique, valuation, statistics, economic geography and sociology also counted.
• Environment, architecture and landscape: architectural and urban design and landscape architecture, with industrial design, interior design, arboriculture and applied botany also counted.
• Building: architecture technology, with building engineering also counted.

A foreign degree must come from an accredited or recognised university. A commission named by the course coordinator checks that it fits the programme and, after an interview, gives a positive evaluation that is valid only for the academic year you applied for. [2] As a general guideline, the 2026 manual says the course admits graduates in spatial planning, architecture or engineering, or graduates whose studies included at least basic drawing skills and some background in architecture, engineering, sociology or geography. What this means for your transcript

The committee looks at your individual background, not just the title of your degree. [1] As a guide, based on the rule above:

• Usually a fit: a B.Arch or a B.Planning, which normally covers drawing, history of architecture, design and urban planning.
• Check carefully: a B.Tech or B.E. in Civil Engineering is often strong on building and surveying but lighter on planning, history and landscape. A BA or B.Sc. in Geography or Sociology matches the social science area but needs at least basic drawing skills.
• Often short: a B.Com, BBA, BCA or a pure science B.Sc., with no drawing, design or planning content.

English

English at CEFR level B2. A certificate must have been issued no more than two years before you apply and, under the course regulation, must test listening, reading, speaking and writing. [1][2] The 2026 manual lists these accepted certificates: [1]

• IELTS Academic: minimum 5.5
• TOEFL iBT: minimum 72
• Pearson PTE General and Academic: minimum 46
• Trinity College London ISE II to IV
• British Institutes certification
• Cambridge English Qualifications

Applicants from the United States, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and other countries on the university's list are exempt, and for Universitaly pre-enrolment a Medium of Instruction certificate from your university can stand in for the language certificate. [1] Without a certificate, the manual says you can make up the level by taking courses at UniPa, and the course regulation says UniPa's language centre then checks your English. The regulation also mentions an Italian language check for foreign applicants by UniPa's ItaStra school, without a minimum level. [1][2]

Evaluation and interview

There is no standard entrance exam. After you apply, UniPa's office checks that your documents are complete and valid, then the admission committee reviews your file and either rejects it or admits you to selection. Files that do not meet the requirements are rejected automatically. The committee tells you by email whether you must take an entry test, attend an interview, or both, and the evaluation can take at least 30 working days. [1]

Shortlisted applicants have an online interview with the coordinator about their study goals, motivation and interest in spatial planning. UniPa's non-EU procedure says this interview also covers academic preparation and English. If you are found eligible, you download the final admission letter from the UniPa portal and complete your application. [1][3]

For Italian graduates of the listed classes, a grade of at least 100/110 counts as proof of preparation; otherwise a commission interview decides. [2]

2026/27 deadlines

Applications for 2026/27 opened on 15 January 2026. [1] Non-EU applicants living abroad had to create their UniPa portal application by 20 July 2026 and their Universitaly pre-enrolment by 4 August 2026, and complete visa procedures by 30 November 2026. The 2027/28 dates are not yet published. [3]

Documents and non-EU steps

For the UniPa portal application you upload: [1]

• A valid passport and a passport photo.
• Your bachelor's degree certificate and a transcript of records translated into English.
• Your B2 English certificate, unless you are exempt.
• A CV with a recent photo, covering your education, skills and relevant experience.
• A motivation letter.

With the final admission letter you complete Universitaly pre-enrolment, which needs a copy of your bachelor's degree (provisional certificates are not accepted), a legalised translated transcript and the B2 certificate or a Medium of Instruction certificate. [1]

On arrival in Palermo you hand in your original documents to finalise enrolment: the degree and transcript with legalised Italian or English translations, and a Declaration of Value, or instead a CIMEA Statement of Comparability, or a Diploma Supplement with a CIMEA Statement of Verification, plus proof of your residence permit application. What bachelor's degree do I need for Spatial Planning at Palermo?

A degree in spatial planning, architecture, building sciences or industrial design meets the rule automatically. Universitaly pre-enrolment needs a copy of your bachelor's degree, and the 2026 manual says provisional certificates are not accepted. So you need your final degree certificate by the time you reach that step. [1]

I have a B.Tech in Civil Engineering or a BA in Geography. Can I apply?

Possibly. The manual names engineering, sociology and geography as possible backgrounds if your studies included at least basic drawing skills. The committee assesses your individual background, and we check your transcript against the planning, design and history areas first. [1][2]

How are the fees set?

For 2026/27, non-EU students living abroad choose a fixed yearly fee set by country list or an income-based fee worked out from an ISEE parificato. ERSU Palermo scholarships include a tuition fee waiver, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students. [4][1]

What does the degree prepare me for?

Graduates build strategies, policies and projects for urban and territorial change, working in public bodies, local development agencies, NGOs and private firms. They can also sit the Italian state exam for the territorial planning sector of the architects and planners register. [2]
