Entry requirements
Detailed entry requirements
Brescia's Mechanical Engineering master asks for a three-year degree or recognised foreign equivalent with at least 108 CFU in maths, science and mechanical engineering subjects, a final mark of at least 80/110 or equivalent, English at B2 and, because teaching is in Italian, Italian at B2 for non-EU applicants. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]
The 108-credit rule
You need a three-year bachelor's degree or a recognised foreign qualification, with at least 108 CFU across these groups: [1]
- At least 25 CFU in maths, computing and statistics (sectors such as MAT/02, MAT/03, MAT/05 to MAT/09, INF/01, ING-INF/05 and SECS-S/02), with at least 15 in algebra, geometry and mathematical analysis (MAT/02, MAT/03 and MAT/05).
- At least 15 CFU in physics and chemistry (CHIM/03, CHIM/07, FIS/01 and FIS/03).
- At least 60 CFU in industrial and mechanical engineering: fluid machines, energy systems, thermal engineering, measurements, applied mechanics, machine design, manufacturing, industrial plants, metallurgy, materials and engineering management (ING-IND/08 to 17, ING-IND/21, 22 and 35, and ICAR/08).
You must also meet at least five of these seven conditions, each worth 6 CFU: [1]
- Fluid machines, energy systems or thermal engineering (ING-IND/08 to 11).
- Mechanical and thermal measurements (ING-IND/12).
- Applied mechanics (ING-IND/13).
- Machine design or structural mechanics (ING-IND/14 and ICAR/08).
- Design methods and engineering drawing (ING-IND/15).
- Manufacturing technology and systems (ING-IND/16).
- Metallurgy or materials (ING-IND/21 and 22).
If you fall short, the degree council states the missing credits or exams, which you must pass before applying again. It can also set an individual study plan when you are admitted. [1]
What this means for your transcript
Italian CFU and the credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit: one CFU stands for 25 hours of student work, and the council looks at your subjects, not just your total. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical, Production or Automobile Engineering, whose core subjects tend to match the 60-credit block and most of the seven conditions.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech or B.E. in Aerospace, Industrial, Mechatronics or Metallurgical Engineering usually covers the maths and physics blocks but may meet fewer than five of the seven conditions.
- Often short: a B.Tech in Civil, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a B.Sc., BCA, B.Com, BBA or BA, usually lacks the 60 credits in mechanical and industrial engineering.
Your final mark matters too: the rule asks for at least 80/110 or an equivalent mark. [1]
Italian and English
The university lists this master's as taught in Italian. For 2026/27, non-EU applicants needed an Italian certificate at CEFR B2 or higher from the CLIQ quality system, or a pass in the university's online Italian test. [2]
English at CEFR B2 is also required. The 2026/27 notice accepts a B2 certificate from an international exam on the university's accepted list, an English-taught bachelor's, or English exams passed in your degree. It does not list specific test scores. Under the degree regulations, students admitted with English at B1 take a 3 CFU English unit. [1][2]
Pre-assessment and final mark
There is no selective entrance test. A committee pre-assesses your degree and checks that the subjects you studied match the master's, using a signed form that lists your passed exams by subject area. [2]
You need a bachelor's final mark of at least 80/110 or equivalent. If your mark is lower, you must pass a test set by a committee of the degree council. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants living abroad had one pre-assessment round, open until 15 March 2026 at noon (Italian time), with outcomes by mid-May 2026. The degree had to be awarded by 10 July 2026. A second round, from 16 July to 16 August 2026, was open only to EU and EU-equivalent applicants. [2][3]
Applicants still finishing their degree could apply if they graduated by 10 July 2026. Those graduating after 15 March 2026 needed their university to send the degree certificate and exam list by 30 July 2026. [2]
Documents and non-EU steps
The pre-assessment request is made online with: [2]
- Your passport.
- Your degree certificate and transcript in one file, or an enrolment certificate with your exams if you have not graduated, with an Italian or English translation if issued in another language.
- The signed form listing your passed exams by subject area.
- Your Italian and English certificates, if you hold them.
- A €20 application fee, unless you are eligible to request the STAR scholarship.
Non-EU applicants living abroad who pass the pre-assessment then submit the study visa application through Universitaly. [3]

About the programme
Mechanical Engineering (Ingegneria Meccanica) is a two-year, 120 CFU master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-33) at the University of Brescia. It is run by the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, with teaching in Brescia. [1][5]
The university lists this master's as taught in Italian. Some units are taught in English, including most of the biomedical units in the Biomeccanica curriculum, and many courses use English textbooks. [1][2][5]
The degree builds advanced skills in the design of components, machines and systems, energy and fluid machines, measurements, manufacturing and industrial plants, with laboratory work, project work and company visits. [1]
What you will study
You choose one of five curricula when you enrol: [1]
- Autoveicoli (vehicles): chassis and powertrain design, vehicle dynamics, road and track testing, and hybrid, electric and fuel-cell propulsion.
- Biomeccanica (biomechanics): biomedical devices and systems, biomaterials, prosthesis manufacturing and biomedical sensors, with most specialist units in English.
- Costruzioni (machine design): advanced structural design, fracture mechanics, finite element and numerical methods, and experimental testing of materials.
- Produzione (production): manufacturing processes, production planning and control, FEM simulation of plastic deformation, quality, CAD and CAM.
- Transizione Energetica (energy transition): energy conversion, decarbonisation, renewables, energy efficiency and computational fluid dynamics.
Every curriculum starts with Costruzione di macchine I (machine design, 9 CFU). Most also include fluid machines, thermo-fluid dynamics and engineering economics in the first year. [1]
How the programme is taught
Teaching runs over four semesters. Each curriculum has 9 or 12 free-choice credits, and company internships or internal projects can count for up to 9 CFU of them. Students admitted without a B2 English certificate take a 3 CFU English unit in place of some free-choice credits. [1]
The degree ends with a 12 CFU thesis, which can be written in another EU language. Graduates can sit the state exam for the industrial section of the engineers' register, or go on to a PhD or a second-level university master. [1]
Fees and scholarships
The University of Brescia sets fees by family income (ISEE). For 2026/27 the no-tax area covers an ISEE of up to €28,000, while the regional tax for the right to study is €130, €160 or €190 depending on ISEE, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students. [4]
In the 2026/27 round, non-EU applicants living abroad could also request the university's STAR international scholarship, which covers Italian-taught and English-taught master's degrees. The LMINT scholarship is for English-taught degrees only and is not open for this programme. [2]
How to apply from outside the EU
Non-EU applicants living abroad first request a pre-assessment of their foreign degree through the university's online procedure. For 2026/27 this round closed on 15 March 2026 at noon (Italian time), with a €20 fee and outcomes by mid-May 2026. The next call sets the 2027/28 dates. [2]
Applicants who pass the pre-assessment then submit the study visa application through Universitaly and complete enrolment under the rules for non-EU students living abroad. [2][3]

Questions and answers
What bachelor's degree do I need for Mechanical Engineering at Brescia?
A three-year degree or recognised foreign equivalent with at least 108 CFU: 25 in maths and computing (15 of them maths), 15 in physics and chemistry and 60 in mechanical and industrial engineering, plus at least five of seven 6-credit subject conditions. [1]
Is the Brescia Mechanical Engineering master taught in English?
No. The university lists it as taught in Italian. Some units are in English, mostly in the Biomeccanica curriculum, but for 2026/27 non-EU applicants needed Italian at B2 or a pass in the university's online Italian test. [1][2]
Is there an entrance exam?
No selective test. A committee pre-assesses your degree and subjects. You need a final mark of at least 80/110 or equivalent, and applicants below that must pass a test set by the degree council. [1][2]
What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?
English at B2. For 2026/27 the university accepted a B2 certificate from an international exam on its approved list, an English-taught bachelor's or English exams in your degree, so we check which proof your file can use. Students admitted at B1 take a 3 CFU English unit. [1][2]
When is the deadline for non-EU students?
For 2026/27, non-EU applicants living abroad had until 15 March 2026 at noon (Italian time) to request pre-assessment, with outcomes by mid-May 2026. The 2027/28 call sets the new dates. [2]
Can I apply before I graduate?
Yes, if you finish in time. For 2026/27 the degree had to be awarded by 10 July 2026, and applicants graduating after 15 March 2026 needed their university to send proof of the degree by 30 July 2026. [2]
I have a B.Tech in Civil or Electrical Engineering. Can I apply?
Possibly, but check carefully. These degrees usually cover the maths and physics blocks but often fall short of the 60 credits in mechanical and industrial subjects and the five 6-credit conditions. The council states any missing credits to complete before you reapply. [1]
Which curricula can I choose?
Five: Autoveicoli (vehicles), Biomeccanica (biomechanics), Costruzioni (machine design), Produzione (production) and Transizione Energetica (energy transition). You choose one when you enrol, and every curriculum ends with a 12 CFU thesis. [1]
